BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- There have been no reports of an epidemic outbreak or public health incident in the northwestern Zhouqu County that was hit by a massive mudslide Sunday, a health official said Wednesday.Zhang Guoxin, vice director of the emergency office of the Health Ministry, made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing.Emergency medical rescue work was coming to an end and now epidemic prevention was the priority for health authorities, Zhang said.At least 702 people were killed and 1,042 others are missing after Sunday's mudslide.A total of 422 injured have been treated as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese senior legislator Chen Zhili on Thursday called for preferential policies in taxation for enterprises using cleaner production methods to promote their competitiveness.Chen, vice chairwoman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the remarks during her report on an inspection on the enforcement of the Cleaner Production Promotion Law.Favorable policies and funding provided in the law had been poorly implemented, and that had impaired the enterprises' initiative in achieving cleaner production, Chen said.Chen said statistics gathered during the inspection did not provide reasons to be optimistic. During the period from 2003 to 2009, only 0.15 percent of the enterprises nationwide had integrated the cleaner production review into their operations.Chen also noted the serious situation of excessive packaging used in protecting products.Statistics revealed that China had been consuming 40 million tonnes of wrapping materials annually, and the bulk of this was used for extravagant packaging, Chen said.Future policies should make detailed provisions on requirements of enterprises eligible for such tax preferences, and those enterprises, which had made outstanding efforts in cleaner production, should be rewarded, Chen said.Chen also urged streamlining the task assignments among different governmental departments in law enforcement and promote the government's supervisory responsibilities.

ROME, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The recovering of poplar forests in Siyang County in Eastern China's Jiangsu Province is benefiting rural life and agricultural activities, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Wednesday.Thanks to a joint program launched more than 30 years ago by the Rome-based agency and Italian plant research labs, new poplar forests have extended from 7 percent to 47 percent and are now covering more than 100,000 hectares of the county's land area.Today the poplar forests play a crucial role in restoring marginal flood plains and stabilizing the river banks. Large swaths of planted poplar trees now protect fields once ravaged by floods, wind, sandstorms and soil erosion, giving boost to agricultural production and benefiting 1 million farmers living in the county.According to the FAO, the Siyang case is an outstanding example of countryside reinforcement triggered by the successful application of the international transfer of germplasm, scientific knowledge and technology."Poplars are very fast-growing and amazingly resilient," said Jim Carle, leader of the Forestry Management Team at FAO. "They can grow in many sorts of ways and can easily integrate with other land uses, making them ideal for supporting animal husbandry, agriculture, aquaculture, viticulture and horticulture," he added.Some of the services provided by these multi-purpose trees include furnishing material for shelter, shade and dwellings, protecting crops and supplying fodder for livestock, as well as offering viable sources of bio-energy.Since the launch of the program the FAO has engaged Siyang farmers and smallholders in new income generating activities. BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- More relief supplies, worth 20 million yuan (2.94 million U.S. dollars), have been sent from China to flood-hit Pakistan, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.The shipments mainly contained urgently-needed daily necessities, including grain, cooking oil, flour, sugar, salt and medicine, the ministry said in a brief notice on its website.The supplies are to be transported through a land route to the Sust dry port near the Pakistan-China border from Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the statement said.However, the ministry did not say when the supplies would arrive, as workers were still rushing to repair the road linking Kashgar and Khunjerab Pass.China is one of the first countries to respond to the relief needs of Pakistan when it was hit by the worst floods in 81 years. China's first delivery of aid, worth 10 million yuan, was delivered on Aug. 4.
