FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A North County baker who has lost thousands of dollars due to postponed or canceled weddings is trying to help neighbors and keep her business afloat at the same time. Jennifer Duarte said owning a bakery is a dream she’s had since she was a child.“There was a bakery close to my house and the lady worked in the window,” said Jennifer Duarte, owner of Elegance on Display. “I would go and I would just stand there and watch her and said, when I grow up I want to do that.” That’s what she did. She has owned Elegance on Display in Fallbrook for 15 years. With the COVID-19 pandemic—and her specialty being wedding cakes—she’s lost a decent chunk of income.“I had 50 weddings postponed… maybe eight of those are canceling completely,” Duarte said. She has three employees, two of which she had to lay off. She hopes to be able to rehire her employees, but for now, she’s just trying to stay in business. With some items, like eggs, hard to find on store shelves, she’s using her connections to provide a service to her neighbors and also make some up some of her lost income. “We can order bulk through our bakery supplier. Last week, I got flour, sugar, eggs, and butter,” Duarte said. She repackages it in smaller amounts to sell to her neighbors. She said she isn’t making a big profit, but the community has been great lending their support. “So many people realize that there’s not a huge mark up on it. They’ve been tipping or volunteering to help with deliveries,”she added. Duarte is also still making cupcakes, cookies, and small cakes for people who would like to place an order. “I’m just trying to bring a little joy to everybody who’s stuck at home. Cupcakes [and] cookies make everybody feel better,” Duarte said. She makes deliveries throughout Fallbrook, although you have to order ahead. You can also place an order for pick up. If you live outside the Fallbrook area, Duarte can deliver for a small fee. For more information, you can visit eleganceondisplay.com or email: eleganceondisplay@yahoo.com. 2055

Emails from top officials at the National Republican Congressional Committee were hacked during the 2018 midterm elections, Republican sources tell CNN, exposing the GOP's House campaign arm to an intrusion by an "unknown entity."The hack, which was first reported by Politico, was discovered by a vendor in April after emails from four senior committee aides had been surveilled for months, a Republican official with knowledge of the intrusion tells CNN.The revelation of the hack comes weeks after House Republicans lost their majority and saw Democrats pick up close to 40 seats in the House. In a sign of how serious the committee believed the hack to be, they brought on the law firm Covington and Burling to handle the issue, as well as Mercury Public Affairs to deal with the public relations around the intrusion. After the NRCC was alerted to the hack, top officials then informed CrowdStrike, a Republican official said, the cybersecurity firm that helped Democrats expel the Russians from their computer systems in 2016, and later shared information with the FBI as it investigated the election-season hacks.Ian Prior, a spokesman for the committee, said Tuesday that they were hacked "by an unknown entity.""The NRCC can confirm that it was the victim of a cyber intrusion by an unknown entity," said Prior. "The cybersecurity of the Committee's data is paramount, and upon learning of the intrusion, the NRCC immediately launched an internal investigation and notified the FBI, which is now investigating the matter.""To protect the integrity of that investigation, the NRCC will offer no further comment on the incident," he added. The use of hacked material during electoral campaigns has been a focus ever since the 2016 campaign, when emails from the upper echelons of the Clinton campaign were leaked in the closing weeks of the campaign. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was also hacked in 2016. Kremlin-backed hackers published internal documents stolen from DCCC servers as part of the Russian government's wide-ranging effort to interfere in the US election and some of those sensitive internal campaign documents were later used in Republican ads.The heads of the NRCC and the DCCC engaged in prolonged negotiations over not using hacked materials in election ads during the 2018 midterms, but the talks broke down months before Election Day due to an erosion of trust between the parties.Despite not signing any agreement, the head of the NRCC issued a statement saying the committee had no intention of using hacked material."We are not seeking stolen or hacked material, we do not want stolen or hacked material, we have no intention of using stolen or hacked material," then NRCC chairman Steve Stivers of Ohio said at the time. The hack of the NRCC could prove awkward for Republicans, given President Donald Trump has mocked his political opponents when they got hacked by foreign actors, and he has praised Republicans for investing in stronger cyber protections.Shortly after Trump was briefed during the transition by senior US intelligence officials about the hacks at the Democratic National Committee, he gloated in his first comments and said the Republican National Committee was also targeted but "had strong hacking defenses and the hackers were unsuccessful." 3319

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg took out full-page ads in several British and American newspapers Sunday to apologize for a "breach of trust" in the Cambridge Analytica?scandal."You may have heard about a quiz app built by a university researcher that leaked Facebook data of millions of people in 2014," said the ads signed by Zuckerberg, referring to the political consultancy company accused of manipulating Facebook data during the 2016 US election."This was a breach of trust, and I'm sorry we didn't do more at the time. We're now taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen again," read the ads appearing in the UK's The Observer, The Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday, Sunday Mirror, Sunday Express and Sunday Telegraph, along with American newspapers The New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal. The ads, featuring black text on a white background with the Facebook logo, said the social media company was now "limiting the data apps get" when users sign in, and was also "investigating every single app that had access to large amounts of data before" it fixed the problem.According to the ad, Facebook will be reminding users which apps they'd previously given access to, giving them the opportunity to "shut off the ones you don't want anymore.""I promise to do better for you," said Zuckerberg, who has come under harsh criticism for the scandal which sent the company's value plunging by almost billion last week. 1464

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A pride flag is now flying outside Encinitas City Hall, overlooking the city's downtown area. The Encinitas City Council voted 4-0 Wednesday to hoist the flag to commemorate Pride month. The action comes after the Trump administration denied U.S. Embassy requests to hoist the flag, saying government buidlings should only fly the American flag. At the meeting Wednesday, councilmembers said they wanted to show the city as inclusive and welcoming. They added they want to push back against a recent uptick in hate crimes against the LGBTQ commumity - and potential rollbacks of federal protections for them in the military, workplace, and health care."I think it's critically important that we stand up and celebrate," said Joe Mosca, the city council's first openly gay member. "We celebrate the advancements that have been made and we're ready to fight for the future, and make sure that advancements that have been made haven't been rolled back."Lisa Nava, a 30-year Encinitas resident and LGBTQ advocate, watched the Pride flag go up in memory of her brother David, who died of AIDS in the 1980s."It was actually the first time i ever saw true love, between him and his partner, and I believed in my core being that there was no reason two people couldn't love each other and be out in the world loving each other," she said. The city's move comes after California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the Pride flag to fly above the state capitol this week. Tony Krvaric, who heads the Republican Party of San Diego County, said there are bigger issues in the country than which flags to fly."That said it seems common sense that as a general rule government buildings should just fly the American flag and not be used for making political points one way or the other," Krvaric said. Councilmembers also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York, a vital moment in the LGBT rights movement. 1947

Federal judges have ruled that President Trump’s order to exclude people in the country illegally when redrawing congressional districts violates the law. A panel of three federal judges in New York on Thursday granted an injunction stopping the order, saying the harm caused by it would last for a decade. The judges prohibited Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, whose agency oversees the Census Bureau, from excluding people in the country illegally when turning over figures used to calculate how many congressional seats each state gets. The decennial census is used to allocate congressional seats, along with federal funds. 634
