CHENGDU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-eight miners were trapped in a colliery flood in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Sunday, the local safety watchdog said.The accident happened at 11 a.m. in Weiyuan County of Neijiang City.Altogether 41 miners were working underground when a pit of Batian Coal Mine was flooded. Thirteen of them escaped, said Lin Shucheng, chief of the provincial work safety bureau.He said rescuers had begun pumping flood water from the pit early in the afternoon. BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has stressed the need to stabilize commodity prices, extend the coverage of the social security network and boost employment to ensure the country develops in a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable manner.Hu made the call Tuesday when presiding over lectures on economic development attended by members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The lectures were given by two researchers respectively from the National Development and Reform Commission and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.Efforts should be made to establish a long-term mechanism that increases consumptions, renovate and upgrade traditional industries, and cultivate and support strategic emerging industries, Hu noted.Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, called for deepening of the country's reform and opening up, adding that improving people's livelihood and ensuring their well-being, promoting economic growth and maintaining social stability are the Party's top agenda.Hu said impetus should be given to the development of the service industry as well as to the coordination of regional development, and vigorous yet steady endeavors should be made to advance urbanization.Hu also called for efforts to embrace reform and innovation in the country's economic, political, cultural and social systems and urged local authorities to seek opinions and advice from the people in formulating regional development blueprints.Further, Hu asked CPC officials to cement their ties with the people and do practical things for the public.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao appointed a new representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization(WTO) and a new ambassador to Myanmar, according to a statement from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.Yi Xiaozhun, 59, previously a vice commerce minister, was appointed representative and ambassador to the global trade body, replacing 64-year-old Sun Zhenyu, who was the country's first WTO representative since China's accession to the WTO in Dec. 2001.Li Junhua was appointed ambassador to Myanmar, succeeding the 54-year-old Ye Dabo.Prior to Thursday's appointment, Li was deputy director of the International Organizations and Conferences Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The appointment was in line with the decision made by the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has ordered a fresh crackdown on the infringement of well-known foreign and domestic brands' intellectual property rights (IPRs).Greater efforts must be made to fight the production and sale of pirated books, audio, video, software, medicine, food and agricultural products, Liu Jinguo, deputy minister of public security, said at a meeting in Beijing Friday, according to a statement posted on the MPS website Saturday.The special nationwide campaign started Friday and will last until March 2011.At a Nov. 5 meeting, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged government agencies to target the root causes of IPRs infringement while strengthening IPRs protection.In a statement Xinhua received Friday, the MPS said Chinese police in a special March 2006 operation uncovered 3,775 cases of IPRs infringement.In a July 2007 campaign conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Intelligence, Chinese police arrested over 20 in connection to the cases.

BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs on Tuesday sent more relief materials to southern regions that had been hit by icy weather, the ministry said in a statement.The batch of 35,000 quilts and 20,000 cotton coats were on their way to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Chongqing Municipality and the provinces of Sichuan and Jiangxi.Since New Year's Day, freezing weather along with sleet has affected several southern regions, disrupting traffic and lives.Weather forecast said Tuesday freezing weather and sleet will continue in south China over the next three days.
