(KGTV) - What a difference books can make for the learning and growth of a child. 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt returned to Imperial Beach Charter School, where students can’t get enough of reading. Nine months ago, they were surprised with a donation of 1,800 books, made by 10News employees and the Scripps Howard Foundation. Each child was able to select two books of their own, with the rest going to the library and classrooms. “Last year, I didn't like to read. But this year I love to read," said 7-year-old Diego. His favorite book is "Hoot Hoot".“It's about owls. They're having a little party," he said.Seven-year-old Adriana loves the adventure of a good book. “My favorite thing about reading is you can imagine stuff while you're reading the book," she said. Her favorite book is "My Weird School". Principal Melissa Griffith says the books have made all the difference to students.“The opportunity for them to learn sounds, to learn words, to take adventures within books, there's really nothing like it and it's so beneficial for our students," said Griffith. “Our students enjoy the books greatly. In addition to that, it allows for additional books to be in our library and also in our classrooms. So in the hands of kids is what we want, and we're so appreciative of that." 1320

If you’re among the 40 million people online looking for love, you know it can be tough finding the perfect match. It might be your fault, but one little change could send you down the aisle. The problem? You may be dating out of your league. A new study found that users who messaged people out of their league typically waited a lot longer to get a reply back or even get a reply at all. "A lot of people try to date out of their league, and they use that terminology," says Chief love officer Michelle Frankel, with New York City Matchmaking. "But it may not result in the end relationship they are looking for; but it might not even be what they perceive it to be."  According to Urban Dictionary, dating out of your league simply means you’ve got no shot. However, Frankel says that’s not true all the time. For example, look at Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel, back in the 1980's.Frankel says dating up like Billy Joel did can work, but it can’t be based on looks alone. “Look what he brought to the table," explains Frankel. "Clearly he was financially set at the time and also he had so much unique talent."  If you date out of your league simply to find someone better looking than you, Frankel says good luck finding a match. "That's not a recipe for a lasting relationship in and of itself. There has to be more compatibility, shared values, same interests and both going in the same direction." Whether you are dating online or in person, Frankel says to stop trying to find your Disney movie moment. "You are never going to find perfection; it doesn't exist," Frankel says.   1707

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise has been released from a Washington, DC, hospital following a "successful" surgery, according to MedStar Washington Hospital Center.The hospital released a statement Saturday saying the Louisiana Republican was discharged from the hospital and "the planned surgery was successful." The congressman "will be recovering at home for the next several days," the statement added.The congressman's Twitter account also shared the statement. CNN reported earlier this month that Scalise was beginning a "series of planned, inpatient procedures" while continuing to recover from injuries he sustained in a shooting last year.Scalise suffered a gunshot wound last summer when a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.In September, Scalise returned to Congress for the first time since the attack, saying at the time that he is "a living example that miracles really do happen."  957

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif., (KGTV) — After six grueling days on the fire line, members of the San Diego-based Strike Team called to fight the Kincade Fire are back home. 10News met with the fire crew from Imperial Beach, who said this was the first time in 11 years that they were called to assist in Northern California. Today, they were back on duty, just hours after their arrival. It's just another day at the Imperial Beach firehouse. Fire Engineer Cory Cooper, firefighter Nick Morales, and Captain Ehren Kahle are cleaning up their ride, Engine 39, after a long trip up north. "It was just kind of a gentle immersion into chaos," Kahle said. Last Friday, the three were part of a large San Diego-based Strike Team called to assist in Sonoma County. As soon as they arrived, they headed straight to the fire line. "It started out with light smoke, which progressively got worse, to a point where my engineer had difficulty seeing the road at some point," Kahle said. Buildings had crumbled, citizens were in chaos. But they were there, fighting the explosive flames, seemingly non-stop."We rest when we can," Kahle laughed. Once the spread slowed down, the team headed back home. The men arrived at 11 p.m. on Thursday. While firefighters in larger departments are given a 24-hour rest period, these guys with the small Imperial Beach department are already back on shift."We're right back to our normal routine."It's day-to-day calls like these, as well as being part of a large Strike Team that reminds Captain Kahle of the true camaraderie of the fire service. "Although I may be going out on a Strike Team with men that I have never worked with or never even met in my entire life, you can probably take a firefighter off of an engine from San Diego, Coronado, National City, or Poway, throw them onto their engine, and they will drive right into that crew and be able to function," Kahle said. If you have a popular payment app on there, you might want to think twice.Popular money transfer apps and services like Venmo, PayPal or Apple Pay are all attached to people’s bank accounts.Brittany Burmeister uses Venmo every day. She wasn’t aware police in cities across the country are warning of a scam circulating, costing some thousands of dollars.It works like this: someone asks to use your smartphone, says their battery died or they left theirs at home, they use your payment app and steal your funds without you even knowing.Joseph Martinez, an information system security professor at Milwaukee Area Technical College, says when you’re not using them, log out of the money apps and while you’re at it, get off of Bluetooth.“They can hack into the phone via the Bluetooth portal and then through that portal have access to any application that you have your password and credentials automatically stored,” said Martinez.He also suggests linking your credit card instead of a debit card, so you have more protection. Burmeister is taking notes, considering her cell, like so many others, is a digital wallet. She says she’s not sure now if she’ll hand off her phone to a stranger. “I’d probably just say 'hey, I bet the restaurant has a phone inside' or if they’re in a public place,” said Martinez. A spokesperson for Milwaukee police hadn’t heard of any reports but urges people to be cautious. Martinez says as another precaution, you should download antivirus and spyware apps and what’s called a VPN app, or "virtual private network."
