SAN DIEGO — The race between two Democrats vying to become San Diego's next mayor is neck and neck, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll shows State Assemblyman Todd Gloria leading City Councilwoman Barbara Bry 39 percent to 38 percent, with 24 percent undecided. The results are well within the SurveyUSA poll's 5.3 percent margin of error. The race is even closer now than it was a month ago, when a similar poll showed Bry leading Gloria 37 percent to 34 percent, also within the margin of error. While both are Democrats, the poll showed Bry getting a majority of her support from Republicans and Independents, while Todd Gloria retained a lead among Democrats. "Barbara Bry is talking about neighborhood issues and slowing down the growth of San Diego, whereas Todd Gloria is talking about addressing housing and doing some growth," said Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego. "That finds a political divide over growth that often separates moderates from liberals, or Democrats from Republicans even though both of these candidates Barbara Bry and Todd Gloria are both strong Democrats."Gloria took home 41 percent of the vote in the March primary, with Bry coming in second with 23 percent. She beat out Republican Scott Sherman by 1,189 to get into the top-two runoff, and his voters appear to be supporting her. SurveyUSA's poll shows 46 percent of Republicans voting in the mayor's race are supporting Bry, while 46 percent of independents voting in the race also plan to support Bry. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A 76-year-old woman who died on May 24 is the first local fatality of e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday.Three vaping-associated lung injuries in young adults were confirmed in recent weeks and are the first reports of the lung illness in San Diego County since 2019.All the newly reported local cases tested negative for the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, and all reported recently vaping products containing THC.The California Department of Public Health recently recognized new reports of confirmed lung-injury cases in persons vaping THC-containing products in April, after no cases had been reported since February.Since July 2019, a total of 52 EVALI cases have been reported in San Diego County residents. All patients had to be hospitalized."While our community is understandably focused on COVID-19, it is important to remember that lung injury from vaping is still a major public health concern," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. "People who vape, especially those using THC-containing products, are urged to stop."In January, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to restrict the sale of flavored smoking products and e-cigarette and vaping devices in the county's unincorporated areas. These restrictions were proposed as a response to the e-cigarette- or vaping-associated lung injury cases in the county and across the country. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 12-year-old girl suffered a broken arm and leg when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a San Diego street, authorities said.It was reported at 10:48 p.m. Saturday in the 10600 block of Tierrasanta Boulevard, said San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The girl was crossing the street in a crosswalk but against a red pedestrian crossing signal, Heims said.``An unknown vehicle was westbound on Tierrasanta Boulevard and struck the pedestrian,'' he said.
