A secretive startup backed by Bill Gates has achieved a solar breakthrough aimed at saving the planet.Heliogen, a clean energy company that emerged from stealth mode on Tuesday, said it has discovered a way to use artificial intelligence and a field of mirrors to reflect so much sunlight that it generates extreme heat above 1,000 degrees Celsius.Essentially, Heliogen created a solar oven — one capable of reaching temperatures that are roughly a quarter of what you'd find on the surface of the sun.The breakthrough means that, for the first time, concentrated solar energy can be used to create the extreme heat required to make cement, steel, glass and other industrial processes. In other words, carbon-free sunlight can replace fossil fuels in a heavy carbon-emitting corner of the economy that has been untouched by the clean energy revolution."We are rolling out technology that can beat the price of fossil fuels and also not make the CO2 emissions," Bill Gross, Heliogen's founder and CEO, told CNN Business. "And that's really the holy grail."Heliogen, which is also backed by billionaire Los Angels Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong, believes the patented technology will be able to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industry. Cement, for example, accounts for 7% of global CO2 emissions, 1328
A partial government shutdown remains in effect after funding expired for roughly a quarter of the federal government when the clock struck midnight on Saturday — and it is not clear when it will end.Negotiations between congressional Democrats and the Trump administration over the President's demands for a border wall have so far not yielded an agreement, making it likely that the shutdown will continue until after Christmas. It is even possible that it could still be underway when the new Congress starts in early January. Here's a look at the latest on negotiations and the outlook for the partial shutdown:How long is the shutdown expected to last? The President's incoming acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney 729

An appeals court has rejected the Justice Department's bid to overturn a ruling that cleared the way for AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner. At a hearing in December, D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals judges Judith W. Rogers, Robert L. Wilkins and David B. Sentelle grilled the Justice Department's attorneys about their contention that the original decision by Judge Richard Leon was incorrect.Rogers was appointed by former President Bill Clinton, Wilkins by former President Barack Obama, and Sentelle by former President Ronald Reagan. The Justice Department could decide to ask the full appeals court to hear the case or to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.Time Warner has since been renamed WarnerMedia.
