ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai.The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain.The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters.The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight.The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Encinitas announced a timeline Monday for its leaf blower ordinance restrictions. The rule, which bans all gas-powered leaf blowers and restricts hours of use, was adopted by the Encinitas City Council on Aug. 21. The ordinance took effect for city operations on Sept. 20. By Dec. 20, all commercial operators will be required to comply with the rules. All others have until Jan. 20, 2020 to adhere to the restrictions. The new ordinance includes the following restrictions: Prohibits the use of all gas-powered leaf blowers citywide by January 20, 2020; Allows for the use of electric or battery-powered leaf blowers; Requires responsible use of blower equipment to control dust and noise; Leaf blowers of all types may only be used between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and between 12 noon and 5 p.m. on Sundays.Anyone who must purchase a new electric or battery-powered leaf blower can take part in a rebate program to partially subsidize the purchase. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Edward Long will spend 50 years to life in prison for the murder of Elizabeth Perez, whose body was found in a car along I-15. Her family called Monday's sentencing a welcome bit of justice and closure. "It's hard to understand what happened," says Angela Perez, Elizabeth's mother. "She did not deserve this. The fear she must have felt, it kills me."Long killed Perez on June 12, 2016. During sentencing, her family begged the judge for the maximum sentence, 50 years, which Long got."He should never be allowed to be free and walk with society," Elizabeth's Aunt, Lisa Perez. FAIRFIELD, Calif. -- The parents of 10 children rescued from what authorities call years-long abuse are both in jail after their mother was arrested Wednesday.Ina Rogers, 31, was charged with nine counts of felony child abuse. Prosecutors say she caused the children to be in a situation that was likely to produce great bodily injury and death.Her husband, Jonathan Allen, is facing charges that include torture and felony child abuse.
