Officials with Operation Warp Speed confirmed Wednesday that they remain on track in their goal to distribute 20 million initial doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of the month.Health and Human Services Sec. Should the panel vote in favor of the recommendation, it would keep the Moderna vaccine on track for authorization by next week.In a report released Tuesday, the FDA reaffirmed Moderna's safety and efficacy statistics that were published following the conclusion of the drug's Phase III trial. Slaoui also said that a vaccine candidate produced by Johnson & Johnson is slated to fill its Phase III trials by tomorrow, and that initial efficacy data for that drug would be available by early January. He added that initial results of a vaccine candidate produced by AstraZeneca could be available later in January.Azar also said Wednesday that though supplies remain limited, there are still some therapeutic drugs, like antibody treatments, available for high-risk COVID-19 in some areas. One person has died and 16 others have become ill from a salmonella outbreak linked to kosher chicken, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.Eight people have been hospitalized, including the person who died.Illnesses were reported in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The death was reported in New York.According to the CDC, the agency began an outbreak investigation in June after several cases were reported in New York among people who said they had consumed kosher chicken."In interviews, ill people reported eating kosher chicken, and when asked about the specific brand eaten, several people reported Empire Kosher brand. The outbreak strain was also identified in samples of raw chicken collected from two facilities, including one facility that processes Empire Kosher brand chicken," the CDC said in its announcement.However, the agency is not telling consumers to avoid eating kosher chicken or Empire brand chicken. Rather, they should follow safe food preparation practices including washing hands before and after touching raw chicken and washing utensils, cutting boards and counters where raw chicken was prepared.Consumers should also cook chicken thoroughly, making sure the inside temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the temperature recommended to kill germs that cause illness such as salmonella.Salmonella illness usually begins between 12 and 72 hours after consuming the bacteria. Symptoms can include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps and can last four to seven days.The earliest illness linked to this outbreak began September 25, and the most recent case began June 4.Severe illness may require hospitalization and treatment with antibiotics. Those most at risk for severe illness and complications are children younger than 5 and adults over 65, as well as people with compromised immune systems.The youngest patient in this outbreak is younger than 1 year old, and the oldest is 76.The US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert "out of an abundance of caution," the agency said."FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to properly handle, prepare, and cook these raw chicken products."The CDC and the USDA are working with state health officials on the investigation.Kosher food is prepared under supervision to ensure that the dietary laws followed by observant Jews are adhered to. Oakland County Sheriff's deputies say an 11-year-old allegedly stole a rental car from a Pontiac, Michigan resident.Deputies responded to a report of a stolen vehicle as the caller said they may have left the keys in the ignition before the car went missing.An hour later, the victim called 911 to report that he observed a subject driving the rental car and had blocked it from moving in a parking space in an apartment complex. He told deputies that the suspect had fled from the stolen vehicle prior to their arrival.Deputies checked the area and located the suspect hiding near a railroad overpass. The suspect fled on foot and was apprehended by deputies and taken into custody.There was damaged observed on the rental car, police say.  759

(KGTV) - A message threatening African-Americans was found in a men’s bathroom at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, college police said Friday.The discovery was made Thursday afternoon in a stall of the restroom on the second floor of the Oceanside campus library, according to police. The exact nature of the threat was not released.College Police, Oceanside Police and the FBI received the report of a hate crime, officials said. The subject of the crime is unknown.Police are asking for anyone with information to call 760-795-6640. Officials confirmed several people were injured after an explosion at a business in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. The explosion reportedly took place around 7:30 a.m. Thursday at Smelter Corporation in the 300 block of Arrow Mines Road.Multiple people were injured. One victim was reportedly in critical condition.The business is known as an aluminum recycling plant.Details on the explosion had not yet been released.
