CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Schools across the nation are having trouble filling teacher jobs – so districts are coming up with unique solutions. The Casa Grande Union High School District has looked overseas to help fill their teacher positions – which led us to Melvin Injosa. “If you ask me to dance I’ll suck, if you ask me to sing I’ll suck more, but if you want me to do science, physics, I’ll pour myself out,” said Melvin Injosa, teacher at Vista Grande High School in Casa Grande, Arizona. He teaches physics and chemistry and moved to Arizona from the Philippines a few years ago. He’s in the U.S. through a J-1 Visa teacher program, which allows him to teach and learn in America for up to five years. Injosa is currently in his fourth year. “It’s the best experience so far, for me,” he said, after moving here with his wife who also teaches at the school. “Many of our math and science jobs are filled by teachers from the Philippines,” said Steve Bebee, Superintendent of the Casa Grande Union High School District. Of the over 200 teachers they oversee, 18 are teaching through the J-1 Visa teacher program. Ten others finished their terms last year. “There is not an abundance of teachers applying in our district and coming our way,” Bebee explained. Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, North Carolina, and South Carolina have some of the highest numbers of J-1 Visa teachers, and that number rises year over year. Arizona had 187 in 2018, while North Carolina had the most with 522 participants, according to the U.S. State Department. But the new approach to hiring qualified teachers hasn’t been a hit with everyone. “Do we cut out jobs for people that are already in the U.S.? And we are not, because if we had those positions we wouldn’t have to look,” Bebee said. Just under 21 percent of teacher jobs in Arizona were still vacant a few weeks into the 2018-2019 school year, accounting for about 1,443 positions, according to a survey of 150 schools by the Arizona Personnel Admin Association completed in August 2019. “For teachers in Arizona, you’re lucky to get one applicant,” said Justin Wing, director of human resources for the Washington Elementary School District. “It hit us pretty hard.” Wing created the report that shows how the lack of teachers applying for open positions has impacted class sizes and the need for long-term substitute teachers over the years. Wing explained that Arizona is top five in highest class sizes across the nation. And the average teacher salary in the state is around ,000 lower than the national average, with Arizona sitting at ,973, according to the Learning Policy Institute in 2018. The combo of high class sizes and low pay has made it difficult to attract qualified educators in a lot of states.“I think a big issue is related to working conditions,” Leanne Abushar said. Abushar is an elementary school teacher in Phoenix, Arizona and the president of Phoenix Elementary Classroom Teachers Association.“Pay, working conditions, benefits, all of those things link back to teacher recruitment and retention,” she said. Abushar and the rest of the association are working on getting a contract in place for better pay, and other demands for teachers. She says many people just aren't applying for teacher jobs because they aren't appealing to applicants. “Everybody has been stuck with trying to find remedies,” Bebee said. "Every district is prioritizing their recruiting efforts differently, because if all of us are doing the same thing, we’re hitting still that same pool,” Wing explained. Which brings us back to Melvin Injosa’a chemistry class. Despite low wages, he currently gets paid more in this country than he would in his own. About five times more than his salary back in the Philippines.Melvin understands he has a limited time in the United States, but he makes the most of it. “Even if I only have five years here, I think I learned a lot,” he said. 3964

BOULDER, Co. – Farms across the country have been struggling to stay operating with the pandemic. One in particular was forced to lay off all of its workers, but with some creativity, the owner was able to hire his whole staff back on. He said his company’s recovery started when he threw his business plan out the window and reinvented the farm’s revenue strategy. In that process, owner of 405

BOULDER, Colo. — The COVID-19 outbreak at the University of Colorado Boulder is now the largest in the state, with 1,198 positive cases among students and 104 with probable cases of the virus, according to the latest outbreak data released by state officials Wednesday.Twelve staffers have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data.CU Boulder on Wednesday switched to fully-remote classes for at least the next two weeks, as university officials work to curb the spread of COVID-19 among students, with cases on the rise and isolation spaces dwindling on campus.Philip DiStefano, CU Boulder chancellor, said in a statement Monday that the move was "in the immediate interest" of the campus community's health. Students are being asked to remain in university housing, and employees will work remotely, if possible.University provost Russell Moore said in a news conference Monday that officials have seen fewer COVID-19 cases in recent days, but "unfortunately, the number of cases is not dropping enough."Students can now face a 10-day suspension — or longer — for violating COVID-19 protocols. Interim executive vice chancellor Patrick O'Rourke said 14 students are currently suspended as they go through the discipline process for health violations. The increased enforcement, O'Rourke said, has led to some change in behavior among students off campus, with fewer violations over the weekend.CU Boulder wasn't the only university to appear on the state's updated outbreak list Wednesday, though it was, by far, the largest.Eight outbreaks were reported at the University of Denver, including several sororities, the gymnastics team and a residential building. The case numbers in those outbreaks ranged from 3-9.Two sororities and a fraternity at Colorado State University also reported outbreaks, with the Kappa Sigma fraternity having the most cases at 13 confirmed and four probable. While Colorado has seen a large spike in cases among 18-25-year-olds over the last two weeks, State Epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Herlihy said there was also “concerning” increases among other age groups that are more vulnerable to more-severe bouts with the virus.“Even among other age groups, we’re seeing rapid acceleration of the virus,” Herlihy said. She and Gov. Jared Polis said that the increases in cases – 12 of the last 14 days have seen increasing case numbers in the state – were similar to the spike seen after the July 4 holiday but that they were still investigating the exact cause and if the Labor Day holiday gatherings were attributable. But Polis also said that it was possible that Coloradans had again reduced their caution in wearing masks, staying 6 feet apart and not attending large gatherings. Broadway star Nick Cordero died months after contracting coronavirus, his wife said Sunday."God has another angel in heaven now," Amanda Kloots wrote on Instagram. "My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth."Cordero's right leg was amputated and he was in a coma because of coronavirus."I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere," Kloots wrote. "My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light. He was everyone’s friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. He was an incredible actor and musician. He loved his family and loved being a father and husband. Elvis and I will miss him in everything we do, everyday."Cordero entered the intensive case unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on March 31.He had roles on Broadway in “Bullets Over Broadway,” “Waitress” and “A Bronx Tale.” This article was written by Aliza Chasan for WPIX. 1010

He was a former cop with a little-known story of infiltrating the KKK back in the 1970’s, until an Oscar-winning film thrust him into the national spot light. Now, Ron Stallworth’s story is known to many. “I never imagined anything like this happening when I began this, writing this book,” Stallworth says. “I just want to tell a story.”And Stallworth’s real life meets today's real life. The movie BlacKkKlansman ends with real footage from the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as President Donald Trump’s comments afterwards, saying there were “very find people on both sides.” Stallworth believes the president's words are, in part, why his story still resonates so much today. “He had an opportunity to be the moral conscience of this country in that precise defined moment, and he chose to equate hate with non-violent protesters,” Stallworth says. Stallworth views today's alt-right protesters in the same light as KKK members of decades past. “The alt-right doesn't sport white hoods and white sheets. They wear suit coats. They look like business people,” he says. “They don't have the stereotypical image of the southern racists that many of us grew up grew up on in the movie.” That's why he believes diversity in law enforcement, and connection with the community, is more important now than ever. “If you have a systemic evil in an organization like racism, one of the best ways to fight it is to become part of the organization fight it from within,” Stallworth says. “And that's what I was doing back at back in the day. That's where a lot of people are doing these days.” 1639
