A detailed look at COVID-19 deaths in U.S. kids and young adults released Tuesday shows they mirror patterns seen in older patients.The report examined 121 deaths of those younger than 21, as of the end of July. Like older adults, many of them had one or more medical condition — like lung problems, including asthma, obesity, heart problems or developmental conditions.Deaths were also more common among those in certain racial and ethnic groups, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC found 54 were Hispanic, 35 were Black, and 17 were white, even though overall there are far more white Americans than Black and Hispanic.“It’s really pretty striking. It’s similar to what we see in adults,” and may reflect many things, including that many essential workers who have to go to work are Black and Hispanic parents, said Dr. Andrew Pavia, a pediatric infectious diseases expert at the University of Utah. He was not involved in the CDC study.The numbers of young deaths are small though. They represent about 0.08% of the total U.S. deaths reported to CDC at the time, though children and college-age adults make up 26% of the U.S. population.Fifteen of the deaths were tied to a rare condition called multisystem inflammatory syndrome, which can cause swelling and heart problems.The report also found nearly two-thirds of the deaths were in males, and that deaths increased with age. There were 71 deaths among those under 17, including a dozen infants. The remaining 50 deaths were ages 18 to 20.Scientists are still trying to understand why severe illnesses seem to become more common as children age. One theory is that young children have fewer sites on their airway surfaces that the coronavirus is able to attach to, Pavia said. Another is that children may be less prone to a dangerous overreaction by the immune system to the coronavirus, he added.Thus far this year, the COVID-19 toll in children is lower than the pediatric flu deaths reported to the CDC during a routine flu season, which has been about 130 in recent years. A lost Purple Heart award returned home on Wednesday. Tucson Police say one of their officers recovered a Purple Heart award from a local pawn store several months ago. But with the help of Purple Heart Reunited, they were able to track down the owner of the award and his family.The award belongs to Colonel Leon Elie Lyon. TPD held a ceremony today to return the Purple Heart to the family. Officer Jim Caccavale from TPD presented the Purple Heart to the recipient's grandson, Glen Lyon. There was also a representative from Purple Hearts Reunited. Lyon entered active duty on May 8, 1917 during World War I as an Engineer Officer. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in science in 1894. After one month serving in WWI, he was promoted to Major and 13 days after that, promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. During his service in France, Lyon was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He survived the war and was honorably discharged on Oct. 15th, 1919. He entered service again less than a year later and served until the early 1940's, making the rank of Colonel in 1942.Colonel Lyon married Emily Cornelia Knapp Lyon in 1907. She died young in 1938. The couple had one child, Oliver Day Lyon. Oliver served as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force and saw service in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. Colonel Leon E. Lyon passed away on Dec. 9, 1943. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.  1452

A federal judge in San Diego on Friday called the Trump administration's plan outlining how the US government intends to reunite migrant children who were separated from their families with parents who have been deported "very impressive."US officials will first work to determine parentage and resolve any safety concerns for the child and then seek to reunite families. The submitted plan said there are 365 separated children with parents outside the US in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services, but officials later corrected that number.Scott Stewart, deputy assistant attorney general, said during a 40-minute joint status call Friday afternoon among the judge, the government, the American Civil Liberties Union and other nongovernmental organizations assisting with reunifications of separated families that the government actually has 386 children in its custody whose parents were deported. A Land O' Lakes, Florida man who was just released from prison was arrested for attempted vehicle theft again before he even left the jail parking lot.Klaid Karpuzi, 41, was arrested when deputies say he tried to steal a truck with a teen in the backseat just three days earlier.As Karpuzi was walking through the jail parking lot following his release, he reportedly tried to get into a vehicle by walking around it, then pulling on the passenger door handle.Inside the vehicle was an off-duty deputy who happened to be at the jail to take a class.When Karpuzi pulled on the handle, Deputy Brunner stepped out of the vehicle, where she and another deputy detained him.Karpuzi told the deputies he saw a vehicle with the engine running and did not realize anyone was in it.He was arrested for attempted auto theft and returned to the jail. A man shot several times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin is still fighting for his life while undergoing surgical procedures. Bullets severed Jacob Blake Jr.’s spinal cord and shattered at least one vertebrae and he is paralyzed from the waist down. According to his attorney Benjamin Crump “it will take a miracle” for Blake to walk again.Blake was shot at least seven times by Kenosha, Wisconsin police just after 5 p.m. Sunday. Officers were responding to the area for a reported "domestic incident."Officers did not say what led up to the shooting, but video shot by a neighbor shows Blake walking to an SUV and attempting to enter it moments before an officer grabs him by the shirt and shoots him.Blake’s three young boys were in the car at the time. His family says Blake’s eight-year-old son was celebrating his birthday over the weekend. “Think of that son, and what he will be thinking about every time he celebrates his birthday,” Crump said.“They shot my son, seven times, seven times. Like he didn’t matter. He matters. He’s a human being, and he matters,” said Blake’s father, Jacob Blake Sr., becoming emotional Tuesday afternoon.Blake is conscious and was able to talk to his mother when she visited him in the hospital.“I don’t think he knows about all this, he doesn’t know what happened. He opened his eyes and started to cry. He started to apologize,” I asked him why, and he didn’t know what happened.As she started to pray, Blake asked the officer in the room if he was a man of faith, “he said yes, in short, and he (Blake) asked him to pray with us,” Jackson recalled from visiting her son in the hospital.Blake has holes in his stomach from the bullets, and has damage to other internal organs and his arm. His family and attorneys say he has a “long road to recovery” and more surgeries ahead. The family said they are not sure if Blake’s paralysis is permanent.“I am asking everyone, take a moment and examine your heart. Citizens, police officers, firemen, clergy, politicians. Do Jacob justice on this level, and examine your hearts. We need healing,” Blake’s mother, Julia Jackson said.“God did not make one type of tree,” she said, “how dare you ask him to make one type of human that looks just like you. I’m not talking to just caucasian people, I’m talking to everyone. No one is superior to another.”Jackson called for everyone to work together to show the world how humans are supposed to treat each other. “America is great when we behave greatly.”Attorney Crump and co-counsel will bring a civil lawsuit to hold those responsible accountable and to help get Blake and his family resources for his recovery. Blake’s family is represented by Attorney Crump, along with co-counsels Attorney Patrick Salvi and Attorney B’Ivory LaMarr, who call the incident “brutal excessive force.”The attorneys are asking for transparency from the police investigating the incident. They are calling for any available dashcam video and statements from witnesses about what led to the shooting.Protests in Blake's honor happened across the country Monday night, including in Portland, San Diego, New York, Minneapolis, and Denver.Police declared a riot in Portland after fires were set outside of the offices of the police association. In San Diego, at least three protesters were arrested.Locally, anger over Blake's shooting spilled into the streets of Kenosha for a second night Monday. Police again fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters who defied a curfew, threw bottles and shot fireworks at law enforcement guarding the courthouse.Wisconsin Democratic Gov.
