Researches in the United Kingdom have found a purr-fect way for you to communicate with your cat.A recent study published in the online journal Scientific Reports found that cats will appear friendlier and more approachable to humans who use slow-blinking, eye-narrowing facial expressions, which psychologists at the Universities of Portsmouth and Sussex referred to as a "cat smile."In their first experiment, 21 cats interacted with their owners. The psychologists' team found that the cats would slow-blink if their owners slow-blinked at them first, compared to a neutral expression. In its second experiment, 24 cats and a member of the research team interacted. The study found that if the experimenter slow-blinked at them first, they were more likely to approach their outstretched hand than if they had given the cat a neutral expression."Collectively, our results suggest that slow blink sequences may function as a form of positive emotional communication between cats and humans," the researchers said. 1022
President Donald Trump seemed to float a new idea about border control during a tax reform roundtable in Ohio. The President was in the midst of criticizing Democrats during a riff about border security when he slipped in the idea that people might "have to think about closing up the country.""They don't want the wall, but we're going to get the wall, even if we have to think about closing up the country for a while," Trump said. "We're going to get the wall. We have no choice. We have absolutely no choice. And we're going to get tremendous security in our country."Trump then mentioned the notion a second time, saying, "And we may have to close up our country to get this straight, because we either have a country or we don't. And you can't allow people to pour into our country the way they're doing." 818
Republican Reps. Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter, who are both facing federal indictments, were re-elected to Congress Tuesday night, CNN projects. Both men were early supporters of President Donald Trump, who blasted the Justice Department earlier this year for investigating the two Republicans.Despite the federal charges against him, which he calls "meritless," Collins has been actively campaigning to keep his seat in New York's 27th Congressional District.Collins, the first House member to endorse Trump's 2016 campaign, has been charged with securities fraud, wire fraud and false statements stemming from alleged insider trading in stock of an Australian pharmaceutical company.Hunter, who represents California's 50th Congressional District, was indicted the same month as Collins in August -- but for charges of campaign corruption related to a quarter-million dollars' worth of charges on his campaign credit card. Hunter claimed he was framed by a "corrupt" Department of Justice but also placed blame on his wife.He went on to suggest that his Mexican-Palestinian-American opponent -- a 29-year-old former Obama administration aide who is Christian -- is a Muslim with ties to terrorism who would threaten the security of US soldiers.Meanwhile, Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, survived a tough re-election bid amid dismal approval ratings following his federal corruption trial that ended in a hung jury. While the Justice Department filed to dismiss charges against Menendez, he was still admonished by the Senate Ethics Committee for accepting gifts without proper approval from a wealthy ophthalmologist and returning in kind with political favors.. 1688
Republicans will keep control of the U.S. Senate following midterm elections on Tuesday. The GOP made good on a favorable map in the Senate and increased its majority after an acerbic midterm election that enshrined America's deep political divides and shaped a highly contentious battleground for the stirring 2020 presidential race.Republicans moved to close off the Democratic path to a Senate majority when challenger Mike Braun beat Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly, and Marsha Blackburn won in Tennessee, according to CNN projections. Republicans later picked up their second Democratic Senate seat of the night when Kevin Cramer beat one Sen. Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, CNN projected. There was a blow for Democratic morale as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz held off a stronger than expected challenge from Beto O'Rourke to win a second term, CNN projected. In one result that did not come as a surprise, former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney won a Senate seat in Utah.Below is a timeline of how more races unfolded Tuesday evening:11 PM EASTERN — UPDATE: 1068
President Donald Trump says he is ready to get back on the campaign trail despite battling COVID-19.Trump said Thursday during an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity that he is hoping to hold a rally in Florida on Saturday night if his campaign team has enough time to put one together.Trump's push for a rally comes just days after he was hospitalized for coronavirus. The 74-year-old publicly announced his positive test result early Friday morning and was receiving care at Walter Reed hospital before being released Monday evening. Trump has not yet given any specifics on where and what time he'd like the rally to kick off this weekend.Presidential physician Dr. Sean Conley released an update on Trump’s coronavirus prognosis on Thursday, stating that he has “remained stable and devoid of any indications to suggest progression of illness.”Trump was diagnosed with the coronavirus late Thursday night, just hours after traveling to New Jersey for a fundraiser. The following day, Trump was admitted to Walter Reed Medical Center as he was given an experimental antibody treatment, steroids, and other remedies to fight off the coronavirus.By Monday, Conley and Trump’s medical team signed off on releasing him to the White House.Conley said on Thursday he expects Trump to be able to resume public engagements on Saturday. 1340
