(AP) — California's DMV is trying to improve customer service by accepting credit cards, upgrading its website and offering clearer instructions on how to obtain a new federally mandated ID, but Gov. Gavin Newsom cautioned Tuesday the agency's long wait times and other troubles aren't over."This is going to take a few years. Next year will be tough," Newsom said, referencing an expected surge in people using the Department of Motor Vehicles next year to acquire new IDs that will be required for air travel.Newsom spoke as he released a report detailing efforts the DMV is making to improve services after wait times averaged two hours last summer, prompting outrage from lawmakers and customers. The state hired the high-powered firm McKinsey & Company to recommend improvements, with the funding coming out of roughly 0 million in new money the DMV got in this year's state budget.Newsom also announced he's appointed Steve Gordon as the agency's director. Gordon is a longtime employee of the private sector, working for Cisco Systems and most recently for zTransforms, a consulting company focused on business-wide process improvement. He is not registered in a political party and will make 6,000. The state Senate must approve his appointment.The DMV has been plagued by slow-downs related to the state's "motor voter" registration program and an uptick in people applying for REAL IDs, the new federal IDs that will be required for airplane travel starting in October 2020. More than 28 million Californians may seek a REAL ID.Beyond hiring McKinsey, the state has brought in a public relations firm to create a statewide awareness campaign about the new IDs and a consulting firm to think about what DMV offices should look like. The report did not say how much each is being paid.Other changes include the planned acceptance of credit cards, which will start at a Davis office in September before expanding to Fresno, Victorville and Roseville. The state hopes to eventually accept credit cards statewide. The DMV has also started launching REAL ID "pop ups" at businesses and plans to open 100 kiosks in August, where people can do routine transactions such as renewing vehicle registration without going to a customer service window.The goal, Newsom said, is to improve through small changes. "We're not going big at first — we want to go small and build on successes," he said.The department plans to hire between 1,800 and 1,900 new workers, most of them temporary, through next year. Newsom's announcement comes a day before the DMV plans to close offices statewide for half a day for a day of training for its more than 5,000 employees.Republican lawmakers were divided on the Democratic governor's actions. Republican Assemblyman Jim Patterson of Fresno faulted Newsom for "making excuses" for the DMV rather than re-imagining it and criticized him for saying wait times could be long again next summer. But GOP Sen. She sent the following statement to 10News:“My district is a hub for all things that involve outdoor recreation — biking, walking, jogging, skateboarding — you name it and my constituents enjoy doing it throughout our beautiful district. SB 127 is a major move forward in identifying and funding important bike and pedestrian paths to connect people with the places they want to go. In addition, it will bring us an important step further on ensuring highway overpasses in my district have the bike and walking facilities they need to connect inland communities to the coast. This is important for safe routes to schools for our kids as well as folks accessing our stunning beaches.”Members of the San Diego Bicycle Coalition support the bill, saying it will make it easier for people to commute to and from work. They also say it will help fund more "active transportation" projects."The funding is always an issue," says SDBC Advocacy Coordinator Jennifer Hunt. "This is a great way to get that extra, additional funding and just to get more people out safely using biking and walking."The bill has passed the State Senate and is now in the Assembly. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Parents of Californians murdered by people now on death row shared gruesome details of their loved ones' killings Thursday as they launched a statewide tour to urge Gov. Gavin Newsom to reverse his moratorium on executions."He was like a thief in the night that stole justice from us," said Phyllis Loya, whose son Larry Lasater Jr. was killed on duty as a police officer.Newsom last month issued a reprieve to the more than 700 people sitting on California's death row, meaning none will be executed as long as he is in office. He also ordered the state to withdraw its lethal injection regulations and dismantled the "death chamber" at San Quentin State Prison.California's death row is the nation's largest, but the state has not executed anyone since 2006. Voters in 2016 approved a ballot measure to speed up executions, and district attorneys and the families of victims' accused Newsom of defying the voters' will.RELATED: California seeks death penalty in 'Golden State Killer' caseTodd Spitzer, Orange County's district attorney, said the "Victims of Murder Justice" tour will travel to all 80 Assembly and 40 Senate districts. He did not announce new legal actions aimed at stopping Newsom's moratorium. But Spitzer requested that Newsom review each case individually to make clemency decisions rather than issuing a blanket reprieve. Luis Bracamontes was convicted last year for Oliver's murder and said during the trial he wished he had killed more cops. Oliver said Newsom owed her a one-on-one meeting to discuss the case."You turned the knife again in my heart," Oliver said. "I dare you to meet with me and I can give you some facts that you don't want to hear. I challenge you Gov. Newsom — come meet with me."When announcing his moratorium, Newsom said he met with several victims' families who offered different opinions on the death penalty."To the victims all I can say is we owe you, and we need to do more and do better," he said at the time. "But we cannot advance the death penalty in effort to try to soften the blow of what happened."National Crime Victims' Rights Week began Monday, and several attendees said Newsom should have spent it meeting with crime victims in California rather than traveling to El Salvador. (AP) -- California has surpassed 10,000 deaths from the coronavirus, making it the U.S. state with the third-highest number of deaths since the pandemic broke out earlier this year.The figure was reported Friday, with 10,024 dead since the coronavirus was detected in California in February.New York and New Jersey have the highest and second highest number of deaths in the U.S. at 32,000 and 16,000, respectively.The first known COVID-related death in the U.S. occurred in early February in the San Francisco Bay Area county of Santa Clara. 569
