DEL MAR (CNS) - Mean Sophia, a 3-year-old filly, has died after suffering an injury while racing at Del Mar Racetrack -- the first equine fatality during a summer meet at the track since 2018.The horse stumbled coming out of the gate in Saturday's seventh race, broke her leg and was euthanized after track veterinarians determined that she could not be saved, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.Mean Sophia was owned by Sinnott Family Trust and trained by Peter Miller, according to the industry website Equibase. Her jockey was Ricardo. Gonzalez. She had eight career starts and one first-place finish.While there have been no racing deaths at Del Mar this year or last, four training deaths were recorded last summer, and four other horses have died at the track this summer -- two in training accidents and two listed for ``other'' causes.Officials with Del Mar and the California Horse Racing Board did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Some animal rights activists have urged the track to suspend racing this weekend due to the extreme heat wave plaguing Southern California.Sunday's high was expected to reach 95 degrees in Del Mar. That was the trigger,” retired first grade teacher, Carol Mason said. “There have been so many more that it just breaks my heart.”The 88-year-old said she was inspired to partake in her first anti-gun demonstration Saturday, after being inspired by the nationwide student walk-out last week.She and more than 100 people held signs and walked along Villa De La Valle, chanting “Never Again!” Especially after the Parkland tragedy, protestors said they could not stand to see another child being killed by gun violence. The San Diego County Fair,” protester, Jill Cooper said. “And all of these wonderful shows like the concerts, and it does seem like a miss match because if we allow gun shows to continue, I think we are sending a chilling message to our children that guns are more important than they are.“Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of San Diego Gun Owners PAC disagreed.Because California has one of the strictest and perhaps most confusing gun laws in the nation, he said that shows like these help gun owners and their families learn proper gun etiquette and practices. He believed that will help avoid future tragedies. “People go learn to get training and get and try different types of firearms legally, that sort of thing,” Schwartz said. “So, if you want responsible firearms ownership, you want a gun show five times a year in Del Mar.”Meanwhile, Mason accepted the fact that she will not see eye to eye with those inside the gun show. But she hoped her first ever protest at age 88 just triggered a new perspective.“We’re not trying to take away their 2nd amendment right,” Mason said. “We’re not trying to remake the whole culture. DEL MAR (CNS) - Border Patrol officials Friday announced that 21 arrests were made earlier this week stemming from a foiled human smuggling operation off the coast of Del Mar.Border Patrol agents spotted a "suspicious vessel" near Dog Beach at about 3 a.m. Tuesday, which was later identified as a panga boat dropping off 16 Mexican nationals.In anticipation of a landing at Camino Del Mar, agents arrived to find a group of people clad in life jackets running toward three vehicles, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.One vehicle was stopped near the scene, while the other two sped off, the Border Patrol said.A 68-year-old U.S. citizen behind the wheel of a 2003 Mazda minivan was arrested along with eight passengers who were Mexican nationals. Two other vehicles were pursued to a hotel in Carlsbad, where the drivers -- both U.S. citizens -- were arrested with eight Mexican nationals who were passengers.According to the Border Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard officials intercepted the panga boat as it was attempting to depart the area, and two Mexican national men aboard were arrested.Border Patrol officials said five people will face human smuggling charges in connection with the incident, while one boat passenger will face charges for re-entry after prior removal. DENVER -- A Colorado man’s vacation in Hawaii took a terrible turn this week when he was attacked by a shark.Dylan McWilliams, 20, was bitten by a tiger shark while surfing in Hawaii.McWilliams received stitches and will be okay, but he could be named the most unluckiest – or luckiest –guy in Colorado.“Yeah, this isn’t my first time being bitten,” McWilliams told Denver7 over a FaceTime call. “Last summer I was attacked by a bear in Boulder. It dragged me out of my tent by my head.”Scripps Denver affiliate KMGH-TV spoke with McWilliams last summer following the attack. He received several scars on his head but ended up okay.“I fought off the bear as much as I could until it dropped me and let me go,” McWilliams said.Less than a year later, and McWilliams gets bitten by a Tiger Shark in Hawaii.“I felt something hit my leg, and I looked down and there was a lot of blood and I saw the shark underneath me,” McWilliams said. “I started swimming as fast as I could to shore.”McWilliams said the shark looked to be between six and eight feet long.But the bear and shark attacks haven't been the only two times he's had a dangerous encounter with wildlife.“When I was sixteen, I was in Utah and I was walking outside and thought I kicked a cactus and it ended up being a rattlesnake,” McWilliams said. “It bit me too.”Denver7 reporter Tomas Hoppough jokingly told McWilliams through the FaceTime call that he is a Colorado version of Steve Irwin – the Crocodile Hunter.“That’s funny you say that because Steve Irwin has been my hero since I was a kid,” McWilliams said. “I always wanted to be like him.”McWilliams will need to stay out of the water during his vacation as his wound heals, but said he will be okay.“I don’t know if I’m unlucky, or really lucky,” McWilliams said. “But my dad said I need to buy a lottery ticket or something.” 1875

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Lifeguards in Del Mar urged caution Tuesday evening after several young white sharks were spotted off the coast. According to the city, lifeguards spotted a juvenile shark Monday off 29th Street and again Tuesday off 15th Street. Specific times weren't mentioned by the city in a news release. The city says neither shark approached the shore or showed aggressive behavior. “Shark experts told lifeguards there is no cause for concern,” the city said. City officials say advisory signs posted Tuesday will remain in place for 24 hours. “Coastal waters in Southern California are a known nursery habitat for white sharks, according the Shark Lab, which studies the physiological and behavioral ecology of marine animals and the effect of human activity on the ocean,” the city added. 818
