Amid a venomous political atmosphere, the two leading candidates for governor in Utah are making it a point to be civil in the final weeks before the election.Republican Spencer Cox and Democrat Chris Peterson stood side by side in a pair of public service announcements intended to tone down the political rhetoric. Cox, the state’s current lieutenant governor, is largely considered the frontrunner to win the race.“We can debate issues without degrading each other’s character,” Peterson said in the 30-second ad. A longer 60-second announcement was also filmed.“We can disagree without hating each other,” Cox added.“Win or lose, in Utah, we work together,” Peterson added. The two candidates concluded the advertisement with, “We approve this message.” 764

An Ohio man slated to be executed on Wednesday will be allowed to use a special wedged-shape pillow as he is put to death by lethal injection, the Columbus Dispatch reported. Alva Campbell, 69, will lie on the pillow as a three-drug cocktail will be administered to execute Campbell after he was convicted for the kidnapping and killing of an 18-year-old Columbus man. Campbell was on parole at the time after being charged with aggravated murder from a 1972 killing. According to the Dispatch, Campbell has pulmonary problems and it is difficult for him to lie flat without choking.Last week, Ohio Gov. John Kasich said that he would not put a stop to the execution, despite a clemency request by Campbell's attorney.Campbell has also requested to be executed by firing squad, citing that a prison nurse was unable to find a suitable vein for an IV. A federal judge ruled out that as an option for Campbell. The Dispatch reported, citing court records, that Campbell uses a walker, relies on an external colostomy bag and requires four breathing treatments a day. He also may have lung cancer.  1173

An Okeechobee, Florida boy on the autism spectrum is facing his fifth charge, and the boy's mother said she plans on fighting them all, while working to get her son back in school soon. The video his mom shot went viral last year.Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach is now learning there's more trouble for John Benjamin Haygood, the little boy in the middle of it all.His mother, Luanne Haygood, says the state has filed four additional felony charges against John Benjamin. She says the felonies, all of them for felony battery, came as a bit of a surprise, as the incidents in question took place in 2015.“I don't see the point in putting up four more charges that happened when he was 8 years old,” Haygood said. "There's a reason why we don't arrest 8-year-olds."Last year, she recorded video on her phone as school resource deputies took John Benjamin into custody, charging him with felony battery on a school employee. The now 11-year-old is on the autism spectrum, and his mom says it was an autism-related episode. The state prosecutor, however, said John Benjamin has more than 50 other documented incidents of physically aggressive behavior towards students and teachers.“There's so many 7- to 12-year-old boys with autism that are getting arrested for meltdowns and behavior that can be avoided of the schools know how to react,” Haygood said.Haygood said she is fighting back. “He's regressing educationally, he's regressing emotionally, he's not been around other children,” Haygood said.John Benjamin is set to have his next court date next month.WPTV reached out to the state attorney's office, but no one was available for comment Tuesday. 1715

As many parades and gatherings are canceled this Veterans Day, a campaign to honor veterans is taking to social media. Organizers hope it will bring togetherness and attention toward those who have served and sacrificed.“When I returned home from serving on active duty, when I took my uniform off for the last time, I felt like I’d removed my purpose right along there with the uniform,” said Mary Beth Bruggeman, who served eight years in the Marine Corps as a combat engineer.Bruggeman was deployed to Iraq, where she led more than 100 Marines and dozens of vehicles across the border during the Iraq invasion. Yet, when all of that was over, she felt empty."So, for me, finding a way to serve again was the thing I really needed and the other challenges I had that I was facing in my life came after the ability to really find and connect back to that purpose,” Bruggeman said.Bruggeman is the current president of "The Mission Continues.”“It connects veterans with the opportunity to find purpose again through additional skill building and then repurposing those skills in community,” Bruggeman said. While Bruggeman’s organization’s work is always ongoing, t
