SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Prosecutors said Monday that a California man killed his business partner and his family out of greed, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutor Sean Daugherty told jurors that Charles Ray Merritt wrote checks totaling more than ,000 on his partner’s QuickBooks account after the family disappeared. The comments came during opening statements in the trial for the alleged murders of Joseph McStay, Summer McStay and their three and four-year-old sons. Prosecutors also say that, while being questioned about the family’s disappearance just days after they went missing, Merritt kept referring to Joseph in the past tense.Outside the courtroom, defense attorney Rajan Maline said Merritt’s livelihood depended on McStay being alive. The McStays disappeared from their Fallbrook home in early February 2010. Prosecutors said the family died from blunt-force trauma to their heads. Merritt was arrested in connection with the killings in November 2014 after sufficient evidence linking him to the case, including DNA, was discovered.Authorities alleged Merritt killed the family members inside their home and then buried them in the desert. Merritt also tried to paint over the crime scene, according to authorities.During Monday’s opening statements, jurors in the San Bernardino County courtroom are expected to hear a tape of Merritt being questioned by investigators.Merritt, 61, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and is being held without bail.Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case. 2017

Samuel and Ronan Peterson will have an interesting story to tell for the rest of their lives, thanks to Daylight Saving Time.The infant twins — born overnight on Nov. 6, 2016 — have a strange twist to their ages because of the time change.According to Cape Cod Healthcare in Massachusetts, Ronan is the older twin despite being born 31 minutes after Samuel.How does that work?According to hospital officials, Samuel was born at 1:39 a.m. Eastern and when his twin Ronan was born 31 minutes later, the clock had reset to 1:10 a.m., instead of being 2:10 a.m., because Daylight Saving Time had come to an end.So, despite technically being 31 minutes younger, Ronan's official time of birth is listed as 29 minutes earlier than Samuel's.One of the hospital's maternity nurses, who has 40 years on the job, said she'd never seen anything like it.Seth Peterson, the boys' father, figured something strange was going to happen due to his wife Emily giving birth on the night of Daylight Saving Time's end."I said earlier that night that they were either going to be born on two different days or the time change was going to come into play," he said, according to Cape Cod Healthcare.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk. SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Francisco is a young entrepreneur who loves working with his hands. His dream is to start his own company, but it never seemed very realistic until now.“I will be attending Texas A&M San Antonio and I will be studying business,” Francisco said.Francisco is a first-generation college student. However, he wasn’t sure college would be in the cards for him since another term to define him is undocumented immigrant.“Sometimes you feel like separated from everybody because they’re like, 'oh you’re an immigrant, you’re not from here.’ So, sometimes it’s harder for you because people categorize you,” Francisco said.He says his parents worked hard to make sure he was taking full advantage of his education."My mom legit, she took English classes just to try to help me with school. So that was a major impact for me and I was so grateful for it.”No matter how hard his parents worked, it was still difficult for his family to navigate the U.S. education system, especially considering the added challenges undocumented students face.“For example when my mom would call counselors and ask questions and stuff like that, sometimes they didn’t give you the right information, or they didn’t give you the full information that you need to know,” Francisco said.Francisco’s situation is nothing new, but a nonprofit is trying to change that. Viridiana Carrizales is the co-founder and CEO of ImmSchools.“ImmSchools was created in response to the lack of support that exists in k-12 for undocumented students and families," Carrizales said. "As co-founders we are all formally undocumented women who experienced and navigated k-12 being undocumented and having undocumented parents.”From following protocol for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to understanding a student’s right to pursue higher education, Carrizales says they want to make sure teachers and counselors are trained to help their immigrant students.“We’ve heard from many students that are a part of our programs that they’re still hearing from their teachers from their counselor that being undocumented, you really don’t have opportunities to go to college, that being undocumented you don’t have an opportunity to apply for scholarships,” Carrizales said.But really, going to college is possible, even for undocumented students. In fact, Francisco is now attending a four-year university with a full-ride scholarship through TheDream.Us that ImmSchools helped him apply for. Most scholarships require U.S. citizenship, but the TheDream.Us scholarship is offered to dreamers -- the young immigrants granted legal status after being brought to the U.S. as children.“I looked at my email and surprise to me I had gotten the scholarship.
