Lawmakers around the country are considering passing legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom.Those for and against have voiced their opinions. But now, three teachers in Michigan are putting the concept to the test.Three teachers — one who’s never shot a gun before and two concealed pistol license (CPL) holders — agreed to be put through an active shooter drill.“I’m a little nervous,” said Bob Fite. “I usually shoot at paper plates and at the gun range.”Fite has been a high school social studies teacher for 35 years. He is also a CPL holder.This active shooter training drill is what police use. Think of it as a big screen video game, except this scenario is all too real.Fite had his finger on the trigger the whole time, which is dangerous. But he still hesitated to shoot and when he did, he missed the mark.“There are lockers in the background. If that’s kids in the background, we got a problem,” he said.“It’s a very touchy subject, and I don’t know where I stand. I really don’t,” said Chad Keisel is a high school biology teacher of 24 years.He’s never shot a gun before. In the first training scenario, Chad was shot without even hitting the gunman.“I thought it was only one guy, how easy is that? But if there’s kids running around in the background, I would not shoot,” he said.Katherine Montie has only been a high school math teacher for a few months. She’s a CPL holder and during the practice round, it was clear she was a great shot.In the first scenario, she kept calm and killed the suspect.But in the second scenario, she didn’t realize there was more than one suspect that shot back at her. She was “killed” before she could hit one of the shooter.“If I knew those students, that would have been a completely different situation, for sure,” she said.Allen Park Police Sgt. Wayne Albright facilitated thie drill. He teaches students and school staff on the ALICE method, which doesn’t involve guns.ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. Students and staff are trained to use a lockdown method while hiding under desks or furniture during a shooting or being proactive and doing whatever it takes to keep the shooter out of the room, or if unable to do so, using counter measure and evacuating.For more information on Alice, click hereSgt. Albright says teachers may not be able to handle emotional stress that comes with this type of training.“You learn to distance yourself and separate your feelings from the actual scene. I don’t think teachers have been trained to do that,” he explained. “They don’t have to. They have a connection with those kids because that’s what they’re supposed to do.”After the drill, the teachers expressed concern.“I was shaking. I can feel it in my knees. I can feel it in my elbows,” Keisel explained. “It kind of froze me for a second and that was somebody I didn’t even know. And it wasn’t even real.”If armed, the teachers say they’re not comfortable leaving their students in a classroom, while risking their own lives to hunt down a shooter.“I would like to say I would be the hero, but I don’t know if I would be,” Keisel added.“I would be locked down in my room making sure that nobody came through that door,” Fite said.Being smaller in stature, Montie says if she were armed in the classroom, her mind would constantly be on her gun.“What if one of my students tries to take that gun from me? Then you aren’t even thinking about an active shooter, you’re just thinking about every other day of the year,” she said.One thing all three teachers agree, the training has to be extensive. ut they question where the funding would come from.“I think it’s not as easy as hand teachers a gun, they are already there anyway they can just neutralize any threats because they all have guns and training,” Keisel said. “Come and try this and then answer the question, if it’s a wise thing?" Fite said.A bill has been introduced into the Michigan state House that would allow teachers to carry a gun at school. The teachers we spoke with say even if the bill passes, they hope lawmakers will focus on additional security measures, not just arming teachers. 4269

LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Kids are heading back to school, and in order to make sure they're successful in the classroom, doctors say their success is dependent on the amount of sleep they're getting.According to Dr. Jose Colon, a sleep specialist with Lee Health in Florida, it's important to make sure kids not only get the proper amount of sleep every night, but making sure they get into a routine a few days before they're back at school."If we're sleeping in for a longer period of time, which we commonly do sometimes during the summer, we're delaying the exposure to the sunlight and that alters your own natural melatonin, making it so that you have this predisposition towards staying up later," Colon says.He also says set a specific wake up time for kids no later than a few days before they start school. In order to help them get to bed earlier, help them get relaxed by avoiding electronics with LED light."You don't have to walk around the dark with your eyes closed, but doing what you can to minimize artificial lights is going to help your melatonin naturally come out," he says.If kids can't avoid technology, Colon says there's a setting to lower the LED light on most devices. Also, taking a warm bath at night can help kids get to sleep, according to Colon. He says the body will become naturally warmer, but the temperature will drop after leaving the tub. That drop in temperature will help cool the body, which ultimately helps with sleep.He also says adding a few drops of lavender in the bath can help."Lavender oil has been shown to decrease cortisol, which is our stress hormone, and it's helpful for sleep," he says.Still not sleeping? Colon says there are a few at home remedies to try."Melatonin has been studied in children with ADHD, Autism, neurodevelopment disabilities and even with people with migraines and it's been shown to be safe and effective," he says.Colon says to purchase the melatonin with a "GNC" label. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — The La Mesa community has continued to show its strength and resilience. But as we head into the weekend, the city's 7 p.m. curfew continues and some fear there could be more violent riots.Colorful murals now cover La Mesa businesses, destroyed by rioters and looters last weekend. For Kenny Siler, Friday is a big win. "It means the world to be able to come in here," Siler said.He drove his legally blind friends to the Vons grocery store on the first day it reopened. "If there's a good sale, [I get] a whole bunch of Gatorade, and if there's a good chunk of meat I can smoke," he laughed. He's one of the hundreds of La Mesans supporting local businesses as soon as they can. Some shop, some clean, some donate.Next to Vons, California Coast Credit Union still has not reopened. "Both ATM's and inside, everything has been just butchered," the credit union's Sr. VP of Communications, Rene McKee said.They were victims of the riots, but they are also stepping up to help. Friday, the credit union donated ,000 to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund. The online Gofundme account continues to grow every hour, far past the original goal of ,000."It's helping to bolster the spirits of the residents here in La Mesa and these small businesses," McKee said. While glimmers of hope begin to flicker, La Mesans still face the reality that what happened last weekend, could happen again. One hundred national guard troops continue to provide added security and prevent property damage, with 100 more on standby in case the situation worsens. For Siler, who is a proud military veteran, he hopes this weekend will bring peace and order. "I support my constitution," Siler said. "Protest. But don't do what you've done," he pointed at the boarded-up walls.The money donated to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund will be collected on June 25, 2020. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- While many drivers say a new Caltrans project in the East County is making SR-67 safer, some say it's literally making them sick to their stomach.Long considered one of the most dangerous roads in San Diego County, Caltrans is currently working on a million project to improve safety between Lakeside and Ramona.  A key part of the project is the installation of flexible posts called "channelizers" in the median.  Channelizers are bright yellow so they can be easily seen, helping prevent cars from drifting across the center into oncoming traffic."I think it'll save lives. I really do," Andy Jones tells 10News. Jones regularly drives the 67 for work.However, since the channelizers began being installed over the last few weeks, there have been a handful of reports of drivers becoming queasy.  One man told 10News the way the light reflects off the channelizers at night makes him feel nauseated.  The Ramona Sentinel reports that two people have called the Ramona Planning Board with similar complaints.Driver Donna Gines says the channelizers make her feel safer on her regular drives from Rancho Bernardo to Barona, but she can understand whey they could make some people feel ill."Some people don't react well to reflectors," she said. "It's kind of like a strobe light, maybe? And maybe it does make them dizzy."Caltrans tells 10News they have not received any direct complaints. However, after 10News raised the concern, Caltrans decided to do a review of how the channelizers are functioning.  They plan to send crews at different times of day to see if any changes need to be made. 1663
