SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido firefighter is being praised for a small act of kindness that impacted a 7-year-old in a big way.Last week the department was responding to palm trees on fire. That's when Craig Domingue, a fire engineer, noticed Eli walking with his mom. "We happened to be walking and spotted the fire truck. Eli kind of, his anxiety was kicking in," said Eli's mom, Monica Zamora. Eli is on the autism spectrum; loud noises and first responders give him anxiety. "I just went up to him and introduced myself and talked to him like I would talk to any person, and it was a really neat interaction," said Domingue.Domingue says he was able to recognize Eli was on the spectrum because his 10-year-old son is too. He was able to calm Eli down and thanked him for picking up trash."Eli at the time was out picking up trash, which is so neat that he's here doing something good for our community, just like all the other firefighters that are here doing good for the community," said Domingue. "We do go pick up trash a lot, but it's not often people acknowledge him and thank him for what he's doing," said Zamora. Zamora shared the positive interaction on Facebook, and over 1,000 people have reacted to the post. Many have since messaged Zamora, thanking Eli for all he does in the community. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An autopsy report for a San Diego State student who died after falling from his bed after a night of partying revealed elevated alcohol levels.The report from the county Medical Examiner found that Dylan Hernandez, 19, died of blunt force injuries of head and ruled his death an accident. At the time of the autopsy, a toxicology report said elevated alcohol levels of 0.06 percent and cannabinoids were found in his system. However, earlier reports from campus police said he had a 0.23 percent blood-alcohol level the morning he fell.Hernandez fell from his bunk bed in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2019, after a fraternity party that night. The family said they believed campus police were not pursuing certain angles, including a possible cover-up."The Hernandez family is concerned because witnesses they provided to SDSU and UPD still have not been questioned," George Kindley, the Hernandez family's lawyer, said.Hernandez's family claims SDSU Police never sought out warrants for Snapchat videos or phone records from members of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, the fraternity Hernandez was pledging to join. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A semi-truck carrying boxes of grapes caught fire as it traveled down Interstate 8 in El Cajon Monday morning.Authorities received reports of a semi-truck on fire on westbound I-8 just near dunbar lane shortly after 12:30 a.m.Firefighters arrived to put the fire out and attempted to save the shipments of grapes, but it was a total lost.California Highway Patrol officials said the truck’s driver escaped unharmed.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 487

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After months without any organized sports or youth activities, the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program resumed Monday under strict guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.For Addison Watson, it was a day she thought would never come. On Monday, she joined hundreds of other kids to take part in the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program.“I’ve been sitting in my room on a desk with my computer, staring at a screen. This is nice to be outside,” Addison said.When the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, there was a concern there wouldn’t be a program this summer.However, organizers pressed on and prepared just in case. Once the green light was given by San Diego County health officials, they had everything up and running.The program opened up with health measures in place, including having families do health screenings at home. Additionally, each participant and the entire staff will have to go through another health and temperature screening on site each day.Participants and staff are also required to wear masks and will have to follow social distancing guidelines. To help with distancing, the program will be spread out at more locations.The participants will also be broken up into smaller groups -- unlike before, they will stay within this group to keep the interaction to fewer people.Heather Rabe, program manager for the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program, said, “We're following an operational safety protocol plan that we've been developing and working on and adjusting as new guidelines have come out for the last two months.”10News was also told other agencies within the state and outside of California will use this similar model when it comes to their aquatic programs. 1735

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- All lanes of eastbound Interstate 8 have reopened after a three-vehicle crash caused four lanes of the interstate to be closed. The crash happened near the College Road off-ramp around 3:45 a.m. The California Highway Patrol gave few details on what exactly caused the crash.A driver of the SUV involved in the crash said another car drove the wrong way down the ramp and smashed into his vehicle. A third vehicle then crashed into the two others.Two people inside one of the vehicles were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.CHP says one of those inside the sedan at the time of the crash may have been thrown from the car. The man is also being investigated for possibly driving under the influence, according to CHP.The driver of the SUV was uninjured while the driver of the third vehicle is being investigated for driving under the influence. 898
