ROCHESTER HILLS, Michigan — A Michigan man is accused of trying to kill a teen after the boy allegedly knocked on his door for directions.Jeff Zeigler, 53, a former Detroit firefighter, is charged with assault with intent to murder over the incident.Lee Kolozsvary, a long-time friend of Zeigler's says he's blown away by the allegations and thinks he was just trying to scare away the teen at the door.During a hearing on Friday, Zeigler said the public isn't hearing the whole store.Brennan Walker, 14, got lost on his way to school without a phone after missing the bus."I guess I put my hand up, I don't really remember, and I started to run," Walker said. "I looked back behind me and I saw him aiming at me and I turned back. I turned back and I heard the gunshot."Walker's family said the thought he was trying to break in. It was all caught on security video.Kolozsvary says he doesn't think Zeigler had any intent to kill."The Jeff Zeigler I know, he's a good guy," Kolozsvary said. "I know what kind of family man he is and I don't think he had any malice whatsoever toward that young man except for the protection of his home." 1156

Roseanne Barr's firing from her namesake show is definitely not the first instance of a celebrity being removed for offensive comments or acts.Other high profile cases include Kathy Griffin, Phil Robertson, Paula Deen, Charlie Sheen, Gilbert Gottfried and Isaiah Washington. One key difference is that the programs continued in some capacity, besides Deen's.  372

RIO LINDA, Calif. – A man dressed as Santa had to be rescued in California after his powered paraglider got tangled in power lines.Sacramento firefighters responded to the unusual incident in Rio Linda after receiving multiple reports around 1 p.m. Sunday.Eventually, crews were able to free jolly old Saint Nicholas and his “hyper light” from the lines. Luckily, he wasn’t injured, according to Metro Fire Sacramento.“We are happy to report Santa is uninjured and will be ready for Christmas next week, but perhaps with a new sleigh!” wrote the fire department on Twitter. We are happy to report #Santa is uninjured and will be ready for #Christmas next week, but perhaps with a new sleigh! pic.twitter.com/muYQex4zYU— Metro Fire of Sacramento (@metrofirepio) December 20, 2020 California Highway Patrol – North Sacramento posted photos of the entangled Santa on Facebook, saying their don’t typically respond to “Rudolph lane-changed me” calls, but after multiple reports, it was best to check things out.“Turns out Santa was trying to get some last-minute fun in before the holiday and got into a hot wire situation,” wrote CHP. 1138

RIPON, Wisconsin — An assistant professor at a Wisconsin college is getting national attention for the research she just published about a dog's empathy for its owner. The idea came to Ripon College's Julia Meyers-Manor when her collie tried to save her mom from a pile of pillows when she was just playing with her children. In her study, Meyers-Manor observed whether dogs would open a door if their "trapped" owner was on the other side crying or humming, and if so, how much of an effort they would make to "rescue" the person. She also recorded the dogs' heart rate variability.Meyers-Manor said dogs can "feel" your emotions. One dog named Molly rammed through the door and leaped into her owner's arms."If we're distressed they become distressed," Meyers-Manor said. The animals, however, had a hard time deciphering whether the human was being truthful."In the crying condition the dogs basically ran in, and if they did, they did it within 20 seconds," said the assistant professor.About 50 percent of the dogs rammed through the door. Meyers-Manor said the other half did not because they were too stressed over what they saw and heard."Dogs were pacing, whining, showing all types of stress behaviors by their owner's distress," said Meyers-Manor. "So they start to shut down and freeze from opening the door."To many people's surprise, she found service K-9's in the study performed no different than any other pooch.None of the more than 30 animals were hurt in this study. You can read the assistant professor's published research by clicking here. 1596

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- One of the California Highway Patrol officers wounded during a shootout in Riverside Monday evening died and two others remain hospitalized Tuesday, according to the CHP.According to Riverside authorities, the shooting happened around 5:35 p.m. on the 215 Freeway near Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue. CHP officer Andre Moye stopped the suspect driving a GMC pickup truck and then decided to impound the vehicle, officials said.RELATED: Cellphone video captures deadly officer-involved shooting in RiversideAs he was calling for a tow truck and filling out paperwork, the suspect entered the truck, grabbed a rifle and fired it at the officer, police say. Officer Moye was able to broadcast an "officer needs assistance" call.Of the first three officers on scene, two of them were immediately engaged, both of them were struck during a gun fire exchange, authorities said. One of them received major injuries to his leg and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. By Tuesday afternoon, “he was conscious and talking, in good spirits," said CHP Inland Chief Bill Dance. The other CHP officer received minor injuries to his leg.The suspect was killed in a shootout with a fourth CHP officer.Officer Moye was transported to Riverside County Medical Center in Moreno Valley and was pronounced dead, authorities said.“This incident shows just how dangerous the job of the California Highway Patrol and law enforcement is in general," said Dance.A "large contingent of security" was established at the hospital out of an "abundance of caution," said Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.Tuesday, investigators continued the lengthy task of looking for evidence on the side of the 215 freeway."It was a long and horrific gun battle," said Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz. "And it resulted in a very extensive crime scene."In addition to the three CHP officers who were shot, police said a witness may have also been hit with something, but it doesn't appear to be gunfire. Video from the scene shows bullet holes in the front windshields of two CHP cars. During a news conference Tuesday, Diaz identified the gun used by the suspect only as a rifle, saying it had not yet been processed.KABC is reporting that family members of the suspected gunman identified him as Aaron Luther, a father of two from Beaumont in his late 40s.Watch the news conference in the player below: 2424
