SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two weeks after their son was killed, the parents of Alexander Mazin spoke to 10News for the first time about the brutal attack.Penelope and Jeffrey Mazin say their son left for the 24 Hour Fitness gym on Midway Dr. around 9 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2018.“I said 'I love you' and I kissed him on his little fuzzy beard,” remembered his mom, “and he walked out the door. I’m glad I saw him that morning.”He was scheduled to meet with his dad at noon, but by 12:05, his parents were already worried. He was never late.They started calling hospitals and police stations. Little did they know, officers were already searching for him.“Two plainclothes detectives in black cars pulled up and my heart sunk because I knew right then and there something horrible must have happened,” said Jeffrey.The suspect in the case has been identified as Ernesto Castellanos.The Mazins say Castellanos was in a previous relationship with their son’s girlfriend. They say Alexander had been dating the woman for about three months but kept their relationship somewhat private.There were warning signs. Two weeks before the killing, they say Castellanos had attacked the woman while she was working out with Mazin at a 24 Hour Fitness.Castellanos’ whereabouts are unknown. Arian Tabatabaei's family runs Huapangos in Hillcrest. His parents, Viri and JT, have owned it for more than a decade. Arian and his twin work there to help their parents. "It's been good until now," he said. Like many, their future is up in the air. "It's completely dead in Hillcrest right now," he said. "We're not making any profit to help anybody... all these bills that are coming in, they're just piling right now." They've had to lay off most of their employees. Tabatabaei said they dropped their prices, simplified their menu, and are offering take out or delivery. There's been an ongoing effort on social media to promote businesses that are still open.Laura posted on Twitter that she got pizza for her birthday from Tribute Pizza in North Park. She wrote that "they put your food on your car hood to be totally contact-free." The San Diego Emerald Society posted that they pick up wings from Dirty Birds in Pacific Beach. "They are donating food to healthcare workers and other first responders," the post said. Tabatabaei has a message for San Diegans. "Just stay strong throughout this. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers over the weekend seized 461 pounds of narcotics worth more than .1 million and captured 14 fugitives.Officers intercepted 350 pounds of methamphetamine, 71 pounds of cocaine and 36 pounds of marijuana.The drugs were seized and the arrests made between Friday, October 27 and Sunday, October 29.The drugs were discovered in vehicles’ floor, car battery, seats, gas tank, tires and quarter panels, according to the agency.The 14 fugitives were arrested for charges including homicide, wire fraud, robbery and parole violations.One of those arrested was Deven Bargas, 20. Authorities say Bargas was wanted by the San Jose Police Department for homicide. 724

San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. We have hydrophones that’’s able to create an acoustic pinger in the pool.”Team Inspiration took home first place in the overall competition, technical design, and website. The team came in second place in the video presentation category.Team inspiration is the only middle and high school team to ever win the world title in RoboSub’s 23-year history. 1767
