"It looked like a war zone of black smoke everywhere all over the place of all the roads blocked off," Homeowner Bob Payne said.He was at his relative's home when he got the call, and rushed back Carlsbad to see what he could do. He said he was lucky to have been out of town, otherwise he said he would've been on his driveway fighting the flames with a garden hose.His home was one of 65 structures that burned. Firefighters fought as 14 separate fires grew, eventually?covering 26,000 acres.At Bob's home, all that was left was a safe, full of photos of smiling children and their wedding memories. It took two and a half long years, to rebuild. He didn't want to leave their prime hilltop location, close to the beach and to town."It looks different, we changed our house some. We kept the same floor plan but we put in a couple perks in there which is nice," Bob said they had a pool put in and some exterior and interior designer changes.Nearby SDG&E did an update of their own, switching out wood poles for more durable metal ones."It burned up here and the and the fire department said it was 65-foot flames that came up and went to the attic of the house and burned it down," Bob said, explaining the fire flew up one of the poles and arched down to the roof of his home.Bob said he would never forget the generosity of the neighbors and complete strangers who gave everything from clothes, to food, to necessities to help his family through the disaster."I wish everybody a happy's Mother's Day on this day and count your blessings, and just enjoy your family and enjoy your health and everything that you have," saying he's thankful for the things that can't be touched by flames. 1992

"But, the rules are so simple on how to learn."Prior to the pandemic, i-Play created interactive games for kids."We have these floor projection games, table projection games, that are all interactive," Storey said.But seeing a need for more at-home entertainment, and noticing a gap in the golf game market, Storey and his team entered Shuffle Golf into Walmart's Open Call for U.S.-manufactured products.It's an effort by the retail giant to inject millions into America's small businesses. Shuffle Golf won distribution out of 5,000 submissions."The buyer recognized the concept is cool," Storey said. "It's different. It's a quality game. It's made in America. And, that's exactly what Walmart is doing today."The game uses a vibrant carpet mat, which allows for two-way putting, has various scoring sections around the green, and includes negative scores for sand and water hazards. And, you can knock your opponents' ball off the course."It's a great educational tool for math for young kids," Storey said. "And, parents now are having to teach their kids and home school and so forth."But, Storey said the game is great for all ages and all skill levels. And, it can get competitive.It's teeing up the fun, just in time for the holidays."Now, (families) have a new game to play, outside your Bocce Ball, or Monopoly, or all these different traditional games," Storey said. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- As a way to deal with San Diego’s growing roadway congestion, more communities are installing mini-roundabouts to slow speeding drivers. Yet some neighbors in North County are calling them death traps.If you take a drive down Cassia Road in Carlsbad, you’ll see mini-roundabouts, also known as mini-circles, that are causing a big fuss. Fire Captain Nick Valenzuela lives in the neighboring community. “I've come down [to the road] because I’ve heard traffic accidents from my house and come down and helped people,” he tells us.“I've seen the aftermath of at least two accidents,” adds neighbor Mark Bua, who is also a police officer. Bua says the mini-circles are so small that drivers blow right past them without yielding for oncoming traffic. He shared photos of debris from some of the collisions.The mini-circles on Cassia Road were installed at the end of 2016 as a way to slow traffic in bustling North County.Mini-circles have had great success in other booming cities like Seattle, which now has more than 1,000 of them with a 90% reduction in collisions.Dan Burden is a renowned traffic expert. He was once named one of the most important civic innovators in the world, according to TIME Magazine. We asked Burden to review photos of the Carlsbad mini-circles. “[They’ve] got some design issues,” he told us. “In this case the circle is so small and there's no consequence in getting close to it. They're designed in a way that a motorist could go much too fast,” he adds.Burden is a fan of mini-circles, if they're done right. He says they're easier on cars than speed bumps and create better flow than stop signs. "They slow traffic down to 15 to 20 miles per hour upon entry,” he adds.However, Carlsbad neighbors claim they’re playing chicken with speeding drivers and lives are at risk.10News submitted a request with the City of Carlsbad to review the number of recent collisions Cassia Road. According to reported incidents, collisions actually appear to have dropped since the mini-circles were installed.Nearby Leucadia is hoping to soon install mini-circles along the congested North Coast Highway 101. A few years ago, the mini-circles were installed in the Bird Rock community of La Jolla, where motorists are now driving half as fast as they used to. On Harbinson Avenue in La Mesa, the circles were removed a few years after neighbors complained about safety concerns.The City of Carlsbad is reportedly monitoring and making refinements to the mini-circles on Cassia Road, but is aware of residents’ concerns and will consider making more changes in the upcoming months.“This is Carlsbad. Things are supposed to be done right. This is not right. This [was] not done right at all,” adds Valenzuela. 2782
