PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — As the coronavirus continues to grip parts of South Florida, there are growing concerns over hospitalizations and the numbers of intensive care unit beds available.Last week the Sunshine State hit another grim milestone with more than 1,800 hospitalizations — the highest in a single day since the start of the pandemic, according to state records.Many hospitals are taking action against the record-setting numbers.Some hospitals in the state, including Bethesda East, Bethesda West and Boca Raton Regional Center in South Florida, are now rescheduling elective procedures that require overnight stays to help free up space.In Florida, 56 hospital ICUs have hit capacity and another 35 hospitals show ICU bed availability of 10% or less.As of Wednesday morning, many Palm Beach County hospital ICUs were reportedly near capacity.Florida Gov. Ron Desantis said hospitals are seeing more patients who are coming in for other reasons and then learning they have COVID-19. He added that is part of the reason the positive numbers are rising."People didn't all of the sudden stop having heart attacks," DeSantis said. (KGTV) -- The devastating Camp Fire claimed 88 lives and destroyed thousands of homes. “We start with a punch list every day and there's usually like 10-15 items on it and we usually get about 5 or 6 done,” said Battalion Chief Curtis Lawrie.Including filling out insurance papers, getting quotes from contractors. A drastically different new normal. “The place where you usually set your wallet, your keys, you don't have any of that routine.”The changes aren’t just affecting adults in town, children are feeling the impact as well. While Lawrie says donations are still pouring in, his concern is years down the road. “They were in very toxic smoke for 24-36 hours without a break and you know that's going to have really bad effects on their physical being.”Looking back the firefight was emotional for everyone involved. “Two and a half hours into it, we realized it wasn't a fire fight anymore.”The focus then shifted to saving lives. “There was a period of about four hours where I didn't know if my family made it out.”Lawrie continued, saying he had to do his job and have faith others were helping as he was. “I'm really thankful that so many people helped each other, and I'd like to say the best part of humanity showed up that day.”Humanity that continues to give during the holiday season. 1724

Pharmacists will be instrumental in getting the first round of COVID-19 vaccines out, especially for the most vulnerable.Walgreens and CVS have a deal with the U.S. Department of Health to go into more than 50,000 long-term care facilities. Both companies are still recruiting pharmacists, nurses and pharmacy technicians.“I am absolutely supportive of getting a vaccine and I will be the first in line when I am eligible to get one. I believe in vaccines. I believe in the science of vaccines,” said Tasha Polster, who deals with pharmacy quality, compliance and patient safety at Walgreens.Once the vaccine is more widely available, people will be able to sign up online to get the vaccine at a pharmacy location.Walgreens plans to work with communities to set up COVID-19 vaccine sites in other locations, like they do with the flu shot.“We work with churches and local community centers in underserved populations to bring the vaccine to those patients that would you know need them,” said Polster.Speaking of the flu, the pandemic has brought some encouraging news on that front.Walgreens created special map models to show what the flu season has done so far this year compared to last year. Police in Connecticut says they've arrested a Jerry Thompson for allegedly decapitating his landlord.Hartford Police Department officials say they were called to a residence Sunday afternoon to check on the well being of Victor King, who neighbors had not seen in over a day.When officers arrived at the house, they found King's body on the kitchen floor, partially covered up with a sheet."It was soon discovered that the victim had sustained severe trauma to several parts of his body by means of a bladed instrument," officials said in a press release to E.W. Scripps.King called police Saturday morning, stating that he and his roommate Thompson were reportedly disputing over rent, CNN reported. But police officials tell E.W. Scripps that "the accused has been non-verbal for the past three months, as claimed by the landlord. There is no record of an 'argument.'""A suspected murder weapon, a samurai sword, was recovered 10 miles away in the Farmington River by members of the HPD Dive Team after the suspect was arrested," officials told E.W. Scripps.On Sunday evening, police said, Thompson was apprehended without incident. He was charged with murder, and his bond was set to million. 1206
