CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The owner of Lhooq Books is hoping the community can help him out, after being served with a 60-day notice to vacate.Sean Christopher has owned and run Lhooq Books on Carlsbad Village Drive for a decade. His book store specializes in rare books. It also features a public library outside, where people can either buy books for a donation or borrow them. It also hosts small public art events.But all of it is at risk.Christopher says he contacted his leasing company, Pacific Coast Commercial, in September to ask about the state of his rental agreement. Instead of getting answers, he says they served him with a notice to vacate."It was a complete and utter shock," says Christopher. "There was not even a hint that anything was wrong."In addition to being forced to leave his store, Christopher says he's also been told to leave his home, which he rents from the same company. The store and home are both on the same plot of land.Christopher says part of the shock came because of all the work he's done on the property. He estimates that he's spent thousands of dollars to clean up the home and renovate the store."I've basically replaced, repaired or deep cleaned absolutely every inch of the property," he says.He also says he had an agreement with the owner to do more work over the next few months to add a new entrance to the book store and a new storage shed in the home's yard.Now, he's confused why the owner would make that agreement and then force him out.Christopher says there's no way he can uproot his life, family and business in under two months."To find a suitable retail store, and a home, and then pay security deposits and first and last month's rent on both, while continuing to pay rent here, it's literally impossible," says Christopher.When he reached out for a follow-up with the rental company, Christopher says they told him their decision was "just business."They also told him to stop calling, or he'd be given a 3-day eviction notice.Now he wants to fight back. Christopher says he understand's the owner's rights to end his lease, but he hired a lawyer to try and get an extension."I'm not being unreasonable," he says. "I'm just trying to get a compromise, a resolution so that I can relocate without maxing out my credit cards or going bankrupt and possibly homeless."To help pay legal fees, Christopher has set up aGoFundMe account. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (CNS) -- Three wildfires continued burning across open terrain on the grounds of Camp Pendleton Wednesday, sending plumes of smoke over northern San Diego County but posing no threats to military or civilian structures.The flames began spreading through training areas toward the center of the Marine Corps base on Monday.As of Wednesday afternoon, base officials said one of the fires, dubbed the Wood Fire, has burned 7,000 acres and is 20 percent contained.A second fire, called the India Fire, has burned 1,100 acres and is 20 percent contained.A third fire named the Range Fire is burning in the Range 706 Yankee impact area and has charred 500 acres, according to base officials.Base officials said the fires are expected to produce smoke through the remainder of the day, and the fires are not posing a threat on or off the base.Military firefighters have been aided by Cal Fire ground and airborne crews in their effort to corral the blazes.Officials have disclosed no cause for the fires. CHICAGO (AP) — Americans are more unhappy today than they’ve been in nearly 50 years.That's according to the COVID Response Tracking Study, conducted in late May by NORC at the University of Chicago.The survey finds that just 14% of American adults say they’re very happy, down from 31% who said the same in 2018.The survey draws on nearly a half-century of research from the General Social Survey, which has collected data on American attitudes and behaviors at least every other year since 1972.No less than 29% of Americans have ever called themselves very happy in that survey.Researchers say the COVID-19 pandemic has led to two seemingly contrasting shift in public opinion: More Americans are unhappy and pessimistic about the future than in previous decades, but more are relatively satisfied financially.“In combination, these results suggest that people are comparing their finances to that of fellow Americans hurt by the economic fallouts from the pandemic while contrasting their happiness to their own mood prior to the outbreak,” the study says. 1068
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — A brush fire on Camp Pendleton sent heavy smoke into the air above Oceanside Tuesday.Residents reported seeing heavy smoke in the North County from the base. Camp Pendleton officials say the fire closed Stewart Mesa Rd., between Donald Cook and the 41 Area, at about 1:30 p.m.The blaze reached 18 acres before fire crews stopped its forward progress just before 2 p.m. No personnel or structures were threatened, according to the base.The brush fire ignited as the region endures elevated fire danger, with gusty offshore winds in the mountains and foothills and humidity hovering between 15 and 25 percent. 647
CARLSBAD, Calif. (CNS) - The city of Carlsbad announced Thursday it was temporarily suspending its collection fees for sidewalk cafes, outdoor displays and curbside cafe permits to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.This suspension of permit fees also means reimbursement of around ,000 to businesses that paid for these types of permits since March 1 of this year. Fee reimbursement and the revenue offset from the suspension of fee collection will be funded from the Economic Recovery and Revitalization Initiative funds. Of those funds, 5,000 remains for contingency or future city council actions.When the pandemic's public health orders required the closure of indoor operations, Carlsbad relaxed development standards to allow businesses to use these permits to quickly activate outdoor spaces on public sidewalks. Some businesses were also granted no-cost permits allowing them to use private property such as their parking lots, to add to their existing outdoor areas.On July 28, the City Council also relaxed standards for curbside cafes, allowing restaurants to use up to four street parking stalls to expand outdoor dining.The permits normally cost a one-time payment of 1 and ,200 per parking stall per year. These fees are now temporarily suspended until February 28, 2021, or for the duration of the local COVID-19 pandemic emergency, whichever is later.More than 70 businesses have been permitted, including restaurants, fitness classes, hair and nail salons, spas and churches, allowing them to temporarily move their operations outdoors onto private property, public sidewalks and on-street public parking spaces so that they can comply with public health guidelines.According to a statement from the city, even with the county now allowing indoor dining, retail shopping or fitness classes, capacity has been reduced by 50% to 90%, depending on the type of business.
