And the President is treating them like poker chips at one of his failed casinos."After a weekend and two holiday days for federal employees, Wednesday was the first regularly scheduled workday affected by the closure of a variety of federal services. A brief statement Thursday from the office of Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, the No. 3 Republican, spoke to the dim prospect for a quick solution. "Please stay tuned to future updates for more information."The shutdown started Saturday when funding lapsed for nine Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies. Roughly 420,000 workers were deemed essential and are working unpaid, while an additional 380,000 have been furloughed.While the White House was talking to congressional Democrats — and staff talks continued on Capitol Hill — negotiations dragged Wednesday, dimming hopes for a swift breakthrough.Republican Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, a Trump ally who has been involved in the talks, said the president "is very firm in his resolve that we need to secure our border." He told CNN, "If they believe that this president is going to yield on this particular issue, they're misreading him."The impasse over government funding began last week, when the Senate approved a bipartisan deal keeping government open into February. That bill provided .3 billion for border security projects but not money for the wall. State highway workers were sent to the area Monday to erect "no parking" signs along U.S. 70 outside the monument.Trump has claimed federal workers are behind him in the shutdown fight, saying many told him, "stay out until you get the funding for the wall.'" He didn't say who told him that. (KGTV) — Firefighters made short work of a fire that tore through a Vista home and set nearby vegetation ablaze Saturday evening.Vista Fire Department responded to reports of a fire in the area of Robelini Drive and El Valle Opulento just before 7 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find a brush fire extending into a home at 110 El Valle Opulento.As firefighters battled back the brush fire, other fire crews tackled flames shooting our of the home. Firefighters say that because of the "rapidly deteriorating conditions inside the home," crews were forced to get out of the home and fire the fire from outside.The fire was fully extinguished within about an hour, VFD said. One person was displaced from the home. No injuries were reported. It's not clear how the fire began. The fire is currently under investigation.Firefighters reminded homeowners to have working smoke alarms in their home and clear vegetation away from any structure. 957

(KGTV) -- The Vista Unified School District announced Tuesday that its secondary schools would be pivoting back to virtual learning until the end of winter break.The decision only applies to district middle and high schools; students will have to finish the next three weeks of instruction virtually.Vista's elementary schools will continue with in-person learning.According to the latest community update on the district's website, the reason for the pause in in-person learning is based on the recent increase in the spread of COVID-19 "globally, nationally, regionally and locally."It goes on to say, "While Vista Unified has seen no evidence of the virus spreading within the school environment after 26 days of instruction in the Vista Classic learning model, the impact of the virus within our community is causing staffing challenges for teachers, instructional assistants, custodians, and other employees."The school board has a meeting scheduled for Dec. 15 to revisit the situation and discuss possible adjustments for the second half of the school year. 1086

(CNS) - Police reached out to the public Friday for help in finding a 75-year-old Oceanside man who went missing from Vista.Edgar Cruz, an Oceanside resident, was last seen on Thursday at an undisclosed location in Vista, according to Oceanside police.Cruz is described as Latino, 5-foot-9 and weighing about 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a hat, a dark green shirt and blue jeans.
