The State Bar of California filed to place attorney Michael Avenatti on involuntary inactive status on Monday. The move is the first step toward disbarment, said Teresa Ruano, program supervisor for the Office of Strategic Communications for the State Bar of California. The filing comes after Avenatti was indicted on 36 counts by a federal jury in California in April. The charges include embezzlement, wire fraud, tax evasion, bankruptcy fraud and bank fraud connected to his alleged theft of tens of millions of dollars from five clients, one a paraplegic. In a separate case in New York, Avenatti is accused of attempting to extort more than million from sportswear company Nike. He was also charged with fraud and aggravated identity theft involving his former client, Stormy Daniels. Prosecutors accused him of stealing about 0,000 of a book advance intended for Daniels.Ruano says there are still several steps before Avenatti would be disbarred but a change to "inactive involuntary status" would prevent him from practicing law in the state of California.Avenatti has 10 days to file a response and request a hearing. If no response if filed, he will have waived his right to a hearing. The State Bar must file a status decision within 30 days of the hearing.Avenatti responded to the State Bar's action in a tweet on Monday."The action by the CA State Bar is nothing more than a 'pile-on' and was entirely expected in light of the pending charges. I offered to cooperate with the Bar and instead they decided to issue a press release as a stunt. I look forward to being fully exonerated by the facts." 1629
The White House communications team is losing a longtime member as Lindsay Walters is set to depart the administration.Walters will leave her post as deputy press secretary in April for a role as vice president of US public affairs at public relations firm Edelman, the White House announced Tuesday alongside a series of glowing on-record statements."There are few talents who also have the savvy, sophistication and street smarts to thrive inside a West Wing as intense as this one. Lindsay Walters is one of them. The President and all of his staff are thankful for her service and we wish her all the best," chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said.Walters joined the administration at its beginning in January 2017. She previously worked on the Republican National Committee's press team as a spokeswoman under then-communications director Sean Spicer. The announcement comes as the White House communications team undergoes a series of changes. Hogan Gidley was recently promoted to principal deputy press secretary with the departure of Raj Shah, who left for the private sector. Two additional deputy press secretaries, Judd Deere and Steven Groves, were added to the team, each with their own assigned areas of focus, a return to its original structure.Press secretary Sarah Sanders will be the only remaining original high-level member of the White House press team after Walters' departure. Sanders and the first lady's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, both began as deputy press secretaries with Walters, but Grisham transitioned to the East Wing early in the administration.Throughout the administration, the communications team has 1661

Thousands of islands dot the Pacific Ocean between Asia's southern coast and Australia, and the people who live on them have stayed mostly isolated from the digital age.The assumption by many internet providers is that "there's not many people there, they don't need connectivity, and there's not a lot of money," Christian Patouraux, the founder and CEO of satellite startup Kacific, told CNN Business.Patouraux said he knows that to be false.Six years ago, he founded Singapore-based Kacific after he saw a market analysis that showed the Asia-Pacific region is starved for internet access, and people are willing to pay for it.Now, they are several steps closer to getting that access. On Monday evening, a SpaceX rocket launched Kacific's first satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Patouraux said it could soon bring consistent internet connections to as many as 1 million people for the first time.Internet for islandersThe biggest obstacle to extending broadband across the Asia-Pacific is one of topography: Broadband is delivered primarily by copper or fiber optic cables, including some that stretch under the Atlantic Ocean. The US military has been ordered to withdraw about half the troops in Afghanistan, a US defense official with direct knowledge of the matter told CNN on Thursday. The official said planning is underway, and it could take months to withdraw the nearly 7,000 troops. The decision was made Tuesday, at the same time as President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the US military from Syria -- moves that precipitated Defense Secretary James Mattis' 457
The Senate has overwhelmingly approved a new North American trade pact that rewrites the rules of trade with Canada and Mexico. Passage of the measure gives President Donald Trump a major policy victory before senators turns their full attention to his impeachment trial. The measure goes to Trump for his signature. It would replace the 25-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, known as NAFTA. It tore down most trade barriers and triggered a surge in trade. But Trump and other critics blamed NAFTA for encouraging U.S. companies to move their manufacturing plants south of the border to take advantage of low-wage Mexican laborers. 654
