WASHINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and U.S. President George W. Bush met at the White House on Tuesday, agreeing to push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.     During the meeting, Yang hailed the great development that two countries have achieved in the past seven years in enhancing China-U.S. relations, which he said also contributed to the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.     He noted that Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Bush have set the direction for the future development of bilateral relations during their meeting held at the sidelines of the Hokkaido G8 summit in Japan earlier this month.     China is willing to work with the United States to follow the direction and push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries, Yang added.     For his part, Bush told the visiting Chinese top diplomat that he is glad to see China-U.S. relations developing on a favorable momentum that the United States is committing to maintaining, and he also appreciates a good working relationship built with Chinese President Hu Jintao.     On the coming Olympic games in Beijing, Yang expressed his welcome to Bush, who is set to attend the opening ceremony, and wished American athletes excellent performance in the competitions.     Bush said, in return, that he looks forward to visiting China to attend the Olympic games' opening ceremony.     On the issues of human rights and religion, Yang told the U.S. president that China would like to continue to exchange its views with the United States on basis of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's domestic affairs, as a way to promote mutual understanding.     He also noted at the meeting that the WTO's Doha Round trade negotiations are at a critical moment, and its success would help promote world economy growth, which is in the common interest of China, the United States and the international community.     China hopes that all sides can work together to push forward with the negotiations and achieve a comprehensive and balanced result, he added.     Yang also met with Stephen Hadley, assistant to the president for national security affairs.

DUSHANBE, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Kyrgyz counterpart Kurmanbek Bakiyev on Thursday agreed to promote cooperation of the two countries in various fields.     During a meeting with Bakiyev here, Hu said "The consensus reached between us during my visit to Kyrgyzstan last year to fully deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas has been orderly put into practice, and bilateral ties have made new progress."     China attaches great importance to its ties with Kyrgyzstan and regards Kyrgyzstan as an important partner in Central Asia, he added.     Hu urged the two sides to well implement bilateral cooperative programs in the building of roads and railways, and to promote business at land ports to deepen bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan, on Aug. 28, 2008, during the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).     The president said China is also willing to strengthen security cooperation with Kyrgyzstan.     Bakiyev said Kyrgyzstan has increased contacts with China "in all fields and at all levels" after Hu's visit in 2007.     He also highly spoke of bilateral cooperation under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and other multilateral organs.     "The Kyrgyz government, legislature and political parties will make all efforts to promote ties and advance cooperation in all areas with China," he said.     Speaking of the situation in Central Asia, Hu said China pays close attention to the changes of regional situation and will make its own efforts to promote solidarity, social stability and economic development among Central Asian nations.     China is also willing to closely coordinate with Kyrgyzstan to make Central Asia become a harmonious region featuring lasting peace and common prosperity, he said.     Bakiyev said Kyrgyzstan will continue to make efforts along with China and other nations in the region to safeguard regional peace and stability.     The meeting was held on the sidelines of the SCO summit which concluded earlier Thursday. The SCO, founded in 2001, groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.     After paying a state visit to Tajikistan and attending the SCO summit, Hu would fly to Turkmenistan on Thursday night. BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao made a tour to east China's Anhui Province on Tuesday to inspect rural reform and development.     Hu, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited Xiaogang village of Fengyang county, the first in the country to initiate the household contract responsibility system in 1978. Chinese President Hu Jintao (C) talks with the villagers as he visits the family of Guan Youjiang in Xiaogang village, Fengyang county, Chuzhou of east China's Anhui Pronvince, Sept. 30, 2008.The system made rural households contractors of farmland, greatly boosting their production enthusiasm and agricultural production. Xiaogang has since been seen as a pace-setter for the nation's rural reform.     Hu said he was glad to see the new changes that have taken place at the village in the past decades.     The current land contractual relations will be kept stable and unchanged for a long time, and we will allow farmers to transfer the right of land contract and management by various means, in accordance with their will, he said.     He said China will continue to increase spending in the development and reform of the rural areas, and to make more policies favorable to the farmers and agriculture.     Hu also pledged to increase the income of Chinese farmers and steadily improve their standard of living in order to make sure farmers benefit from China's economic development.     The third Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee, due to convene between Oct. 9 to 12, will focus on promoting reform and development in rural areas.     On Tuesday afternoon, Hu Jintao also visited two dairy companies in Anhui's Bengbu city.     "Food safety is directly linked to the well-being of the broad masses and the competence of a company," Hu said. "Chinese companies should learn from the lessons of the Sanlu tainted milk powder incident."     Companies should strengthen management and food safety checks, and make sure their products were safe for consumers, he said.     Hu also heard the work reports of Anhui province during his tour, stressing development in urban and rural areas must be coordinated and that efforts must be made to push forward rural development and reform.

BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing global financial turbulence will have a limited impact on China's banks and financial system in the short run, according to officials and experts.     "We feel China's financial system and its banks are, to the chaos developed in the U.S. and other parts of the world, relatively shielded from those problems," said senior economist Louis Kuijs at the World Bank Beijing Office.     He told Xinhua one reason was that Chinese banks were less involved in the highly sophisticated financial transactions and products.     "They were lucky not to be so-called developed, because this (financial crisis) is very much a developed market crisis." Farmers harvest rice in 850 farm in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province on Sept. 26, 2008.    A few Chinese lenders were subject to losses from investing in foreign assets involved in the Wall Street crisis, but the scope and scale were small and the banks had been prepared for possible risks, Liu Fushou, deputy director of the Banking Supervision Department I of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, told China Central Television (CCTV).     Chinese banks had only invested 3.7 percent of their total wealth in overseas assets that were prone to international tumult, CCTV reported. The ratio of provisions to possible losses had exceeded 110 percent at large, state owned listed lenders, 120 percent at joint stock commercial banks and 200 percent at foreign banks.     Kuijs noted most of the banks resided in China where capital control made it more difficult to move money in and out. Besides, the country's large foreign reserves prevented the financial system from a lack of liquidity, which was troubling the strained international markets.     "At times like this, one cannot rule out anything," he said. "But still we believe the economic development and economic fundamentals in China are such that it's not easy to foresee a significant direct impact on the financial system."     However, he expected an impact on China's banks coming via the country's real economy, as exports, investment and plans of companies would be affected by the troubled world economy and in turn increase pressure on bad loans.     Wang Xiaoguang, a Beijing-based macro-economist, said the growing risks on global markets would render a negative effect on China in the short term but provided an opportunity for the country to fuel its growth more on domestic demand than on external needs.     He urged while China, the world's fastest expanding economy, should be more cautious of fully opening up its capital account, the government should continue its market reforms on the domestic financial industry without being intimidated.     Chinese banks had strengthened the management of their investments in overseas liquid assets and taken a more prudent strategy in foreign currency-denominated investment products since the U.S.-born financial crisis broke out, CCTV reported.
