SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Keeping kids active, while also letting them follow their passion, is a top priority for a lot of parents.But often it comes at a cost. A new study from CompareCards.com shows that 46% of parents spend more than ,000 a year on activities for their kids, and 27% spend more than ,000. "As much as we love our kids as parents, and as much as we want them to pursue their dreams, life is expensive in 2019," says Matt Schulz, an Industry Analyst with CompareCards.com. Jessica Mendez is trying to launch an online marketplace where parents can trade used sports equipment to help defray the costs."Every season, kids grow," says Mendez. "Every few months you have to purchase new cleats, a new bat to grow with them."Mendez has four boys that have been involved in all kinds of sports. As they've grown, old equipment has piled up in her garage. Mendez thinks she can have the site up in about a year. She also asked other family members to chip in some money instead of buying toys for birthday or holiday gifts.White says her family spends -6,000 a year on registration, travel and all the other costs associated with extracurricular activities. But it's worth it."I want them to be well rounded and exposed to many opportunities," she says, adding that the activities keep her kids away from doing anything that may get them into trouble.The study also found that nearly 80% of parents believe their child's activities could one day lead to income, whether in the form of a scholarship, job or side-hustle.Schulz says it's also essential to involve your children in discussions about how their activities factor into the budget."It makes sense to be open and honest with your kids about the cost of these things," he says. 3411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Infrastructure improvements will halt Coaster and Amtrak rail service this weekend in San Diego County.During the March 3 - 4 closures, neither Amtrak or Metrolink will be available to commuters in Oceanside, according to North County Transit District (NCTD). Connecting bus service will require an Amtrak reservation, however.There will be no connecting bus service for Coaster commuters, though passengers can use Breeze Route 101 or MTS connecting service, NCTD says.10NEWS TRAFFIC CONDITIONSCoaster and Amtrak service will be canceled on March 10 - 11 as well due to an emergency exercise. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many residents living in and around the polluted Tijuana River Valley expressed frustration this week with a plan to use taxpayer money to fund a campground instead of working on a fix to the raw sewage pouring over the border from Mexico into San Diego County. California Senate Bill 507 was signed by Governor Jerry Brown last month and allotted .5 million towards a campground and only 0,000 to study potential fixes to the sewage.“It seems like it’s the bastard child of San Diego and it just sucks.  It’s not fair,” said Ginger Sacco of the Citizens Against Sewage group.Sacco told 10News they were under the impression the bill, which was backed by Senator Ben Hueso and Assemblyman Todd Gloria, would be used to fight the sewage problem.  Instead, Sacco said they only learned last week most of the money would fund a campground backed by San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox.“I can’t imagine people in their right mind wanting to camp down here knowing all the sewage and toxins that have been coming through here,” said Sacco.A spokesman for Supervisor Cox emailed 10News a statement:“The .1 million comes from a 1988 State park bond act that was specifically designated by the voters for the purchase of land to expand the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park. At this time, after the purchase more than 1,800 acres, there are no additional lands necessary for inclusion to the Regional Park, therefore, we sought State legislation to slightly shift those park funds for the creation of the park and open space amenities.0,000 of that money was allocated to study potential fixes to the sewage spills on the U.S. side….County taxpayer money designated by the voters for a County park is not the proper funding source for an international water pollution prevention and treatment project costing hundreds of millions of dollars.”A spokeswoman for Senator Hueso said she issued news releases that mentioned the campground element.  Sacco said the residents never saw or heard about the campground until recently.An SB 507 promotional YouTube video featuring Assemblyman Gloria focused heavily on the sewage damage but doesn’t mention the campground.  His spokesman sent 10News a statement:“Assemblymember Gloria has been and remains committed to exploring solutions that will stop the pollution in the Tijuana River Valley. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Local and federal authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding a father suspected of abducting his two children and fleeing to Mexico.Authorities said on Jan. 12, 2019, Foong Lian Chin’s ex-wife dropped off their two sons, with the understanding that he would return them to her on the following day.However, when Chin did not return the kids, the ex-wife “called law enforcement to check Chin’s address” but “there was no answer at his house.” Law enforcement also tried to reach Chin by phone but could not get a hold of him.On Jan. 16, 2019, a court gave Chin’s ex-wife full custody of the couple’s children and an arrest warrant was issued for Chin. Authorities said the million warrant is for parental child abduction.According to authorities, investigators learned Chin took his sons -- 8-year-old Huaiyu Chin and 7-year-old Binyu Chin -- to Mexico.Chin, who immigrated to the U.S. from Singapore in the 1980s, has lived in New York, Southern California, and Baja California.Chin and his sons were believed to have last been spotted in Tijuana, Mexico.Chin is Asian, 47 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighs 130 pounds.
