Health officials say the U.S. faces an uphill battle in convincing some Americans to take a potential COVID-19 vaccine. While polling shows Americans have been more open to a vaccine in recent months, there is still skepticism in vaccines among non-whites across the country.Experts say that Black people, in particular, remain skeptical of vaccines due to past failings of the U.S. healthcare system, in particular, the Tuskegee syphilis study. But the National Medical Association — a nonprofit representing the interests of Black doctors across the country — is trying to fight that skepticism ahead of the potential authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine."We're already suffering more than other community, and we would hate to see that suffering gap widen because members of our community did not affect to receive a vaccine that could have prevented kidney disease, prevented lung damage from COVID-19," Dr. Leon McDougle, the president of the National Medical Association said. The National Medical Association's task force has been doing its own independent vetting of potential COVID-19 vaccines, and McDougle added they are doing so to ensure that politicians are not influencing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."We are trusted messengers for health in the Black community," McDougle said. "That's where we live. That's where we work, and we already have those established relationships."The group has already had two meetings with Pfizer — the company, who on Wednesday, said it is days away from filing for Emergency Use Authorization for its vaccine candidate — and has a third meeting planned. The Association has also met with Moderna and AstraZeneca about their vaccine trials.McDougle added that since the group has been having meetings with vaccine makers for a while, he's hopeful the Association will agree with the FDA's decisions.McDougle says the National Medical Association has already been collaborating with clergy and other professional organizations that are looking to them for a direction on the vaccine. 2045

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A Tampa strip club is suing a child sex trafficking victim — the latest development in a court battle involving the club where the victim says she was trafficked. Now the victim's mother is speaking out for the first time.Scores Gentleman's Club filed a countersuit in mid-July against the child sex trafficking victim, referred to in court documents as Jane Doe. The strip club's response comes six months after Jane Doe sued the business, accusing the club of hiring and exploiting her when she was 17 years old.The victim's mother, who was granted anonymity to protect her daughter's identity, says she's shocked the club took legal action against her daughter."I was disgusted and saddened, and I still can't believe it," the victim's mother said. The victim's lawsuit, filed in January, accuses the club of exploiting a minor with mental disabilities, stating she "was repeatedly touched, groped, molested and propositioned to engage in prostitution with explicit sex acts being proposed.""She was dancing, to her recollection of 15 to 30 minutes of her being hired there," the victim's mother said. "There are things she's experienced that she will never get over she has bad dreams, she has PTSD, she can't sleep at night."Luke Lirot, the attorney for Score's Gentlemen's Club, defended his decision to countersue Jane Doe for damages."She was absolutely competent enough to trick the people that work at my client's club," Lirot said.In the countersuit, the club says Jane Doe tricked them into hiring her by using a fake ID. It states she had "...full knowledge that the presentation of a fake ID was fraudulent and untrue, thus making an intentional misrepresentation."Lirot said the countersuit is the only way to get to the truth."To find this out sufficiently and to hold the people responsible that had deceived my clients, this was the only option I had," Lirot said.Jane Doe's attorney Michael Dolce said he plans to file a motion to dismiss the countersuit in Hillsborough County Court."You cannot legally blame a child abuse victim for their own abuse," Dolce said.Dolce filed the original case against the club. It states Jane Doe was brought to the club in 2017 by Robert Torres.According to court documents, employees at the club introduced her to drugs and alcohol. Police later arrested Torres for trafficking and he pled guilty to lesser charges in the case.Scores is also suing Torres for intentional misrepresentation. As for the victim, her mother says she's still in therapy. This story was originally published by Jackie Callaway on WFTS in Tampa, Florida. 2618

GOLETA, Calif. (KGTV) - A rare sea creature that’s not supposed to live in the Northern Hemisphere surprised scientists by washing ashore in Goleta last week. The Mola tecta, more commonly known as the hoodwinker sunfish, is a rare species first identified in 2017, according to experts at University of California, Santa Barbara. UCSB reported the fish at Sands Beach in the university's Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve, the Associated Press reported. An intern alerted a reserve staffer who initially thought it was a type of local sunfish. “This is certainly the most remarkable organism I have seen wash up on the beach in my four years at the reserve,” said Jessica Nielsen, a conservation specialist at Coal Oil Point on the UCSB website. “It really was exciting to collect the photos and samples knowing that it could potentially be such an extraordinary sighting.” Scientists have not yet determine how the fish died. 932

Hours after Amazon instructed its employees to remove the short-video sharing app TikTok from their devices -- the company back stepped. The online retail giant says the email was sent in error and there is no change to amazon's policy regarding TikTok.In the email sent to employees Friday morning and obtained by CNN, Amazon said that due to "security risks, the TikTok app is no longer permitted on mobile devices that can access Amazon email."A TikTok spokesperson said Amazon "did not communicate to us before sending their email, and we still do not understand their concerns."Politicians say the app could undermine national security given its ties to China.Cybersecurity experts have been more cautious about that assessment.TikTok is owned by the world's most valuable startup, a Chinese company named Bytedance. 828
