SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego leaders say they are working to help prepare the county's homeless population to protect themselves from the coronavirus.An outreach team has been busy installing hand washing stations across San Diego to address the virus concerns as it affects those experiencing homelessness. Team members have been helping individuals protect themselves against the virus by passing out hygiene kits that include hand sanitizer, info on symptoms, water, soap, tissues, and hand wipes.Nurses have also started to visit San Diego shelters to help prepare those staying there, especially those suffering from underlying medical conditions or who are older. Leaders say nurses are prepared to be on site to assist with screening potential patients and identify potential housing options if they need to be moved for care. Potential options include motels, government buidlings or facilities, or tents, according to leaders.According to the county, medical professionals are on high alert for any possible local outbreak. Currently, one person has been confirmed to have coronavirus. That patient is said to be doing well. Leaders added that there is no evidence of "community-based transmission" in San Diego.Those who are testing in San Diego County must do so through a primary doctor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's unemployment rate ticked down to 14.8%, but a potential new wave of closures could wipe out a large portion of the recent job gains.The San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday that the jobless rate in the region is continuing to drop from a peak of 25% on May 9. Still, roughly 250,000 workers in the county remain unemployed amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Ray Major, the agency's chief economist, said the increased spread of the virus could lead to prolonged economic frustration. "What (the report) shows is that we're ready to go back to work, but that the recovery is probably going to be slow, and we're probably going to be having this conversation with double digit unemployment throughout the summer and probably into the fall," he said. The potential drawbacks would take a financial and mental toll on thousands of workers who returned to their jobs, only to be sent back to file for unemployment. Season and Ian McKesson had to close their two hair salons when the pandemic broke in March and got by on unemployment. "It was hard working 50 to 60 hours a week and being proud that you can maintain everything and then all of a sudden you can't do anything. It was almost like being ripped apart, for me," Season said. The McKessons had to shutter their Mission Hills salon permanently but did reopen their Fallbrook location, called Mary Jane North. That cleared the way for seven stylists, including them, to go back to work. "We get nervous because there's things that are still shutting down around, and so that's a little daunting," Season said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County District Attorney's office published an updated 25-year officer-involved shooting analysis Thursday. The study is said to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind released in the country.10News spoke to District Attorney, Summer Stephan at her office in Downtown San Diego. Her office is responsible for investigating all officer-involved shootings in the county. "We look at those reports with an eye as to whether there is criminal liability," Stephan said. Some notable statistics of the newly released study include:-Between 1993 - 2017, there were 451 officer-involved shootings in San Diego County (55% were fatal)-64% of shootings happened within 5 minutes of an officer arriving at the scene-79% of shootings involved a person who had drugs/alcohol in their system or had mental health issues-92% of subjects were armed with a weapon-There are an average of 18 officer-involved shootings per year-Most shootings occurred after traffic stops and domestic violence incidents-Most shootings happened at an alley/street-Most frequent time of day for a deadly encounter was the midnight hour on FridaysArmed with these new stats, Stephan's office is working with local agencies to reduce these shootings. She said it begins with re-training officers and dispatchers, but also teaching citizens how to call 911."What information is dispatch getting, to tell the officers about the individual's mental health condition, their delusions or history of violence or substance abuse?" Stephan said.The DA's office has already started to pass out 911 cards at community events. The card has a mental evaluation checklist when for when citizens call for help.They are also re-training dispatchers to recognize certain situations and ask the right questions so that they can relay accurate information to field officers. Officers are also getting additional crisis management and de-escalating tools to help them reduce the speed in which they react, or use non-lethal force.The idea: Knowledge is power. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials have warned at least three local churches about having services indoors. The county sent out three letters to Skyline Church in La Mesa; Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lemon Grove; and Awaken Church's campus on Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa.The letters to Skyline and Lighthouse were very similar, saying indoor services create "significant risk of spreading COVID-19," encouraging the churches to move their in-person services outside. The third document is a cease-and-desist letter sent to Awaken Church ordering the church to stop indoor operations. All three letters are dated July 17 and are signed by County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten. The letters state that failure to comply with these orders can mean criminal misdemeanor citations with a fine of ,000 for each violation.
