SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - After a heart attack nearly killed him at age 46, Adam Bavario is now thanking his doctors, and his dog.For 27 years Bavario was a medic and police officer in Los Angeles. He says while he loved the job it caused a lot of added stress on him physically and mentally. During his 30's Bavario started having health issues and chest pains, but every time doctors ran tests they couldn't find anything wrong.The misdiagnosis almost killed him five months ago. "I knew I was having a heart attack. I went to grab my phone and passed out on the floor," said Bavario.He was suffering one of the deadliest heart attacks, known as the widow maker. "One of his major arteries was 100 percent blocked, and if that doesn’t get opened in time or quickly, there's a potential for something catastrophic," said Dr. Karim El-Sherief, an Interventional Cardiologist at Tri-City Medical Center.While unconscious, Bavario's sleeping dog Roxy awoke and sensed he was in trouble, licking and nudging him until he woke up. “The ironic thing about Roxy is Roxy is completely deaf from birth, she had enough awareness to come in and get me up," said Bavario.He was able to call 911 and then first responders from the San Marcos Fire Department got Bavario to Tri-City Medical Center in minutes. Dr. El-Sherief and his team were able to treat Bavario in record time for the hospital, 27 minutes. Now Bavario is using his free time to advocate for cardiac awareness. "What I can tell you is get checked out, do your routines," Bavario says.Dr. El-Sherief says with proper screenings along with diet and exercise, these heart attacks can be prevented. Scientists believe they have discovered a new species of whale in Mexico.The team was taking underwater video and audio samples of three beaked whales near Baja California. They work with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society near the San Benito Islands, about 300 miles from the U.S. border.They originally were looking for what animal was making an unidentified sound recorded in 2018 in the area.Experts in the field of beaked whales now say the scientists’ observations don’t match anything seen before, and they are “highly confident” the video shows an entirely new species, according to a press release.“We saw something new. Something that was not expected in this area, something that doesn’t match, either visually or acoustically, anything that is known to exist,” said Dr. Jay Barlow in a statement from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. “It just sends chills up and down my spine when I think that we might have accomplished what most people would say was truly impossible – finding a large mammal that exists on this earth that is totally unknown to science.”Scientists are now using genetic sampling to confirm what the scientists found is really a new kind of beaked whale.The discovery of a new species of beaked whale proves how much mystery there is left to discover in the oceans that our captains, crews, and research partners fight to defend,” said Peter Hammarstedt, Director of Campaigns for Sea Shepherd. 1442

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Federal and state agencies spent most of Sunday morning at Truth Aquatics headquarters in Santa Barbara, the company that operated the Conception. Investigators served a search warrant at around 9 a.m. looking for safety, maintenance, and training records for the boat. Agents also took pictures of the company's two other dive boats. The search warrants are considered "pretty standard" as part of the investigation to find out the cause of the fire and if any crimes were committed. The search comes just days after the owner of Truth Aquatics preemptively filed a lawsuit that could limit the payouts to the victim's families.Thirty-four people were killed in the early morning boat fire on Labor Day. One of the victims was identified by family as Nicole Quitasol. Quitasol lived in San Diego. She worked at Nicky Rottens in Coronado. The Santa Barbara Sheriff says the passengers were trapped by the flames. The Conception's captain and four crew members were the only ones to escape.Coast Guard records show the Conception passed it's most recent inspections with zero safety violations. Authorities are looking into how batteries and electronics were stored and charged and what crew members were doing at the time of the fire. All but one of the victim's bodies have been recovered. The search was called off last week due to weather but is expected to resume on Tuesday. The conception is still underwater. 1456
