SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - About 30 employees and friends of Hess Brewery will shave their heads Saturday to help raise money for pediatric cancer research. The event is a fundraiser for St. Baldrick's, a foundation that focuses on finding a cure for cancer.Brewery owner Mike Hess says the fundraiser is deeply personal, as his daughter Keely has been fighting Osteosarcoma since last August."Help me get rid of this mop! This is the longest my hair has been since I was a kid," Hess says in a video posted to YouTube. The event will be from 2-6 pm at the Hess Brewery and tasting room in North Park. The public is invited, and people can even decide to shave their own heads if they feel so inspired."It breaks my heart," says Beer-Tender Cassia O'Laughlin. "We need money to research so that kids don't have to go through cancer."Childhood cancer affects 300,000 kids per year, according to St. Baldrick's. Hess says he wants to raise 0,000 to help fund their programs. They have been taking donations at the brewery and online for months, with around ,000 already pledged. Hess and his employees hope that, by shaving their heads, more people at their tasting rooms will ask why and donate when they hear Keely's story. If you're interested in donating, you can do so at this website. 1290

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A water main break in Mira Mesa flooded a music and art studio, filling up rooms full of musical instruments and equipment. The sound of gushing water early Saturday night led to a flood of emotions for musician Anastasya Korol."There is a river rushing in the back ... Shocked and really sad as it started to sink in," said Korol. That night, city officials say water from a break in a 55-year-old, 36-inch steel pipe, flowed into the back of a building in the Via Excelencia Business Park. One of the businesses flooded was the San Diego Music and Art Cooperative, a music and art studio for independent artists. It's used for rehearsal space and classes.Korol says among the seven pianos damaged was the piano she played as a child. "It's upsetting to lose it ... The water goes up through the wood, warps the wood and sound board," said Korol. Also waterlogged: dozens of other instruments, from guitars to violins, along with a long list of sound equipment, artwork and art supplies. Studio founder Mathew Rakers says the total loss is hundreds of thousands of dollars."It's crazy to put years and years of work into something and see it wash away in a matter of hours," said Rakers.Rakers plans to file a claim with the city. Attorney Evan Walker, an expert in flood cases, says such cases could take anywhere from six months to two years to wrap up."You're dealing with a bureaucracy, and when you're dealing with litigation, things tend to get complicated," said Rakers. He says filing with your insurance - if you do have flood insurance - is usually speedier. A delay is something Rakers says his artists can't afford."I'm worried. The biggest loss if the loss of incomes. It will put a lot of people out of work," said Rakers.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the studio with expenses. If you are filing a claim, you have until six months after the flood to file. The City of San Diego says it's processed in about 45 days. The city's Risk Management Department issued this statement: “The time frame to resolve a claim varies and is dependent on its complexity.” 2105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Airbnb is now threatening swift punishment and even legal action against guests and hosts who throw or allow parties. The vacation rental giant says it is banning parties and capping occupancy to 16. The company cited COVID restrictions as part of its rationale."Some have chosen to take bar and club behavior to homes, sometimes rented through our platform," Airbnb said in a statement. "We think such conduct is incredibly irresponsible – we do not want that type of business, and anyone engaged in or allowing that behavior does not belong on our platform."In San Diego, home to at least 11,000 vacation rentals, both residents and hosts praised the move. Andrew Kaperonis owns a home in Mission Beach sandwiched between two vacation rentals. Things got so bad with the unit to the south that he took the owner to court, ultimately making the situation better with a required seven-day minimum stay. It still, however, is a vacation rental. "You get a little bit of anxiety because you just don't know who you are going to get," he said. "You're always kind of looking around and going, 'oh, who's checking in today?'"Kaperonis said Airbnb's party ban is a step in the right direction, but questioned how it would be enforceable. Airbnb says it maintains a 24-hour hotline and rapid response teams. People can also message the site. Hosts also told ABC-10News they backed the move. Blaine Smith, owner of 710 Vacation Rentals, which manages 180 listings largely in Mission Beach, said it's good Airbnb is holding people accountable.Smith says he vets reservations and will decline them if he senses there will be a problem, but not everyone does. "I know a lot of these neighbors, I'm not trying to upset any one of them, whereas if you're a single owner that does not live in the area, I think that's where a lot of the issues come from," he said. Cy Pilkington, who manages four vacation rentals in La Jolla and Pacific Beach, said he was glad Airbnb was taking the stance. He is an on-site manager for three of the units and does not allow parties. "We want people to be able to come and enjoy a piece of our life that they normally can't have, when they live inland or hotter communities or rural communities that want to come and enjoy the beach," he said. The city of San Diego has failed to implement any new regulations on vacation rentals. The City Council passed an ordinance instituting rules in 2018, but rescinded it after a referendum funded by Airbnb. 2496

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A virtual job fair for Camp Pendleton Marines, their spouses, veterans, and members of the reserve and guard is set for Thursday.Organizer RecruitMilitary says more than 35 employers will attend, and more than 400 job seekers have already signed up. The jobs run the gamut from full to part-time, telecommuting, and include local and national employers. The City of Carlsbad and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department will be there recruiting. Other employers include Northrop Grumman, ADT, Spectrum and Eli Lilly. "We have employers that have made the transition themselves," said Jennifer Hadac, a Navy veteran organizing the fair for RecruitMilitary. "A lot of them are veterans themselves or military spouses or members of the military community, so they understand the challenges that they face, they speak the lingo, so it kind of bridges the gap for them."The nationwide Veteran unemployment rate is now at a seasonally adjusted 8 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. It peaked at 11.8 percent in April. But in December 2019, it was as low as 2.8 percent. The virtual job fair is free and begins at 11 a.m. Thursday and runs until 3 p.m. Participants can see a full list of employers and register by clicking here. 1263
