Kroger is requesting customers no longer openly carry firearms into its stores, even in states where open carry is legal, the company announced Tuesday evening. The announcement comes just hours after Walmart made a similar announcement. Walmart also said it would end the sales of some firearms and ammunition. Kroger stopped selling guns last year.Kroger, like Walmart, also said it would add its voice to the growing number of corporations calling on elected officials to pass gun reform laws, such as requiring stronger background checks."Kroger has demonstrated with our actions that we recognize the growing chorus of Americans who are no longer comfortable with the status quo and who are advocating for concrete and common sense gun reforms," the company said in a statement. As mass shootings have grown in frequency, death toll and prominence in recent years, many big companies have faced pressure to address their role in the crisis. After a shooter in Parkland, Florida, killed 17 people last year, Dick's Sporting Goods announced it would stop selling assault-style rifles. At the same time, Walmart raised the age for gun purchases from 18 to 21. Kroger followed suit, ending all sales of guns and ammunition in its 45 Fred Meyer stores in the Pacific Northwest last March, citing declining consumer demand for firearms. The grocer had earlier stopped selling guns to people under 21 and pulled sales of magazines featuring "assault rifles."Over the last month, Walmart in particular has faced pressure to stop selling guns after 22 people were shot and killed by a white supremacist inside a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. In its statement, Kroger said it would be "respectfully asking" that customers no longer openly carry guns in its stores, except for authorized law enforcement officers. It is unclear whether or how the grocer plans to enforce this request.Walmart said it will take a "non confrontational" approach to enforcing the new policy by putting up signs announcing the request outside of stores.Ed Scruggs, president of gun safety advocacy group Texas Gun Sense, said a number of retailers in the state (where open carry is legal) request that customers not openly carry in their stores by posting large signs stating the policy in English and Spanish outside their stores. Store workers can ask customers who do not abide by the signs to return the guns to their cars or leave the store, Scruggs said. 2444

INDIANAPOLIS — A fatal crash over the weekend is now a homicide after an autopsy uncovered a gunshot wound to the victim's head. Indiana State Police first responded to the two-vehicle crash on I-70 near the 96 mile marker around 7:23 p.m. Saturday. The victim, 27-year-old Devon Anderson, was found unresponsive inside one of the vehicles and pronounced dead at the scene. Anderson's injuries were believed to have been from the collision, state police said. The second driver, 24-year-old Juan Garrado Vivas, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. During the autopsy that week, the Marion County Coroner's office's recovered a bullet from inside Anderson's head, which was determined to be his cause of death. The new information led Indiana State Police to begin a criminal investigation into Anderson's death. Detectives believe Vivas fired a shot from a handgun while driving on the interstate and struck Anderson in the head. Anderson's vehicle then crossed into the path of Vivas' vehicle causing a crash. Vivas was arrested on September 25. He's currently facing a charge of murder in connection with Anderson's death. The incident remains under investigation. 1204

It's a bird! It's a rabbit! No, it's definitely a bird. But hey, you be the judge.A video of a black animal getting a nice scratch is spreading quickly around the internet as people take sides in yet another great debate.Daniel Quintana, a scientist at the University of Oslo in Norway, is responsible for all this -- he found the video on an image-sharing website on Sunday and tweeted it, saying, "Rabbits love getting stroked on their nose."You see it, right?Since then, it's blown up -- all because Quintana played on a famous optical illusion wherein a rabbit looks like a bird, and a bird looks like a rabbit. His video alone has been viewed millions of times. But here's the thing: CNN has in fact verified that not only does the video show a bird, it's specifically an African White-necked Raven named Mischief. He belongs to the 847

It is a joyous time for Virginia junior guard Kyle Guy. Not only is Guy getting to participate in this weekend's Final Four, Guy is engaged to get married. But it turns out one joyous occasion is playing havoc with another one. Guy and his fiancee removed their wedding registry after a link to their registry became public. According to the Washington Post, Guy said he was told that having a wedding registry would affect Guy's college eligibility. So no wedding registry, at least not yet. “Yeah, that was crazy to me that that’s illegal because that’s what a registry’s for,” Guy told the media on Thursday. “Yeah, NCAA said it was illegal, so I’m not going to argue with it right now. I’m going to try to win a national championship, and we’ll open that book.”Apparently Guy had launched the registry -- no word on where they're registered -- which became public knowledge through the Busted Coverage sports blog, the Post reported. The blog's founder then received a cease and desist letter from the university claiming that sharing the registry link could cause Guy to lose his eligibility. That's when Guy and his fiancee removed the registry. But NCAA President Mark Emmert said a registry is permissible as long as it is private. "Nobody in the NCAA said anything of the sort," Emmert told USA Today. "We don't know what the source of that information was. ... It's certainly not the case that it's a violation of NCAA rules." A university spokesperson told the USA Today that the university does not "desire to interrupt typical gift giving practices." 1575
