Shanghai -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown hailed a new era of environmental cooperation between Britain and China on Saturday and called for a renewed drive for a world trade deal.Brown visited a highly efficient gas-fired power station in Beijing and studied the plans for an environmentally friendly town to be built near Shanghai to underline his keenness to cooperate with China on fighting global warming."We now enter this new era of environmental cooperation," Brown told a news conference in Shanghai after listening to a presentation on Dongtan, billed as the world's first eco-city.Construction is due to start early this year at Dongtan, designed by British engineering firm Arup. It will use renewable energy and will not allow gasoline-fuelled cars.It is the first of a number of low-carbon eco-towns being planned by both Britain and China.Brown, who flies to India on Sunday, pleaded for progress in slow-moving talks on a new world trade agreement."I would like the talks which have now been stalled for some months to resume," he said. All sides would have to compromise to reach a deal but the differences can be bridged, Brown said."In the next few weeks I will ... talk to all the potential players as I've done with the Chinese government, as I will do tomorrow with the Indian government, (about) the importance of us moving forward to a trade agreement as soon as possible."

For the first time in 300 years, the renowned Shaolin Temple held a ritual on Thursday to initiate 600 believers into monkhood. On that same day, millions of monks and believers nationwide observed the Buddha bath festival which usually includes the washing of all statues of the Buddha. The ceremony used to be considered an official ritual to recognize a believer into true monkhood. Shi Yongxin, leader of Shaolin Temple and vice- president of the Buddhist Association of China, said that Buddhism in China has embarked on a "golden era" of development with a rapidly increasing number of believers. According to Shi, China has about 100 million registered religious believers, most of whom are Buddhists and Taoists. "They form an indispensable force to construct a harmonious society," he said. Shi said the ritual was suspended for 300 years because the altar where the ritual was held was destroyed. The 26-meter-high three-storey alter was restored last year at the temple, located in Dengfeng, Central China's Henan Province. The 600 Buddhists were selected out of 1,000 pious Buddhists nationwide. Shi said that only Buddhists who have passed a long-term inspection and are believed to have a "pre-destined lot" with Buddhism will be allowed to take the ritual and admitted by the temple. "Only Buddhists who practice Buddhism to a high level can be tonsured and allowed to take the ritual," Shi said. The ritual will last 28 days during which time the 600 monks will listen to doctrines, learn Buddhism rituals and manners in the temple. Both Buddhism and Taoism seem to be attractting more believers. An international forum on the "Daode Jing", a classic of Taoism, was held last month and lured 300 Taoists from around the world who wanted to explore the true essence of the classic text.

Beijing and Seoul recently signed an agreement to launch a joint program to harness China's eighth-largest desert - the Ulan Buh in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.About 15 million yuan (.99 million) will be spent growing trees and building greenhouses to prevent environmental deterioration in the Ulan Buh region, according to officials involved in the project. The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has promised million for the project, while the local government will come up with the rest, according to Han Yongguang, deputy chief of Dengkou county, of which almost 80 percent is covered by desert."It is the first time that we have launched a joint program with a governmental institution from the Republic of Korea (ROK) on desert control," said Han, adding that the local government welcomes more international participation in the battle against desertification."We have made big progress in driving back the desert in this region since the 1980s; and international cooperation will help speed up the process of ecological balance." The local government has spent about 400 million yuan in recent years to contain the expansion of the desert, said Han."The cooperation also helps dispel any doubts over China's determination in environmental protection," Han added.Kim Kwang-young, chief of KOICA's China office, said: "I feel the Chinese government has fully recognized the importance of environmental protection."KOICA's collaborative programs in China are mainly focused on the environmental sector including afforestation, prevention of desertification, and joint monitoring of sandstorms, according to Kim.

China is moving in the direction of raising its caps on foreign ownership in banks but has no timetable for doing so, Liu Mingkang, head of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, said on Thursday. "It takes time, but it's the orientation -- we are moving forward," Liu told reporters after meeting with U.S. lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Asked whether he knew when the caps, currently set at 25 percent, would be lifted, Liu replied: "There is no timetable." U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has been pushing hard in an effort to get China to raise the caps and improve the access U.S. firms have to China's financial sector. China's central bank governor, Zhou Xiaochuan, also said China needed to further assess the economic situation before deciding on more monetary tightening measures. "We already have some tightening policies, so we are not hurrying to make any further -- it takes time to look at the feedback," Zhou said. Liu and Zhou were part of a top-level Chinese delegation in Washington for two days of talks with Bush administration officials hosted by Paulson, as well as meetings with legislators upset over the huge U.S. trade deficit with China.

Fifty-two workers were trapped early Sunday when a torrent of mud and water engulfed a rail tunnel under construction in central China. Rescue teams managed to free 35 of the workers building the tunnel in Hubei province and the remaining 17 trapped about 200 metres (660 feet) below ground would soon be freed, the Xinhua New Agency added. Earlier reports said 38 workers were trapped in the accident Heavy rains have triggered severe flooding and mudslides across many areas of central China in recent weeks. According to Xinhua news agency, 78 people died and 18 are still missing after three days of downpours set off flash floods in Henan province in the past week. More than 700 people have been killed by floods, landslides and lightning this year in China, according to latest official figures that have yet to tally the past week's casualties.
