BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) to "continue carrying out its functions of political consultation, democratic supervision, and participation and raising proposals in governance, in a practical and effective way."     The CPPCC should make new contribution to boosting the Reform, Opening-up and Socialist Modernization Drive and the great cause of a peaceful reunification of the Nation, and safeguarding world peace and promoting a common development, said Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at Sunday's gathering here to mark the 60th founding anniversary of the country's political advisory body.     Other Party and State leaders present at the commemorative event were Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang. The gathering was presided over by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.     In his key-note speech, Hu described the CPPCC as a patriotic United Front of the Chinese people, a major institution of the multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC, and a main form to display socialist democracy in the country's political life. PHOENIX, United States, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Sunday praised the fast growing regional cooperation between China and the southwestern U.S. state of Arizona as he started his U.S. tour here.     Regional cooperation, as an important part of relations between nations, has served to enhance bilateral links, Wu said while meeting with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer Sunday evening.     "Recent years have witnessed rapid growth in the mutually beneficial cooperation and friendly exchanges between Arizona and China," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress. "China is now the fastest-growing export market for Arizona."     Their extensive exchanges in the fields of culture, education, science and technology have made an important contribution to the growth of China-U.S. ties, Wu said. PYONGYANG, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on Monday attended a grand celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations and the closing ceremony of the China-DPRK Friendship Year.     In a speech delivered at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, Premier Wen said China and the DPRK have understood, supported and helped each other during the past 60 years despite changes in the international situation.     The ruling parties and peoples of China and the DPRK have steadily promoted the development of the bilateral ties, contributing to regional peace and stability, Wen said.     This year marks the China-DPRK Friendship Year, featuring a variety of celebrations and events of exchanges, which have enhanced the friendship between the two countries, strengthened cooperation in various fields and injected new vitality into the bilateral ties, Wen said.     Currently, China-DPRK relations have arrived at a new historic point, he said.     China is ready to join hands with the DPRK to further consolidate and develop the traditional friendship, expand friendly exchanges and cooperation to better serve the well-being of both peoples, and make greater contribution to regional peace and stability, he noted.     DPRK Premier Kim Yong Il, who also attended the event, said the establishment of DPRK-China relations 60 years ago was an epoch-making event and the DPRK is firmly determined to consolidate and develop the DPRK-China friendship.     The events marking the China-DPRK Friendship Year have effectively promoted the friendship and trust between the two peoples, he said.     The DPRK is ready to make joint efforts with China to further the friendly, cooperative relations, he said.     During the celebration, the leaders watched the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" presented by DPRK artists.  

HAIKOU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of two people were retrieved in south China's island province of Hainan on Monday, bringing the death toll from the tropical storm Goni to five, local officials said.     The fourth was a fisherman who was killed when the fishing boat "Qiongdanzhou 00301" was wrecked at the Yangpu Port, while the fifth one, a fisherwoman, died after "Qiongdanzhou 52153" sank near Danzhou City, officials said.     Another two fishermen on "Qiongdanzhou 00301" and "Qiongdanzhou 00878", as well as four crew members on a Cambodian vessel are still missing, said an official with the Hainan marine search and rescue center.     The difficulty of rescue has increased as the provincial meteorologic center warned of continuous thunderstorms in northwestern Hainan in the following 24 hours, he said.     More than 1.6 million people in Hainan Province were affected by Goni, which forced local authorities to relocate 92,000, officials said.     It toppled more than 575 houses and damaged 2,311, as well as inundated 68,000 hectares of cropland, he said.     Goni landed in Hainan Wednesday and left China at 5 p.m. Sunday.
