SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego and the San Diego Housing Commission announced details about a planned purchase of two hotels to convert into permanent housing for the homeless.After a six-month search, city officials announced the purchase of the Residence Inns in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. The price tag: 6.5 million.Scott Marshall of the San Diego Housing Commission says the project draws upon city, county and state funds to turn hotel rooms into 332 affordable apartments for the homeless, many of them currently staying at the convention center as part of the program, Operation Shelter To Home."This is not temporary shelter. They are permanent homes that will provide them a path out of the shelter and off the streets," said Marshall.Marshall says of the 29 sites considered, the two Residence Inns stood out."They were operating as hotels and in good condition. They didn't require a lot of work for people to move in," said Marshall.Federal housing vouchers will help residents with part of the rent. They'll also receive a host of wraparound services."Things like health care, Life skills training and employment assistance to help them get back on their feet and to a more stabile life," said Marshall.The hotels turned apartments reside in commercial areas, with many other motels and hotels as neighbors. SDSU marketing professor Miro Copic says any issues at the sites could turn into pubic relations problems."Tourists and travel agents could see it as a negative, and it may turn away people from the area. The city has to manage this effectively. If it does so, it may not have much of an impact on nearby hotels," said Copic.If the city council approves the purchase in October, the apartments could be ready by December. 1768

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is close to completing a project that will protect a popular Ocean Beach walking path from erosion.People who live along Orchard Avenue say the pathway that goes along the coast has been falling apart in the past few years, as tidal surges wear away the concrete."It was falling apart. The sidewalk's coming up, you could have tripped," says Tony Nieves, who lives on the corner nearby. "It's nice to see something done about it."Over the winter, the City started construction on a 3,000 project to rebuild the walkway and add break rocks and rip rap to protect it. It's part of a bigger plan to revitalize staircases and walkways along the coast to improve beach access, which the city started working on in 2008.Rainy, windy weather delayed the Orchard Avenue part of the project, which was supposed to be completed by the start of spring.This past week, the city installed large, man-made rocks to the coast to break up waves. They also added green metal cages around them, leading people to fear they'll get so big they may block views."I come down here most nights that I'm not working, just to catch the sunset," says Brittany Hagedorn. "Living a block away makes it easy."In a statement, the City told 10News the boulders will get another layer of concrete above the cages and they hope to have the project completed before Memorial Day Weekend.In the meantime, people who live nearby will have to wait to use the path again.The full statement from the City of San Diego is below:"The man made boulders being constructed are part of the project to reconstruct the beach access walkway at Orchard Ave. The boulders are intended to protect the newly-installed sidewalk, because this section of sidewalk has previously been seriously damaged by tidal surges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The largest employer in the country is waving away a long standing tradition. Walmart is planning to phase out its greeters at more than 1,000 stores across the country. The retail giant says it is moving forward with a new role called “customer host” that is more physically demanding. The hosts will still greet people but must also be able to pass physical exams including lifting a 25-pound box and climbing ladders. Critics say the move targets their elderly and disabled employees, which make up a significant portion of the company’s greeters. “I can’t do that,” said Adam Catlin, who has cerebral palsy and has worked as a Walmart greeter for a decade. Walmart says it is striving to place greeters in other jobs at the company and the title of greeter will be officially eliminated April 26. “I want to keep my job past April 26 because I have made a lot of good friends and a lot of good memories over the years,” added Catlin. Walmart has not said how many greeters will lose their jobs but adds it is, “extending the current 60-day greeter transition period for associates with disabilities while we explore the circumstances and potential accommodations, for each individual, that can be made within each store.” 1252

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fight over the future of short-term vacation rentals in San Diego is now targeting paid signature gatherers hired by the largely Airbnb-funded campaign.The campaign, called "Stand for Jobs, Stop the Vacation Rental Ban," needs to raise about 35,000 signatures to overturn the City Council's recent vote to limit short-term vacation rentals essentially to primary residences. A group of residents called the San Diego Community Working Group on Short-Term Vacation Rentals is now drafting a letter to multiple city officials alleging that the signature gatherers are misleading voters with false information about the regulations. RELATED: Airbnb: San Diego teachers made .7M renting out their home last year"You won't be able to do bed and breakfast, and then there's a huge emphasis on the amount of money on the fee. There is no fee for home sharing," said Gary Wonacott, a member of the group, giving examples of what he's heard.There are now upwards of 200 signature gatherers around San Diego. On Friday, there were five of them spread across the Target shopping center on Sports Arena Boulevard.LaKeisha Weaver says she is being paid more than for every signature she gets. "It's just like a traveling position."Weaver says she tries to engage voters with a very brief verbal pitch and has official literature for them to read.
