SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A water culvert in Logan Heights overflowed Thursday night due to heavy rain, leaving neighbors with a mess Friday, many homes destroyed from all the water.Ruben Cortez’s home got filled with about a foot of water. Initially the water just piled up outside his sliding glass door, “the water was up to here so it looked like I was inside an aquarium”. After 20 minutes water came through the front and back doors, soon filling the entire house.Cortez and his wife are remodeling their home. One week ago they installed new flooring in their bedroom. After the flooding, the floor is completely ruined.The rest of the house has tile flooring and dirt and mud everywhere.His neighbors are also dealing with similar issues. Many parked their cars on the street and during the flooding the water filled up to the steering wheel.Most people in the neighborhood, along with Cortez himself, don’t have flooding insurance. He tells 10News, “its like getting snow insurance you don’t think anything like that is going to happen and this flood wasn’t really a typical flood, it was part of the drain that came out and flooded. You don’t think of those things”. Cortez wasn’t only worried about his own home, he’s also the pastor at the church next door. While the church was okay, the children’s classroom had water damage. The water also filled between a foot to two feet in the rooms.Left with a laundry list of things to fix, remodel and clean, Cortez tells 10News, “just count your blessings and the bad things as they come in, just face them one at a time." 1581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A University of California San Diego student accused of stealing women’s underwear from campus laundry rooms is facing charges of burglary, grand theft, and receiving stolen property.UC San Diego Police arrested freshman student David Chou, saying he stole ,000 worth of items from the Sixth College laundry room.In some cases, Chou wore the stolen underwear, campus police said.Police are inviting any victims to reclaim their underwear. 467

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police officer is showing his gratitude this holiday season after an incredible display of heroism.It was at the end of his graveyard shift when he heard panic over the scanner."It's moving pretty quick, ooohh standby. It went over the… it went over the cliff. I was not in pursuit. I'm going to save these girls in this man.' At the synagogue, 'I'm going to win. I'm going to go home to my family, and he is going to go to jail. and the community is going to be safe.'" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid the national conversation on systemic racism, there is growing momentum for a campaign to change the name of a local high school and its mascot.Recently, sisters Emma and Charlotte Taila described the time to act as "a now-or-never moment."Emily is a recent graduate of Serra High School. Charlotte is an incoming junior. They started a Change.org petition drive, reviving an effort to change the school's mascot, a conquistador."[The mascot] represents Spanish colonialism and the brutal impact that it had on Native Americans," said Emma.The numbers of signatures climbed quickly, and then, they got some surprise backing from school leadership."She liked the mascot change and wanted to go a step further and go for a rebranding," said Charlotte."She" is Serra High principal Erica Renfree. In an email to the school community, she proposed not just a mascot change, but a name change to Tierrasanta High School.Serra High School is named after Father Junipero Serra, a canonized saint who founded Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769."With the establishment of missions, he participated in a lot of cultural erasure and violence again Native Americans," said Emma.In the past week, protesters have toppled statues of Father Serra in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
