Many dads were happy to take their loved ones out for a hearty meal, now that COVID-19 restrictions have become a little looser.All around town, there were lines out the door for Father's Day brunch. This was a welcome sight for San Diego restaurant owners."We missed mother's day, and we missed spring break," Johnny Rivera, co-owner of Hash House A Go Go in Hillcrest said. "These are the acorns in our business that we like to gather. And now that it's Father's Day, we feel like kind of back to normal today."During last month's Mother's Day, restaurants were only allowed to offer curbside pick up and delivery due to County Health Department rules. But now that dining restrictions have eased up, the 'Papa Bears' were ready for their big outing."They seem like they're coming out of hibernation a little bit," Rivera laughed.Some were still a bit hesitant to dine out."We were a little skeptical about it, but we still enjoy going out here and there," father, Alan Valdez said. He and his family were dining at Breakfast Republic in Downtown San Diego.Others were publicly ready to celebrate fatherhood with their loved ones."We were all waiting by our cars," a diner at Hash House A Go Go said. "We got a phone call, and everybody kept their distance while we were waiting." Three generations of his family were dining out, after getting a last-minute table at the restaurant. Of course, menu items were all dad-sized and dad-approved."Pork ribs and eggs, chicken wings and eggs, fried chicken, waffle, all things dad needs," Rivera shared."You can take a shower in this bowl, man!" the diner at Hash House said.The best part of the day?"Just hang out, take a day off work," Valdez said."I got my family. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Five San Diego Police officers were recognized for their exceptional bravery during the Las Vegas Massacre. Fifty-eight people died, and more than 400 others were injured in the 2017 shooting."When others run from danger, police officers run towards it," San Diego Police David Nisleit said, as he opened the awards ceremony at Miramar Air Station. On October 1, 2017, a group of San Diego Police officers was vacationing with their families in Las Vegas. They were enjoying their first year at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. But around 10 pm, the event turned deadly. "It probably wasn't fireworks or firecrackers. It wasn't just a shooting on the strip," Officer Thomas McGrath Jr. said. "We knew it was gunfire," Detective Michael Do said. "We just didn't know where it was coming from."The 1,100 bullets were fired from 32 stories up the Mandalay Bay Resort. That is when the eleven off-duty San Diego Police officers went from Vacation-mode to Action-mode. Officers Thomas McGrath, Mark Williams, Max Verduzco, Richard Barton, and Detective Michael Vo began shielding concert-goers, treating the wounded, and creating escape routes. For their heroic actions, the five men received the Department's highest decoration of bravery-- the "Medal For Valor.""I don't think I did anything special," Officer McGrath said. "I just did the same thing that I would normally do during patrol or what I have been trained to do."After helping the first group of people, Officer McGrath went back into the crowd and found Jonathan Smith, who had been shot in the neck. "I put as much fabric and shirt inside his neck to stop the bleeding," McGrath said. " I put pressure on it and did my best to get them out of that venue."He said the Department's tactical combat care training kicked it. It was an act that eventually saved Smith's life. "The bullet missed my carotid artery by a few centimeters, and it is still lodged in there," Smith said. He showed 10News his dark scar near his collar bone and said the bullet is still in a small pocket behind his heart. Without McGrath's quick actions, doctors told Smith, he would have died. Thursday, Smith drove from his home in Buena Park to not only attend the ceremony but to also give the "Lifesaving Medal" to his hero.Six other officers who were in attendance of the Route 91 festival also received recognition at Thursday's ceremony. Officers Caitlin Milligan, Eric Hansen, Bryan Johnson, William Hernandez Jr., Braden Wilson, and Detective Scott Gosnell were awarded the "Exceptional Performance Citation" for helping concert-goers escape from the venue.All of these heroic acts were made by San Diego Police Officers who were not in uniform at the time. They say the tragedy continues to inspire them to be proud members of the Department."I love my job. And I love the training that I get and being that person that can step up in times of need is always what I wanted to do," Officer Max Verduzco said. "Two years later, I still want to help people. And I think that event made me want to help more people. It made me proud to be a police officer," Det. Michael Do said. Smith told 10News the tragedy and Officer McGrath's actions inspired him to make a career change. He now works as a copier installer but hopes to one day pay it forward by becoming a law enforcement officer. 3353

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A fishing shop in Kearny Mesa was burglarized early Sunday morning. The break-in was caught on the San Diego Tackle Traders' surveillance cameras just before 4:30 a.m. The video shows two suspects, wearing masks and gloves, getting into the shop using a crowbar. The two people can be seen walking into the business, on Convoy Court, with a cooler and some type of container, heading towards the back of the shop. The owners of San Diego Tackle Traders say the suspects got away with several fishing reels and rods, a total value of ,000 to 0,00. The owners tell 10News this is a big blow to their small business. They say they work by appointment only and don't advertise their address online because of the value of the items they sell. The owners are now hoping people will keep an eye out for anyone trying to sell brand new fishing equipment. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department. 964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) San Diego real estate icon Doug Manchester lost his nomination to be the ambassador to the Bahamas after a series of emails that may have implied pay for play proposition, according to a new report.The report, from CBS News, uncovered an email exchange between Manchester and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel. The exchange came just days after Manchester returned from a humanitarian trip to the Bahamas to provide post Hurricane Dorian aid. President Trump nominated Manchester to the ambassadorship in 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -San Diego is expecting the most powerful Santa Ana winds of the season this week. The winds are expected to pick up late Tuesday into Thursday. Cal Fire is urging residents not to let their guard down, but cautions, this is not the time to start clearing defensible space. "This week we really want people to tap the brakes on going out and clearing their property, we don't want them to start the next fire trying to do the right thing, the wrong way, at the wrong time, so please don't clear your property this week, focus on having an evacuation plan so you can get your family members, pets and livestock out when the need arises," said Captain Thomas Shoots, Public Information Officer for Cal Fire San Diego.RELATED: Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsFirefighters from San Diego, Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, and Cal Fire are helping to fight the fires in Sonoma County and the Getty Fire in Los Angeles. Still, Shoots said there is no strain on local resources. "We know that a lot of times, this time of year, we'll have multiple major events happen at the same time, so we can send out plenty of resources and still be staffed up in San Diego so we are watching that very closely and we want to make sure that if anything takes off here we have plenty of resources to draw from," said Captain Shoots. Crews are able to monitor all the fire activity across the state from the command center at the Cal Fire Headquarters in Rancho San Diego. "Regionally, we're looking pretty good, we're fortunate that both fires that we had on Friday we were able to jump on it, put a ton of resources on it, and we were able to stop those before they became major incidents," said Captain Shoots. According to Shoots, this has been a mild fire season compared to last year. "We continue to see fires this year, but most people haven't heard about a lot of the fires that we've had because we've been able to keep them small. With Cal Fire, our goal is to keep 95% of the fires at 10 acres or less, and we've been fortunate with that this year because the conditions have been milder," said Shoots. Right now, Cal Fire crews are working seven-day shifts, instead of the standard three."We've been pretty lucky with the fire activity around the state has been pretty light. Most other years, we've been hit pretty hard, and we start to get worn down this time of year, but 2019 has been relatively good to us.
