BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday arrived in northeast China's port city of Dalian, the first stop of his three-day China visit.This is Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.On Sunday, Medvedev will visit a memorial to the Soviet Union war dead and meet with veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945).During his stay in the city, the Russian president will stop by the Dalian Institute of Foreign Languages, where he will have brief discussions with Russian language professors and students. He is also slated for a meeting with leaders of northeast China's Liaoning Province.More important meetings are scheduled for Monday when the Russian leader visits Beijing. He will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.On Monday evening, Medvedev will travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Floods, landslides and heavy downpours brought by typhoon Fanapi had claimed 55 lives in south China's Guangdong Province, while another 42 were still missing, local authorities said Thursday.Meanwhile, more than 1.26 million people were affected and 98,000 in low-lying areas were forced to be evacuated, a spokesman with the provincial civil affairs department said.Rainstorms and and geological disasters had destroyed more than 4,200 homes and inundated more than 48,700 hectares of cropland, the spokesman said.Direct economic losses were estimated at more than 2 billion yuan (300 million U.S. dollars), he said.Tonnes of relief supplies, such as tents, clothes, quilts, bottled water and rice, have been dispatched to the disaster-hit areas.Helicopters were used Thursday to airdrop relief materials to victims.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Li Yuanchao, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with a delegation of Costa Rica's National Liberation Party (NLP) led by President Bernal Jimenez in Beijing Tuesday. BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Tuesday that China would coordinate its national family planning policy, stabilizing an appropriately low birth rate and improving the quality of its population."The fact remains that China has a large population. The issue of population is always a major issue for China's social and economic development," said Li at a seminar marking the 30th anniversary of the Family Planning Association of China in Beijing.The government must solve the issue in a way that takes into consideration the whole picture of China's long-term social and economic development, he said.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded.The Chinese government adopted a family planning policy in the late 1970s which basically permits most urban households to have only one child.The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.Li said the government would make efforts to improve the quality of the population, optimize the population structure and spur the rational distribution of the people, so as to turn the pressure of the population into an advantage of human resources.He also said the government would launch measures to narrow the widening ratio of men to women and address problems arising with an aging population.The population aged at or above 60-years-old will top 200 million by the end of 2015, government reports showed.

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, said in an editorial that the Shanghai World Expo provided the world with an opportunity to weigh the future at a time when mankind is faced with serious challenges.The editorial, to be carried by the newspaper on Monday, bid farewell to the the 184-day Expo which lowered the curtain on Sunday.The editorial reads, industrial civilization is a double-edged sword, enriching modern lives and bringing challenges at the same time, such as environmental degradation and rapid urbanization, and the Shanghai World Expo made people stop and think about the future.The Shanghai Expo made history, registering over 73 million visitors and 246 participating countries, regions and international organizations, the editorial says.The editorial reads, the Shanghai World Expo is the first exhibition whose theme focused on the city. Though the expo is ending, people's hopes and expectations, pinned on cities, will endure, as will the efforts the international community makes in reaching common ground in a diversified world amidst the concept of sustainable and low-carbon development.
