LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Mudslides, flooded freeways and dangerous driving conditions plagued the Southland Thursday thanks to a second straight day of rain, prompting road closures, mandatory evacuation orders in Orange County and fears that the situation could get much worse before the storm moves out. As of midday, no evacuation orders had been issued in the Malibu area, the scene of the recent Woolsey Fire that now has residents on the lookout for mud and debris flows. A mudslide during the morning commute inundated a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Leo Carrillo State Beach, forcing a full closure of the heavily traveled roadway clear north to Ventura County. Crews had the bulk of the mud cleared by midday, and the road was reopened. In Orange County, voluntary evacuation orders were issued Thursday morning for select neighborhoods near the Holy Fire, affecting the Trabuco Creek, Rose Canyon and Mystic Oaks/El Cariso areas. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol Friday promised focused enforcement efforts during the New Year's holiday weekend.The CHP's Maximum Enforcement Period will start at 6:01 p.m. Friday and go through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, when all available officers will be on duty, officials said.``Impairment of any kind while driving is illegal. Alcohol, cannabis or legal or illegal drugs can all affect your driving,'' CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. ``Impaired driving is a serious crime that can lead to an arrest, serious injury or death.''RELATED: California's repeat DUI offenders to use ignition interlocks in 2019The CHP promised to focus on impaired drivers but also watch for distracted driving, speeding and seat belt violations. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Orange County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a Black man Wednesday after he allegedly tried to grab one of their guns during a struggle. According to an Orange County Sheriff's Department press release, two deputies from the Homeless Outreach Team made contact with the man outside the Hotel Miramar in San Clemente. "During the contact, a physical altercation occurred. Surveillance video at the scene showed that during the physical altercation, the subject attempted to gain control of a deputy’s gun," the department said in the news release. "Shortly after, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Deputies began lifesaving measures, and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene."The latest killing of a Black person by law enforcement happened on the same day as the decision not to charge Kentucky police officers for Breonna Taylor's death was announced. Part of the incident Wednesday afternoon in San Clemente, California, was captured on video and posted to social media by the Southern Orange County Black Lives Matter group. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Three men and three women were arrested for allegedly toppling and vandalizing a statue of President George Washington in Grand Park, authorities said Saturday.The vandalism occurred about 6:40 p.m. Thursday in the downtown park at 200 N. Grand Ave. in the Civic Center, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Officers monitoring a nearby protest saw people pulling on red bands tied to the statue's neck, police said.The statue broke off of its base and fell to the ground, where it was spray-painted as the six suspects and others cheered and celebrated, police said.The suspects then hid nearby to change their clothes and conceal items in their backpacks to avoid arrest, police said. But police were waiting when they left the protest at Spring and Temple streets and the six suspects were arrested.Officers recovered items during the arrest including a gas mask, laser pointer, helmet, goggles, arm protectors and change of clothing, police said.The suspects were identified as Elizabeth Brookey, 19, of Burbank; Christopher Woodard, 33, of Los Angeles; Anna Asher, 28, of North Hollywood; Emma Juncosa, 23, of Los Angeles; Andrew Johnson, 22, of Glendale and Barham Lashley, 30, of North Hollywood.The case will be presented to the District Attorney's office for consideration of felony filings, police said. 1351
