BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with the foreign guests attending the 2008 Annual General Meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on how China could properly handle the relation between stable, fast economic growth and environmental protection, and achieve sustainable development, against the backdrop of the aggravating global financial crisis and the downturn of global growth. BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's premium revenue is expected to hit one trillion yuan (146.3 billion U.S. dollars) this year due to strengthened promotion and increasing demand, said a senior official here on Sunday.     The premium revenue grew at an annual rate of 30 percent from 460 million yuan in 1980, when insurance business began to enter into full swing in China, to hit 703.58 billion yuan in 2007, said vice chairman of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) Zhou Yanli at the opening ceremony of an insurance exhibition.     The revenue in the first eight months this year rose 52.24 percent year on year to 713.40 billion yuan which exceeded the total of last year, he said.     The revenue for the whole year is likely to break one trillion yuan at the current pace, he predicted.     The development of China's insurance business had been halted for 20 years after the founding of the new China in 1949. After the opening up and reform initiated in 1979, the sector was on the way to the right track and entered into full swing.     The value of the industry assets totaled more than three trillion yuan, which is owned by more than 110 insurers, according to Zhou.     Despite of the progress, insiders noted the revenue growth is poised to slow down in the fourth quarter of 2008 and the first half of 2009 as insurers are expected to retain dividends to protect its profit margin which was hurt by stock investment returns slumps. That is likely to discourage the future premium growth.     China Life, the nation's largest life insurer, saw premium jump52.9 percent from a year ago to 23.44 billion yuan in September, much slower than the 93.7 percent growth in August. The combined revenue in the first nine months totaled 248.6 billion yuan, up 56.7 percent year on year, comparing with the 57.14 percent growth in August.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The State Grid Corp. of China (SGCC), the country's biggest power supplier, said Sunday that its 2008 net profit fell almost 80 percent year on year due to natural disasters and higher power prices.     Net profit was 9.66 billion yuan (1.4 billion U.S. dollars), compared with 47.1 billion yuan in 2007.     Revenue rose 13.8 percent to 1.156 trillion yuan from a year earlier, the state-owned company noted.     The power distributor suffered more than 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) of direct economic loss in the worst winter weather in at least 50 years in southern China and the May 12 earthquake.     China raised the on-grid power price by 0.017 yuan per kwh in June and 0.02 yuan kwh in August to around 0.3 yuan per kwh on average to offset rising costs in power plants. But retail household power prices were capped amid concerns of a higher inflation.     The company said it planned to invest 83 billion yuan (12 billion U.S. dollars) in ultra-high voltage (UHV) power lines in 2009 and 2010 to make long-distance transmission more efficient.     China's power demand and installed power generating capacity would likely double to 7.4 trillion kwh and 1.47 billion kw respectively in 2020, it forecasted.

CHENGDU, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- More than one million migrant workers, who were forced to return home late last year amid the impact of the global financial crisis, have found new jobs in southwest China's Sichuan Province.     Out of the 1.49 million migrant workers who had returned home, 1.03 million have found new jobs through training and job fairs organized by the government, according to the provincial labor and social security department.     About 38 percent of them engage in farming and breeding, 43 percent work in the towns and the rest leave home again and find their new jobs in other provinces.     So far, Sichuan has provided 5,000 training classes to 250,000 migrant workers. It also organized 53 job fairs specifically for the migrant workers, helping some 100,000 find new jobs.     The province is expected to invest 80 million yuan (11.7 million yuan) this year on migrant workers training, up 77.8 percent year on year.
