Two teens in Florida tried to steal a car at a sports complex as a team of Clearwater police officers played softball, according to the Clearwater Police Department."They had no idea that basically the entire team out there was comprised of Clearwater police officers," said Sgt. Thomas Dawe.The incident happened on Monday evening at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater.The group of police officers was playing their second softball game of the evening. They were the only group playing softball and noticed the two teens walking around."Normally, there are not many fans due to COVID...They kind of seemed out of place. They weren't watching the game. They were just kind of lingering around so most of us took note of their behavior to start," said Sgt. Dawe.Clearwater Police said a 16-year-old girl stole a set of keys belonging to an umpire. The keys were placed on a table. The two teens took off running out of the sports complex.When the scorekeeper realized what happened, she yelled at the umpire who was out in the field.Sgt. Thomas Dawe, Cpl. Jarred Stiff and Officer Matthew Richmond chased after the two teens."It's just unfortunate that kids were trying to do what they did in order to get down to south St. Pete. There are other opportunities, other avenues to get places rather than taking those steps to commit a crime," said Cpl. Jarred Stiff.The police officers called for backup since they did not have handcuffs on them.The two suspects were charged with attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle. Both have been in trouble with the law before."Unfortunately, we were not able to win the game, but at least we were able to catch a couple of kids doing a bad thing," said Cpl. Tucson Police's Operation Division South Motor Squad took a different and non-traditional approach to help raise awareness for safe driving on Thursday.According to the department, mannequins were placed at different intersections around Tucson in an effort to lower collision statistics and urge drivers to pay better attention to their driving and what is around them. The mannequins were dressed like officers and placed in and around police vehicles near intersections that are or have been known for vehicle crashes.This is the first time TPD has utilized this method by using mannequins.Tucson Police said drivers can expect to see the mannequins out again Aug. 21 but the location has yet to be determined.  732

UPLAND, Calif. (AP) — The pilot of a small plane that crashed into a Southern California house and burned Thursday has died, authorities said.A father and child inside the home escaped without injuries after the late morning crash.The single-engine Cirrus SR22 went down in Upland, east of Los Angeles. Authorities believe the pilot, who was not immediately identified, was the only person aboard.Upland police Capt. Marcelo Blanco said the cause of the crash was not immediately known.TV news helicopters showed a large portion of the house gutted and smoldering. A parachute was draped over trees.Cirrus aircraft are equipped with parachutes that pilots can deploy in an emergency.The home is near Cable Airport, about 35 miles (55 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. 774

United States Army recruiters around the country will participate in the Army's first nationwide, virtual hiring campaign with the goal of attracting 10,000 new soldiers over three days next week.The campaign will last from June 30-July 2, according to a news release from the U.S. Army.“This is a concerted effort across those three days that really gets everybody in the Army on board," LTC Brittany Simmons, Commander, Indianapolis Army Recruiting Battalion told theindychannel.com. "So you’re going to see the commanding generals at Fort Bragg, Fort Hood, Fort Drum, all of them are going to be involved," Simmons continued. "And so it’s that total Army effort. And while there’s an element that’s ambitious with us, that’s what the Army likes. We like a good challenge and we’re going to go forward, and it’s going to really help us set up the pool of applicants that will help us get to where we need to by the end of our fiscal year.”Throughout Army National Hiring Days, the U.S. Army will look to hire full-time and part-time soldiers in 150 different career fields ranging from combat roles to support positions in accounting and finance, logistics, engineering and technology.The Army will offer cash bonuses or four-year scholarships for people who enlist during the three-day event.This story was originally reported on theindychannel.com. 1360

Two dogs are safe after running onto a Phoenix freeway and disrupting traffic on Wednesday. Video from Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix showed two dogs running onto Interstate 17 near Deer Valley Road. The Arizona Department of Public Safety tried to catch the dogs, but they refused to stop. DPS stopped traffic for a brief time while troopers and Phoenix firefighters attempted to stop the dogs. Officials were able to grab one dog on I-17, but the other dog ran from DPS and away from the freeway into an RV park.Residents at the RV park were able to capture the second dog after almost an hour of running free. KNXV caught up with the dog and the owner: DOG CHASE: DPS following dogs on I-17/Deer Valley in Phoenix.
