Some San Diego voters are making a surprising - and alarming - discovery in their mailboxes. They are receiving duplicate mail-in ballots for the November midterm. "Obviously with such a contested election and everything in the news right now, was this actually something bigger?" said April Segal, a Hillcrest resident who received two ballots.Nearly 70 percent of voters in the county say they will vote via the postal service this November. People from Hillcrest to Tierrasanta to Escondido have reported receiving the extra ballots. San Diego Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said there are protections in place to make sure everyone gets one only one vote. He said duplicates are not uncommon and this year is a bit worse than others because of issues with the new voter registration system at the DMV. "Our office and the statewide system runs duplicate checks to determine matches or potential matches," Vu said. "When a duplicate record is identified, the record is merged, with the most recent registration becoming the official record."Vu said no matter which ballot a person submits, it will ultimately be counted. He said anyone who knowingly submits two ballots would be referred to the district attorney for an investigation of voter fraud. Segal said she recently got married, changed her name and registered to vote. A few months later, when applying for a Real-ID at the DMV, she checked the 'yes' box when it asked if she would like to register to vote. That likely led to the duplicate ballot. "I knew I already was registered, but I thought I should just err on yes so that nothing got messed up by saying no," she said. Segal said she would continue to vote by mail, despite the mix-up.  1758

Senator Lindsay Graham has been in office since 2003, and on Tuesday, he secured his fourth term in the Senate by defeating Democrat Jamie Harrison.Around 10 p.m. ET, the Associated Press projected Graham will win reelection. State Senator Marlon Kimpson says Harrison beat a record by raising the most money ever earned by a U.S. Senate candidate.“Who would have ever thought that an African American from a deeply red state would outraise his opponent and raise a sum of 0 million and lead in the polls,” Kimpson said.State Senator Kimpson says Harrison would like to expand access to affordable healthcare and take on criminal justice reform. On the other hand, Senator Graham is known in the Senate for his advocacy of a strong national defense and aggressive interventionist foreign policy.“We looked to Senator Graham for a level of calmness, a reasonable and principled approach. Particularly when he was paling around with Senator John McCain. We looked to those two Republicans to be truly bipartisan and advocate for their respective states,” Kimpson said. However, State Senator Kimpson says U.S. Senator Graham had shown a very partisan approach since President Donald Trump got elected. City Councilor Perry Keith Waring agrees.“Believe it or not I have been a fan of Lindsey Graham for a lot of years. But it seems to me since John McCain died, he is not the moderate voice or somewhat independent thinking person that he once was," Waring said.KJ Kearney, a voter in his 30s, says Harrison understands the voice of all people. “I think the thing that he does understand is Black people are not a monolith. There are conservative Black people, there are liberal Black people, there are all types. And I think he sees the humanity in us and will accept us as the totality of Blackness and not just the Black block that voted for him or didn’t vote for him," Kearney said. If Harrison had won, South Carolina would have been the first state in U.S. history to be simultaneously represented by two Black senators, the AP reported. 2050

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday that Democrats will boycott the committee vote of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. The Senate Judiciary Committee is slated to meet on Thursday to send Barrett’s confirmation to the full Senate. Schumer said Democrats will prevent the committee from having a quorum.Barrett's confirmation is expected to pass through the committee and full Senate with just enough Republican support. Barrett is slated to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died last month.“Democrats will boycott the illegitimate markup tomorrow of Judge Barrett’s nomination in Judiciary and not provide the quorum required Health care is at stake,” Schumer tweeted.” Rights are at stake. But the GOP's showing they're concerned only with raw political power We will not stop fighting”The boycott would force committee chair Lindsey Graham, who is in a tough re-election campaign, to alter the committee’s rules to allow for a quorum.“Judge Barrett is one of the most prepared people to have ever been nominated for the Supreme Court. America will be fortunate to have her as a member of the highest court in the land,” Graham said on Wednesday. “As to my Democratic colleagues’ refusal to attend the markup, that is a choice they are making. I believe it does a disservice to Judge Barrett who deserves a vote, up or down.” 1365

Senate Republicans are poised to introduce their own tax plan Thursday morning -- part of the GOP's ambitious agenda to pass tax cuts before the new year.Republicans will unveil their plan just days after Democrats swept state races in New Jersey and Virginia -- an election GOP members said is a wake up call that their party needs to pass at least one major legislative accomplishment or else face electoral backlash in the midterms."If we don't produce, it'll get worse," Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina told CNN. "The antidote to this problem is to pass a tax cut that Americans believe helps them and their families, to replace a broken health care system with something better. And if we do those things, I think we'll do fine in the fall." 776
