SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego high school math teacher has figured out that investing in a souped-up fire truck has endless returns in smiles.The engine rumbles and the siren sounds before a loudspeaker announces, "Happy Birthday to Pauley! We want to wish a Happy Birthday to Pauley!"She's a 1947 International made into a hot rod fire truck named Lil' Red. Tricked out like the toy models kids love, the big kid at the center of this story is Mira Mesa High School math teacher David Watson."And up popped this fire truck," said Watson. "It's just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. It's a hot rod fire truck and I thought, oh my gosh, I need to have this."Watson says he's long had a thing for classic cars and when he spotted Lil' Red for sale in an online post he plunked down a pretty "confidential" penny to make her his own. This from a man who gives lessons on the value of a buck."I also teach a class called financial math," said Watson. "I wrote curriculum for that. I changed the name to Math for Life because that makes more sense."Watson says it's things like how to open a checking account and maintain a budget. So, what did his students think of hot rod expense?"They thought I was crazy!" exclaimed David. "They thought I was stupid; don't spend your money on that. Why would you do that? At first, explained Watson for the pure joy of having a really awesome set of wheels, but then he got to know Lil' Red a little better."The siren works, it has multi sirens. It has a little warning horn, it has a big huge horn, big loud horn. I didn't even know it had it. I was like, I wish it had the loud horn but then I finally figured out, it's in the middle of the steering wheel."Then it hit him right in the middle of his heart, he had a celebration machine."Baby showers, engagements, birthdays, and half my birthdays are for people who are 60 and older," said Watson. "The oldest person I did a birthday for was a hundred."So far, he's added an unforgettable flair to more than 70 events — and he doesn't charge a dime."Some people will call me crazy," said Watson. "But it's a lot of fun. My brother usually goes with me and he brings his dog. and his dog is a wonderful, very friendly dog. And the kids love his dog."I say to him, "You must get a great kick out of this.""I never realized," Watson says. "I thought I would just love owning it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego company says they have the solution to make people recycle more and get back the money they spend on redemption fees. One Earth Recycling wants to put the redemption centers in high-traffic areas like malls and grocery stores, rather than their usual spots in industrial areas of the city."Our goal is not to try to exceed people's expectations of recycling, we're trying to develop a whole new category of recycling," says One Earth CEO Josh Turchin.RELATED: California considers overhaul of bottle and can recycling programEvery year, Californians leave hundreds of millions of dollars on the table because of unredeemed cans and bottles. Turchin says the biggest problem is that it's not easy to find redemption centers, and they're not always the most welcoming of places."This program has been hijacked by opportunistic operators who have just strip-mined the model and operate it as inexpensively as possible," he says.To counter that, Turchin plans to open 100 small-scale redemption centers at malls and grocery stores across California. Putting them where people already shop will make it easier for them to bring back redemption bottles and cans."We focus on marketing to the soccer mom set, kids and across demographics to make recycling something everybody has access to," says Turchin.RELATED: Residents voice concern over North San Diego County recycling center projectThe first One Earth Recycling center is already set up at the Westfield Mission Valley parking lot. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Congressman is responding to a Team 10 investigation that uncovered claims the government is not providing sufficient medical care to people in its custody.Court documents uncovered by Team 10 claim a man was arrested at the border then held for nearly three days in a potentially dangerous medical state.According to court documents, "Mr. Centeno was kept in a small cell where the lights were on the entire time. Mr. Centeno was not given a change of clothes during the nearly three days while he was at the Port of Entry. The cell where Mr. Centeno was held did not have a bed, and Mr. Centeno was given a thin foil blanket and a torn yoga mat to lie on. There was no soap, no toothbrush, and no hygiene products."RELATED: Members of Congress respond to Team 10 Border Detox InvestigationIn a statement to 10News Congressman Scott Peters wrote, "CBP's continued violation of DHS policy is unacceptable. Part of the supplemental funding I voted to support this summer included crucial funding for medical care for migrants. In the coming weeks, my staff will meet with the head of CBP's San Diego Field Office to demand a stop to this behavior. No person should have to endure this level of pain and suffering at the hands of federal law enforcement officials, so we will continue to press the Department until appropriate changes are made."The ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties is also calling for changes to the way CBP provides medical care.A letter from the organization to the Executive Assistant Commissioner CBP Office of Field Operations stated, "Over the past few months, multiple reported instances indicate that U.S. Customs and Border Protection ("CBP") is knowingly denying access to medical care to persons in CBP custody at the San Ysidro port of entry while these individuals detoxify from a variety of controlled substances, including prescribed medications. CBP's failure to provide detained individuals with medical supervision during this process puts these individuals at risk of serious injury or death."RELATED: Claim: Government is not providing adequate medical care to people in its custodyThe letter pointed out that when CBP deprives detainees of emergency and other necessary medical care, the agency violates its policies.The ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties requested CBP revise and strengthen its policies surrounding: reasonable accommodations, medical staff, and facilities at the Port of Entry, intake and medical screening procedures, length of detention, and written policies."It's not rocket science, there should be trained medical staff to ensure that people who are undergoing any kind of medical emergency, including detoxification but not limited to detoxification, have access to a trained medical official as opposed to a law enforcement officer," said staff attorney Mitra Ebadolahi.The letter stated, "These individuals' experiences are not outliers, but part of a long list of recent cases that show that many similarly situated individuals detained at the San Ysidro POE face similar risks. According to police, the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. at the Mills Building on Imperial Avenue downtown. The building houses San Diego County government offices. Police say the man threatened an employee on the 5th floor of the building before damaging computer monitors in the office. The suspect was arrested for vandalism and battery. At this time, it’s unclear how the suspect got into the building. 743
