SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Tuesday unanimously signed off on a program that will provide quick access to help for first responders dealing with a mental health crisis. The Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responder Behavioral Health Program will offer confidential mental and behavioral health support by connecting first responders with a clinical professional via a dedicated phone line, website or smartphone app. The program will be open to first responders in any jurisdiction or branch of public safety. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher proposed the program after speaking with firefighters and law enforcement officials around the county during a listening tour earlier this year. The program is named after Cal Fire Capt. Ryan Mitchell, who took his own life in 2017. Mitchell's father thanked the board for approving the program. William Mitchell, who is a fire department chaplain, said sharing his son's legacy ``brings healing to our broken hearts.'' Fletcher said the board ``took an important step in furthering its commitment to behavioral health services'' with their support of the program. ``First responders across San Diego County in the midst of a mental health crisis will be able to quickly access clinician assistance confidentially without the barriers that today are preventing them from getting the help they need,'' he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Old Globe Theatre will present its 15th annual Globe Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony virtually on its website and social media channels at 6 p.m. tonight to kick off the holiday season.The ceremony will feature songs, videos, and special hellos from some of the theater's favorite company members from the past 22 years, James Vasquez, director of the theater's production of ``"Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials confirmed 330 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, increasing the region's total to 46,331, but no new deaths, with that total remaining at 775.Five new community outbreaks were confirmed as of Friday, three in business settings, one in a restaurant/bar and one in a government setting. From Sept. 19 to Sept. 25, 18 community outbreaks were confirmed. The number of community outbreaks remains above the trigger of seven or more in seven days.The county reported 9,914 tests as of Friday and the percentage of new laboratory-confirmed cases was 3%.The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 3.3%. The target is less than 8%. The seven-day daily average of tests is 8,561.Sixteen new cases of COVID-19 were reported Saturday by San Diego State University, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,064 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester.The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Friday.Of the students living on campus, 380 have tested positive and students living off campus totaled 663 positive cases, health services said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police arrested two people and seized various merchandise from an illegal marijuana dispensary, an officer said today.Narcotics investigators served a search warrant at the dispensary, called Miramar Private Club, around 10 a.m. Thursday, San Diego Police Lt. Matt Novak said in a statement. The dispensary was operating in a building near the intersection of Spectrum Lane and Camino Santa Fe.Police arrested and issued citations to two employees for possession of marijuana for sale and operating a business without a permit.Officers seized six pounds of "high-grade" marijuana, more than 800 pounds of marijuana concentrates and edibles and ,300 in cash, Novak said.They also found information that led to the search of an apartment in Mission Valley, off Reflection Drive north of Friars Road, believed to be associated with the dispensary.There, officers seized an additional three pounds of marijuana, more concentrates and edibles and ,500 in cash.Narcotics detectives will continue to investigate illegally operating dispensaries in San Diego, Novak said."All owners and employees found operating these illegal businesses will be arrested and prosecuted," Novak said in the statement. 1222

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas.
