LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A judge has denied a request from Britney Spears to end her father’s conservatorship over her estate, though the pop star did score small victories in the case.Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny declined to suspend James “Jamie” Spears from his central role in the court conservatorship, but said she would consider future petitions for his suspension or outright removal, The Associated Press reports.Spears’ attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, said he plans to file those petitions. The judge also approved a request from Spears for a corporate fiduciary, the Bessemer Trust, to now serve as co-conservator with her father.During Tuesday’s contentious court hearing, Ingham said his client fears her father and won’t resume her career as long as he has power over it. The 38-year-old singer has been on a hiatus since early 2019.A lawyer for Spears’ father argued during the hearing that he has been an excellent conservator and has taken his daughter from being in debt to being worth more than million.Spears’ conservatorship has been in place since 2008, when the star experienced mental health issues and her public meltdowns were widely reported on. Since then, however, she has made a comeback in her career and held a residency in Las Vegas.Legal experts told the Los Angeles Times that it’s unusual for someone as young and productive as Spears to be in this type of situation for so long and that conservatorships like these are usually used to protect the old, infirm or mentally disabled. The L.A. Times reports that another hearing in the case is set for Dec. 16. 1616

Live music might feel like a thing of the past, but venues and event organizers are working on ideas to bring it back sooner rather than later in the age of COVID-19.Ticketmaster says it has been working with event organizers and venues to navigate how they plan to admit fans to live sporting events and concerts once a vaccine is released. On Wednesday, Pfizer updated its vaccine efficacy, saying it is 95 percent effective and is seeking clearance soon. Earlier in the week, Moderna announced its vaccine also was 95 percent effective.Ticketmaster says it has discussed the idea of using a person’s vaccine status as a possible barometer of protection for admittance into events. In an email, the company said, “In short, we are not forcing anyone to do anything. Just exploring the ability to enhance our existing digital ticket capabilities to offer solutions for event organizers that could include testing and vaccine information with 3rd party health providers. Just a tool in the box for those that may want to use.”Here is how Ticketmaster says it might work: People who wanted to attend an event would upload their vaccine status through an app that connects to a third-party health care provider. That company would store the information and keep all other details private, abiding by HIPAA laws, according to Ticketmaster. That provider would then mark that person’s status so they could present their digital ticket along with their vaccine status at the event.Ticketmaster says this would not be mandatory, noting “Ticketmaster does not have the power to set policies around safety/entry requirements, which would include vaccines and/or testing protocols. That is up to the discretion of the event organizer. Ticketmaster continues to work with event organizers on all COVID safety measures and it will be up to each event organizer to set future requirements, based on their preferences and local health guidelines.” 1941

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An initiative to split California into three states has received enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot, its author said Wednesday.Venture capitalist Tim Draper said backers of what he has dubbed "CAL 3" would submit petitions with more than 600,000 signatures to election officials next week. The initiative needs signatures from 365,880 registered voters - five percent of the total votes cast for governor in the 2014 election - to qualify for the ballot."This is an unprecedented show of support on behalf of every corner of California to create three state governments that emphasize representation, responsiveness, reliability and regional identity," Draper said.   Splitting California into three states would require congressional approval. One proposed state would be called California or a name to be chosen by its residents after a split. It would consist of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties. A second state, Southern California or a name to be chosen by its residents, would consist of Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera and Mono counties.   The remaining 40 counties would be part of the state of Northern California or a name chosen by its residents.   Draper said he conceived the initiative out of a belief that "the citizens of the whole state would be better served by three smaller state governments while preserving the historical boundaries of the various counties, cities and towns."   Steven Maviglio, a longtime Democratic Party political consultant who was a co-chair of the effort to oppose Draper's 2014 initiative to split California into six states, told City News Service, "Splitting California into three and creating three new governments does nothing to solve our state's challenges other than tripling them." "CAL 3'' has no connection to efforts to have California succeed from the United States. 2050

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California fitness centers have filed a lawsuit alleging Gov. Gavin Newsom's measures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus unfairly target the industry and are demanding they be allowed to reopen.Scott Street, a lawyer for the California Fitness Alliance, said Tuesday that the suit was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court. It accuses state and Los Angeles County officials of requiring gyms to close without providing evidence that they contribute to virus outbreaks and at a time when staying healthy is critical to residents.State and county officials declined to comment on the suit. 632

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- Video showed the horrifying moments a coyote crept up to a family and attacked a small child at California State University Los Angeles.Police say the coyote bit the 5-year-old on the leg just before 6:30 p.m., in the 5100 block of University Drive, according to the CSULA.Campus police responded to the incident and began searching the area for the animal. During their search, officers heard a female student scream and found the coyote approaching the student "in an aggressive manner," police said.Officers found the animal and at least one officer opened fire and wounded the coyote, according to the campus. The animal ran off after it was shot. At this time there are no updates on the condition of the child. Los Angeles Department of Public Safety officers are actively searching for the coyote. Although it's not common, coyotes have been known to occasionally attack humans. 944
