CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) It is no secret that restaurants throughout San Diego County have been struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic, but one restaurant in Otay Ranch was forced to close before it ever had its grand opening, just as the pandemic was starting. Hurricane Grill and Wings was supposed to open sometime between late January and early February, but when the pandemic started, it delayed everything. The owner Abu Syed is now getting ready to open the restaurant on Monday, September 28th.The restaurant will open at just 25% capacity indoors and patio seating outdoors. Like so many other restaurant owners, Syed says the landlord did give them a break on rent, but will owe it at the end of their lease. The restaurant is staffed with 32 employees, 16 of them are full-time.In August, the California Restaurant Association projected that close to 30% of restaurants in the state could close for good because of the pandemic. Syed is hopeful that he doesn't become a part of that statistic. Hurricane Grill in Wings is located at 2040 Birch Road, Suit M101 in Chula Vista. 1098

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Chula Vista residents will head to the polls in June to decide whether or not to pass a new sales tax.Measure A would increase sales tax in the city by half a cent, tying it for the highest sales tax in San Diego County. If passed, the city estimates the sales tax will generate approximately million per year. City leaders say the tax will be used for public safety and those in favor of the tax increase say it’s much needed.RELATED: How much you need to earn to buy a home in San Diego CountyProponents argue that the city needs more police officers, saying that, despite population growth, the city has fewer officers than in 2007, slowing response times."They want to know why it’s taking us so long to get to their calls, why they don’t see as many officers out on the streets and it’s because of our staffing issues," says David Oyos, the president of the Chula Vista Police Officers' Association. Supporters of the tax also say the city needs more firefighters to be more efficient."It’s very embarrassing to admit to the public that we cannot get to them when we’re supposed to," adds Oyos. Those against the measure point out the fact that, though leaders say the money will go to public safety, the text of the measure says the proceeds “shall be for unrestricted general revenue purposes.” In other words, the money can be used for any lawful purpose."I don’t want to have to babysit the council perpetually for the rest of time," says Russ Hall, the president of Just Say No on A.RELATED: Important dates to keep in mind this election year in San Diego County  Opponents also say, if passed, Chula Vista will be tied for the highest sales tax in the county and that the tax has no end date."The city just committed over 300 million dollars to the convention center, now, on the other hand, the city is saying we don’t have enough money for police and fire?" says Hall. The measure goes to the voters during the June 5 primary. 2026

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — It’s a United States census year and so far, census numbers are not where they should be for San Diego, so Chula Vista leaders held a “week of action” to try to increase numbers.San Diego County has reported a 67.7% response rate compared to 68% in 2010. The goal is to surpass the 2010 numbers and hit 70% this year.Angelica Davis with the City of Chula Vista said they had planned many outreach events to connect with the community, but coronavirus has made that difficult, so they’ve had to find new ways to encourage people to fill out the census in a safe way.The final day of the week, residents could attend a drive-through event where the first 50 cars got whole pizzas and everyone was entered to win prizes and bikes. Anyone who came had access to translators, technology, and people who could answer questions.Davis said these resources are crucial in the Chula Vista community, especially with a push this year for 80% of participants to do the census online.“Not everybody has access to wireless or devices to be able to do it online,” she said. She also said many people in the Chula Vista community are worried about how their information will be used. Of the nine questions on the census, none of them ask about citizenship status and all responses remain private.“The information that gets obtained by the census cannot be taken by other reporting agencies, it’s all confidential,” said Davis.Davis said another problem is that people don’t realize what the census does, so they don’t bother to do it.”We’ve actually had people ask well what is the census, and I don’t think they make that connection that with that data, they determine where the funding is needed, where it needs to go,”The more people who live in a community, the more funding they’ll get, and that funding goes toward resources like rental assistance and food programs, which she said have all been needed the past few months with coronavirus. The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to start door knocks to encourage census participation in August. You can complete the census online, by phone or by mail. 2124
