BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday called on Japan to make substantial efforts to create appropriate conditions for improvement of bilateral ties ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Yokohama.At a routine news briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei confirmed that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao exchanged greetings with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan prior to the start of the East Asian Summit last Saturday.Hong said China attached great importance to developing ties with Japan.Developing China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations was in the fundamental interests of both nations and their people, Hong said.China stands for resolving the problems between the two countries through dialogue and consultation on the basis of the principles of the four political documents, he said, adding China's position in this regard remained unchanged.The four political documents, namely the China-Japan joint statement on comprehensively advancing strategic and reciprocal relations, the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship and the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration, serve as the bedrock for developing friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.In reply to a question on the sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands, Hong reaffirmed that the Diaoyu Islands and its adjacent islets have been an integral part of the Chinese territory since ancient times.China-Japan relations have been strained since a collision between two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler on Sept. 7 in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.The Japanese Coast Guard seized the trawler and detained the fishermen and the captain on Sept. 8.China, which claims sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands, has maintained the seizure and detention were illegal.

ISTANBUL, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's four-nation Eurasian tour has scored marked achievements and further deepened China-Europe cooperation, said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who described the visit as "a great complete success."Wen paid official visits to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey and attended the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-EU summit in the eight days from Oct. 2-9.Yang said Premier Wen's visit is aimed at boosting mutual trust through dialogues and promoting common development through cooperation.During his eight-day visit, Wen took part in more than 70 meetings, events and activities and paid a brief visit to Berlin as a guest of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the midst of his stay in Brussels.In addition to talking with leaders of the four countries and the European Union (EU), Wen also met with people from the local cultural, industrial and business circles and held joint press conferences or issued joint statements together with the leaders of the countries.Premier Wen vividly presented China's policies and positions, trying different angles, Yang said, which had further improved bilateral relations between China and the four countries and deepened China-Europe ties in the new historic period.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China expected an early resumption of the six-party talks to ease tensions and resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday.All parties should make joint efforts to ease tensions between the south and the north on the peninsula and strive to resume the six-party talks at an early date, said Wen while meeting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on the sidelines of the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels."This is in the fundamental interests of all parties involved and is conducive to peace and stability in the region," he said.The six-party talks, a multilateral mechanism designed to peacefully denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, were launched in 2003. The talks involve China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.Speaking of the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) Seoul Summit, slated for Nov. 11-12, Wen said it was of great significance for boosting the world economic recovery, adding that China would support South Korea in seeking positive outcomes at the meeting.Wen said China regards South Korea as a friendly neighbor and an important partner. BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese companies' overseas investment rose 10.4 percent year on year in the first nine months even as global investment as a whole dropped sharply over the period, a senior Chinese official said Tuesday.Chinese companies invested 36.3 billion U.S. dollars overseas in the first three quarters, excluding investments in financial sectors, as other other companies, hit by the global downturn, reduced overseas investment, Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planning agency, said at the opening of the 2nd China Overseas Investment Fair in Beijing.China has emerged as a major source of foreign direct investment (FDI) outflows.Although global FDI outflows dropped 40 percent year on year in 2009, China's overseas investments rose 14.2 percent year on year to 47.8 billion U.S. dollars, said Zhang.By the end of 2009, more than 12,000 Chinese firms had set up 13,000 overseas enterprises in 170 countries and regions, he said.The National Development and Reform Commission approved the two-day Second China Overseas Investment Fair, which the China Industrial Overseas Development and Planning Association (CIODPA) and China Development Bank are co-hosting.Representatives of government, multinational companies, international organizations and financial institutions from more than 120 countries gathered at the trade fair to persuade Chinese investors to invest overseas.
