"These will inject fresh momentum into our bilateral cooperation and create a great many job opportunities for our two countries," Hu said.On the situation on the Korean Peninsula, he said both countries agreed to work together with relevant parties to maintain peace and stability on the peninsula, promote denuclearization of the peninsula and achieve lasting peace and security in Northeast Asia.The Chinese leader reaffirmed China's firm commitment to the path of peaceful development and a win-win strategy of opening up."China is a friend and partner of all countries, and China's development is an opportunity for the world," he said.Meanwhile, Hu said he and Obama discussed some disagreements in the economic and trade area, with both sides pledging "to continue to appropriately resolve these according to the principle of mutual respect and consultation on an equal footing."Addressing the same press conference, Obama said cooperation between the two countries is good for the two sides and for the whole world."Along with our G-20 partners, we've moved from the brink of catastrophe to the beginning of global economic recovery," he said.Noting China is one of the top markets for American exports, Obama said the annual U.S. exports to China in goods and services support "more than half a million American jobs."He praised China's extraordinary economic growth that "has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. "This is a tribute to the Chinese people," he added.The U.S. leader also expressed his satisfaction with the reaching of dozens of deals between the two sides that will increase U.S. exports "by more than 45 billion U.S. dollars."Hu, who unfurled his first state visit to the United States Tuesday since Obama took office in 2009, just concluded his eighth meeting with Obama before the press conference.Before the talks, a grand welcome ceremony for President Hu was held at the White House.Hu said at the ceremony that his visit is aimed at increasing mutual trust, enhancing friendship, deepening cooperation and pushing forward the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship for the 21st century.

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Saturday discussed the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula in phone calls with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and Japanese foreign minister Seiji Maehara.The discussions follow an artillery exchange between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in waters off the west coast of the divided peninsula on Tuesday.During the conversations, Yang said safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula served the common interests of concerned parties.Those parties should call on the DPRK and South Korea to exercise calmness and restraint and hold dialogue and make contacts, and not to take actions that would escalate the conflict, he said.He said all parties should work together to help cool the situation as soon as possible and effectively ensure no repeat of such conflict.Meanwhile, the Chinese minister expressed the hope that concerned parties would take a reasonable and pragmatic approach to actively create favorable conditions for resuming the six-party talks.The parties should also commit themselves to establish related mechanisms at an early date to eliminate various factors threatening peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole region.Lavrov said Russia agreed with China on the latest situation and was ready to keep close contact with China to help defuse the tensions on the peninsula and create conditions for a restart of the six-party talks.Maehara said that Japan is willing to work together with China to jointly safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and push forward the denuclearization process of the Peninsula.During Tuesday's incident, shells landed on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island near the contentious sea border called Northern Limit Line (NLL). CHONGQING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Environmental sanitation workers from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from the Yangtze River near the Three Gorges Dam, ensuring the dam's safe and effective operation after its water level was raised.More than 68,000 workers in nearly 21,000 boats retrieved the garbage.In late October, the water level in the dam was lifted to its designed maximum of 175 meters, allowing the dam to play its full flood control, power generation, navigation and water supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, a Chongqing municipal work administrator.Raising the dam's water level increased the surface area of water in the dam. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing.The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability.The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest water-control and hydropower project.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- More people enduring poor living conditions have been covered by China's social security system, according to the country's Ministry of Civil Affairs.Various figures disclosed during a national working conference held Monday by the Ministry in Beijing showed that as of November, about 75 million people had been provided with minimum living allowances, an increase of 5.4 percent from the same period of last year.In terms of medical services, 8.58 billion yuan (about 1.3 billion U.S. dollar) were spent in to aid nearly 60 million people in need in the first nine months of the year, up 28 percent than the same period last year.In addition, over one million vagrants and beggars with no means of support in cities had been receiving help as of December 2010.Also, the Ministry has set up aid centers for homeless juveniles in 40 counties and cities with 30 million yuan of the proceeds from the welfare lottery.
