SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 634 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the highest number of new cases reported over one day thus far.The new cases were out of 9,224 tests reported to the county on Friday — a 7% positive result — and bring the region's COVID-19 case total to 22,489 cases.County health leaders also reported seven more deaths due to the virus on Friday. The victims died between July 7 and July 15 and include three women and four men, whose ages ranged from early 50s to mid-90s. All had existing chronic conditions. The county's death toll is now at 472 deaths.Two new community setting outbreaks were also reported, both traced to restaurants, the county says. The county does not name the businesses that community outbreaks are traced to, officials have previously said. San Diego's case rate trigger is greater than 100 cases per 100,000 people over 14 days, while the trigger for investigations is 70% or less within 24 hours of notification over seven days.The county is also still well above the state's case rate threshold of no more than 100 cases per 100,000 people, or more than 25 cases per 100,000 people and higher than 8% positivity.The new numbers come as California announces that counties that are on the state's watch list for 14 consecutive days will not be allowed to reopen for in-person school in the fall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police and National City firefighters used “scare tactics” this Halloween with elaborate haunted stations, touted as safer alternatives to traditional trick-or-treating on dark streets.The Southeastern Division police station building on Skyline Drive was transformed into a walk-though “haunted station," with room after room of zombies, creepy clowns and ghouls, some played by department employees in costume.“It’s all in good fun, for the kids to save a safe place to go, to get a little scared but in a safe environment,” San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said before she took a tour of the haunts.Joseph Lemon, Jr. does not let his 11-year-old daughter Ananda do traditional trick-or-treating.“It’s not as safe as it used to be, and you have to go and x-ray the candy and all of that," Lemon, Jr. said. "Now many of the churches and the police department put on events like this that are safer.”  They also had candy and entertainment in the parking lot. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue responded after a man reportedly got his hand stuck in an industrial tortilla press Thursday night.According to the department, the incident happened just after 5:30 at Tortillera La Perla on the 3100 block of National Avenue in San Diego.The man has been carried out of the factory, but a piece of the equipment is reportedly still stuck to the man's hand. His condition is unclear at this time. Also unclear is how the man got his hand stuck in the press. 507

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents in one City Heights neighborhood say they're upset their streets have become a constant "demolition derby."In the Ring video, a loud crashing sound is heard at night, before a frantic Yesenia Zepeda goes outside her home in late April. A hit-and run driver struck her girlfriend's car parked on Dwight Street near 47th Street. It is the second time her girlfriend's car has been struck outside the home in a 4-month period. "It's ridiculous and it's dangerous," said Zepeda. Last week, that danger played out again on her Ring camera, as a car collided with an SUV carrying a mother and a one-month-old baby, who appeared to be okay. "It was heartbreaking to see," said Zepeda. Zepeda fears more heartbreak may be just around the corner. "I hear screeching all the time," said Zepeda. She and other neighbors say crashes and close calls are a constant. "You really can't see anything at night," said Zepeda. Zepenia points to the dark street, speeding cars, a sharp turn, and one very narrow street. Other videos show just how tight that squeeze is. Sometimes, two-way traffic is not possible. Zepeda has contacted city officials, asking for streetlights, signage to help slow speeds, and turning a section of 47th Street into a one-way street. A city spokesperson issued the following statement: “In April 2017, a 24 hour traffic study was conducted and the data concluded that this location does not qualify for traffic calming measures. Although the data did not warrant traffic calming measures, in May 2017, the City installed 2 speed limit signs on Dwight and 47th Streets and painted a yellow centerline at the intersection of 47th and Dwight. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Raw emotion filled a San Diego courtroom Tuesday as the friends and family members of those killed and injured in a crash faced the drunk driver responsible at her sentencing. Thirteen people flew in from San Francisco to speak during victim impact statements. The most powerful words came from Giao Pham's life partner, John Lawhead. Pham was killed in the March 23rd crash."We were together for eleven years, until your actions that night took my partner, my world, my everything. You still don't have any remorse in your heart, you're a very shallow, person aren't you!?" At one point, the defendant, Alondra Marquez, interrupted, saying "You don't know me," Lawhead shouted back, " I don't care to know you, the only reason I know you is because you murdered my partner!" Marquez, 22, rear-ended a Lyft car on Highway 163 in Balboa Park, killing Pham and leaving his friend, Andy Lynn with a traumatic brain injury. Prosecutors said Marquez had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit and was driving more than 100 miles an hour. In a bizarre coincidence, Marquez and the two victims were at the same Hillcrest bar the night of the crash. While Pham and Lynn chose to hire a Lyft, Marquez chose to drive, even though several people offered to give her a ride. "You had five chances not to drive your car, you chose to drive, at your fastest speed of 109 miles an hour, but that wasn't fast enough or good enough for you," shouted Lawhead Pham and Lynn were visiting from San Francisco for a wedding. The impact sent the car flying into a ravine. The Lyft driver suffered minor injuries. "Physically, it's my fault, but spiritually and emotionally, I don't know where I was, but I wasn't there," she said from behind the glass. Lawhead told her she is the first person he truly hates. " I never thought I could truly hate someone. I hate your heart. I hate your soul. I hate your being, your spirit, I hate all of you." Marquez said she isn't a bad person. " Just know that I am not a bad or evil girl, my brain is processing this. It's a hard pill to swallow." Marquez asked for forgiveness. "I'm real sorry. I can't do nothing about it, but I'm locked up if that makes you guys feel better."She pleaded guilty and faces a maximum sentence of 13 years, four months in prison when the judge announces her sentence next week. 2794
