And it seems, the devil is entirely in the details.What will education look like this fall? The answer is complicated.Colleges are slowly coming up with plans, but school districts across the country are talking it out and discovering there's no easy answer.Music Watson, Chief of Staff for the San Diego County, California, Office of Education, said, “We’re looking at things like how do you physical distancing in a classroom? If students need to be 6 feet apart or can they be closer if they’re facing the same direction or if you add some shields or use a space that’s not traditionally a classroom like a library, could you have a class in there?”Most county offices like hers are an intermediary between local school districts and the state. They're now discussing new guidance from public health officials and from the California Department of Education, and they're trying to interpret that for local school districts.“Like symptom screening seems like a pretty easy thing, right, you come to school. you answer questions, get your temperature taken and go in,” Watson said, “except if you have a school with a thousand kids and you need to screen every single one. There’s a lot of logistics involved with that.”For symptom screening, you'll need thermometers, a way to record information, and a way to keep students apart. On buses if you're distancing, then you're reconfiguring how many students can be on that bus at a time.“This is a huge, multi-faceted problem and so we can’t just do it on our own we have to get employee associations, labor groups, parents involved,” Watson said. “We have to work with public health we can’t do it on our own.”The California Department of Public Health is handing out more than 47,000 thermometers, 2 million face shields, 143,000 gallons of hand sanitizer, 123,000 N95 masks, 16 million disposable masks, and 14 million cloth face coverings for staff and students. All of those will be distributed statewide.At the Lakeland School System in Memphis, Tennessee, Superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell said those face coverings, “May be the 2020 equivalent of ‘I forgot my pencil’ and the teacher comes up with a pencil”Which means, schools have to be ready for that. Lakeland Schools are already installing plexiglass shields in reception areas and putting hand sanitizing stations in every classroom. The district is getting Chromebooks ready in case there's a need to do distance learning entirely.Everyone wants a safe environment and there's still a lot of unknowns. When asked about a harsher cold and flu season and whether schools will be shut down again in the fall, Watson said, "It’s entirely possible that if we see a surge, that schools may need to go back to distance learning or may need to take some other tools out of their toolbox, which is why it’s important now to plan for every possibility because it is much easier to start at 100 and ramp down to 70 and then go back to 85 than start at 70 and then go back to 100.”All of these decisions are difficult for everyone, and it seems there's no middle ground. Many districts across the nation are sending out surveys asking for feedback about returning to school or doing a hybrid model. In areas without connectivity, parents may receive a physical handout. And, at the end of the day, educators want kids at school, but they won't do it until they know the nation's children-are safe.“Have a little grace we’re all doing the best we can that things are changing quickly, new guidance continues to come out and some of this will change and we have to be flexible and have a little grace because we’re all in this together and all trying to make it through,” Watson said. 3871

ELIZABETH, Colo. — Police in Elizabeth, Colorado are investigating an unprovoked attack in the midst of an 8th-grade classroom at Elizabeth Middle School.Cell phone video posted on social media shows a male student walk over to another male student and repeatedly punch him. The attack occurred sometime this month.The attack appears to have been planned. In the video, the boy who instigated the altercation is heard asking the person recording the video if he “should do it right now?”Elizabeth police told Scripps station KMGH in Denver the boy has since been arrested for assault and sent to a juvenile assessment center. Police aren’t saying much about what prompted the fight because it’s a juvenile case.The school district isn’t answering questions on whether the student has had disciplinary actions in the past. The school district they sent out a letter to parents the day of the attack and released the following statement. 968

Experts say the finalization of a COVID-19 vaccine is in our near future. Dr. William Moss is a professor of epidemiology and the executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.“Remarkable progress has been made in the development of COVID-19 vaccines,” Dr. William Moss said.He says it typically takes five to 10 years to develop a vaccine, but with so much money and attention going toward COVID-19, he believes it’s likely we’ll have a vaccine by the end of the year.“I’m pretty confident that there will be a vaccine that will have an emergency-use authorization in the United States by the end of 2020,” Dr. Moss said.According to Dr. Moss, of the dozens if not hundreds of vaccine candidates in clinical trials, there are three vaccine candidates that have reached phase three. Phase three is when tens of thousands of volunteers test the vaccine to make sure it’s safe and effective.As of this week, we have optimistic news regarding phase-three efficacy results from biopharmaceutical company Pfizer – which has been collaborating with German company BioNTech.“Early preliminary results suggests that their vaccine is 90% or so effective in preventing mild to moderate or severe disease.”If the 90% efficacy data holds up after follow ups from participants in late November, Dr. Moss says he expects the FDA will rigorously review the data and approve the vaccine for distribution. That means health care workers and other high-priority groups would get the vaccine in December of this year, or early next year.“Pfizer says that they could have close to 50 million doses by the end of this year," Dr. Moss said. "Now remember their vaccine – as a number of the vaccine candidates do – requires two doses per individual. So, 50 million doses allows you to vaccinate about 25 million people.”Dr. Moss says the unprecedented investment in vaccine manufacturing will make it possible for the vaccine to be distributed so quickly. However, there are still quite a few logistical challenges since he says the Pfizer vaccine requires extreme cold temperatures as low as minus 117 degrees Fahrenheit.“So we need warehouses to store the vaccine that have freezers that can maintain that cold, we need transportation systems – planes, trucks – that can deliver the vaccine and keep it cold. And then at the site of distribution, we need to be able to keep these vaccines cold.”Therefore, he says it will likely take a lot longer for the general population to get the vaccine. He’s guessing not until the middle of 2021. Of course, the idea of saving lives with the help of a vaccine is very promising, but he says the greatest misconception is that we can go back to "normal" as soon as it’s distributed.“That by no means is going to indicate that we can go back to our pre-pandemic life," Dr. Moss said. ENSENADA, Mexico (KGTV) — A San Diego dirt bike racer is recovering tonight in Mexico after a bizarre mid-race crash with a mystery SUV.On Saturday morning, about 60 miles southeast of Ensenada, 29-year-old Josear Carrasco was racing a course he knew well. On this day, he would not finish."Just devastated. It's really hard. He's my everything, so it's hard to see him like this," said his wife, Kylie.Kylie was in a truck along the course when she got the news. Josear was in second place, nearly done with his 100-mile stretch and about to turn his bike over to a teammate. That's when he says he collided with an SUV that had driven onto the course, headed toward him. "He tried to veer off to the right ... the car veered off in same direction. Then, a head-on collision. He doesn't remember anything after that," said Kylie.Josear was discovered by spectators and a teammate, with car parts scattered nearby."Something exploded. When they found him, his gear was just melted off," said Kylie.Josear suffered second-degree burns up and down the left side of his body and broken bones in his arms, legs, shoulder and shin. He also suffered a ruptured intestine, but he was alive."Once I saw him breathing, my heart dropped ... because that's all that matters," said Kylie.Josear has already undergone several surgeries at a hospital in Ensenada. His family trying to raise money for a medical transport back to San Diego, while Mexican authorities hunt for the hit-and-run driver. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A girl who disappeared from Moonlight Beach Tuesday afternoon was found safe in San Marcos. According to lifeguards, the 14-year-old girl’s family called to report her missing just before 5 p.m. Just before 6 p.m. the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said the young girl was located in San Marcos. It's unclear at this time what the girl was doing in San Marcos, but the department said family members were traveling to the city to pick her up. 487
