SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many doctors across San Diego County have seen a recent surge in positive COVID-19 cases. Five hundred one new cases were reported Thursday.But, most people don’t require hospitalization and can isolate at home.“We just do video visits with patients and talk to them about their symptoms,” said Dr. Michele Ritter, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego Health and an associate professor of medicine.“At the end of April, May, we were getting maybe four or five new referrals a day to be seen, and then it went up to about 40 a day.”Ritter is also the medical director of the COVID-19 clinic. She said many of her patients live with other people.“There are times there are three of four generations of a family living in a house together and sometimes very close quarters, so that’s a challenge,” she explained.If someone in your household has COVID-19 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends they stay in a separate room and use a different bathroom if possible, avoid contact with other members of the household and pets, don’t share personal household items, and wear a cloth face covering when around others“The absolute ideal situation is your own room, your own bathroom. Not everybody has that, we have patients who live in two-bedroom apartments with six other people and a single bathroom.,” said Ritter.While isolation is critical, Ritter said if you must use a shared space, like a bathroom, it’s essential to disinfect after every use. That includes using a shower, toilet, or sink.“When you’re done if you’re able to have something like a Clorox wipe, or a washcloth with some Clorox bleach on it wipe down the surfaces that you’ve used and wash your hands,” she said. “In terms of laundering clothing, it’s probably fine to launder them together if you’re using high temperatures to wash your clothes.”She said to wash all dishes and utensils used by someone with COVID-19 in hot water and soap or run them through a dishwasher.“A lot of patients have their family members bring meals to them and set it outside their door so they can eat,” she said.Another challenge is parents who test positive for COVID-19 and have mild symptoms, but still, have to take care of their kids.“I find that most parents do well wearing a mask; the kids get used to it,” she said. “You can still be around your kids; just do the best you can.”Ritter said many of her patients have been able to keep the virus from spreading to their loved ones at home by following simple steps.“Wearing masks, washing hands, cleaning frequently touched surfaces is the best you can do,” she said. “We don’t always have perfect situations, so we do the best we can with what we have.” 2720

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just ahead of this holiday week, San Diego's Cross Border Xpress (CBX) unveiled new biometric facial comparison technology. The CEO of the sky bridge that connects travelers directly to the Tijuana International Airport told ABC 10News that it will further secure and streamline travel into the United States.The U.S.-Mexico border is still closed to non-essential travel because of COVID-19. CBX CEO Jorge Goytortua said CBX is still not encouraging people to travel right now but if they do, they can take advantage of this technology.“Within seconds, the technology will recognize the passenger in a [Customs and Border Protection (CBP)] database,” said Goytortua. He told ABC 10News that the comparison process happens only at a time and place where travelers are already required by law to verify their identity by presenting travel documents. Goytortua says that when a traveler arrives at the CBP processing area, he or she will have a photo taken at the primary inspection point. A CBP officer will do a review by retrieving the traveler's passport or visa photo from government holdings. The new photo will be compared to the previously collected photo.“It's going to be a hands-free process. It's going to be a much faster process,” he told ABC 10News.He added that CBX does not have access to the photos. Only CBP officers can see them. If travelers are still concerned about privacy, he said it's not mandatory to use the technology. “You can ask the officer if you don’t want to be processed like that then you will be processed the traditional way with your document read it on the scan. A CBP officer [will] research on their system and make sure that the person that is presenting the document is the one there in front of the officer,” he stated. 1790
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was a chilly dilemma for a Pacific Beach restaurant: outdoor dining this winter without any patio heaters.The owners changed their outlook by appealing to their customers for help.After shutting down several times since the pandemic began, Break Point restaurant and bar, reopened in September. With the purple tier restrictions putting a halt to indoor dining, the owners turned to their new parklet to host their outdoor dining. But they had a problem."Keeping customers warm is a concern," said co-owner Amy Lee.Lee says when the winter temps arrive, they would need gas patio heaters to warm up customers, and they didn't have any."We found that they were pretty much sold out everywhere, and where they weren't sold out, prices were inflated to the point, that they were unaffordable," said Lee.One local supplier recently told ABC 10News they had a backlog of 200 orders.So Lee turned to social media, making an appeal for patio heaters on the Nextdoor app and community pages on Facebook.One of those appeals was seen by the Rynearson family. They had a backyard heater they hadn't used in awhile. Chance Rynearson, 14, says it was an easy call to lend the heater to Lee for as long as she needs it."COVID has really hit businesses hard. Just to help out is a good thing ... People should be helping each other during these times ... difficult but we should be able to get through it together," said Rynearson.In all, 17 people offered to either donate or lend a heater to Break Point, far more than Lee needed."It's like Christmas. It makes you wanna believe in Santa again ... It was that heartwarming," said Lee.Heartwarming and customer warming. Lee says this gives them a chance at survival this winter."I think it shows we should still have a lot of faith in our neighbors, in our community, and in humanity in general ... and that there's still a lot of good people out there. We are so grateful," said Lee.Lee says she offered many of the donors meals, but many didn't accept, saying that's 'not the reason' they wanted to help out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like pretty much everything else in 2020 Thanksgiving travel looks very different. San Diego International Airport was pretty empty Wednesday afternoon with no crowds or long lines and everyone was wearing masks.While it appeared to be smooth sailing for passengers, airline workers are faced with more of a challenge.“For United Airlines no one has been rehired for the holiday,” said Dante Harris. He’s a flight attendant of 21 years and President of the Association of Flight Attendants Southern California chapter. Harris was one of many hit by massive airline layoffs in October when stimulus money ran dry.“Industry-wide, more than 100,000 employees in the airline industry have been furloughed,” said Harris. “It has been absolutely a disaster.”While he’s not currently flying, some of his colleagues still are. Many of them faced with this problem:“Flight attendants are trying to enforce the mask policy, there are people who get belligerent, people who get non-compliant,” said Harris.Cases across the county are on the rise, yet Harris says some airlines are pushing towards getting back to normal.“Selling alcohol and serving food. We are fighting against that. that is not something we want to go back to right away.”The Auto Club estimates nearly 4 million Southern Californians will travel for Thanksgiving. Three-and-a-half million will travel by car and about 270,000 by plane.If you are heading out for the holiday, keep the following advice in mind.“We’re 35,000 feet in the air and all we have is each other,” said Harris. “We have to have that sense of community to make sure we’re all taken care of.
